It’s a must at the Midsummer Feast (with whipped cream) as much as the flowers and the Schnapps to the pickled herring… The Maypole though has begun to vanish since people are more and more living in the cities and neither got the time or the possibilty to find enough material to make it from. This past Friday we celebrated the Swedish National Holiday, Midsummer Eve out in the countryside with good friends. Their stable and barn. We had no Maypole to dance around at our Midsummer Fest, but I must admit that I kind of miss it. Not necessarily to dance the amusing “frog dance” around it *giggles*, but just to see it stand there garnished with garlands of flowers, as the phallic symbol it has been and now for traditions and the arrival for summer. The Midsummer Solstice (Day) is upon us tomorrow (21st June).  Many people from all across the globe from the mainstream religious to people with nature beliefs - will celebrate this longest day and the also observe the sun at its full life-giving strength.  Midsummers day is primarily a Celtic fire festival, representing the middle of summer, and the shortening of the days on its journey towards winter.  Midsummers day traditionally falls on June 23rd or 24th under the old calender, but it is now celebrated on June 21st. This day was very important to our ancestors as ancient monuments and stone circles were built to align with the rise of the sun on the morning of this day.  Stonehenge is the most famous monument on the Midsummer Solstice as tens of thousands of people attend the Stonehenge site every year.  Many huge bonfires were lit on high hill-tops, hill-sides and across the rural countryside to celebrate this day and also cattle would be walked between fires to clense

Midsummer Eve always falls on the third Friday in June. It is a survival of Teutonic pagan festivals celebrating the summer solstice. Also known as St. John´s Eve. I have decided that since there is only one month left of summer, I will turn my life around. I've already started writing in a diary again, cut down my internet time, and I will start biking again.
