But the visitors were unlucky not to claim at least a share of the spoils as they were denied by the woodwork on three occasions. Substitute Afonso Alves hit the post from 35 yards and both he and defender David Wheater headed against the bar in a late goalmouth scramble. Chelsea went into the game without top scorer Frank Lampard, who was suffering from a virus, while Gareth Southgate named an unchanged Boro side. Arsenal Can Be Champions Despite Middlesbrough Defeat
Talk of invincibility has been thrown out the window. Gareth Southgate's lowly Middlesbrough have inflicted a first league defeat on Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side. And so the naysayers once again begin to doubt the young Gunners. Eleven wins, four draws and one defeat place Arsenal a point ahead of last season's champions Manchester United, deservedly at the top of the Premier League table. Why, then, do the so-called pundits, players and fans alike, begin to question the squad? An Arsenal side missing four of their best players in Cesc Fabregas, Alex Hleb, Robin van Persie and Mathieu Flamini did indeed fall to a team hovering too close to the relegation zone. But look at any of the top four teams and imagine how they would do without four of their best players.Chelsea would be nothing without Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Michael Essien. Manchester United are far less potent without Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Even Rafa Benitez's crazy

      Thoughts on Arsenal-Middlesbrough
Apologies for the delay since my last post. Things were a little bit busy over the weekend, what with Christmas and all just around the corner. As a result, I didn’t get to do up a match preview or review of the weekend game against Middlesbrough. As you will surely already know now, the match ended in the Arsenal’s first Premiership defeat of the season, a 2-1 reverse at the Riverside. As most supporters have correctly pointed out, it was the worst performance of the season and it was a game that Arsenal deserved to lose. They boys were out-fought and out-thought in every facet of the game. As a result of the loss a lot of Arsenal supporters are starting to worry about what lies ahead for the club. I just can’t understand this. There’s no denying that Arsenal performed poorly and are unquestionably going through a tough patch of late but when it’s all said and done the side is still top of the league and have made a huge improvement on last season&rs

Lowly Middlesbrough End Arsenal's Unbeaten Record
I went skiing this weekend, thinking that it was a good batch of matches to miss.Villa vs. Portsmouth looked to be an exciting match, but the Gunners would have an easy win away to Middlesbrough, and we wouldn't be gaining any ground on our nearest rivals, as Manchester United faced lowly Derby.I was confident of an Arsenal win, but I had a friend of mine call me to tell me the final score. You could imagine the shock when he told me the names of the scorers.Downing, Sanli, and Rosicky. That meant 2-1 to Middlesbrough. It seems I chose a good weekend to go away. I would not have been too thrilled watching Arsenal's unbeaten run in the Premier League being ended by a team in the bottom three. We had better win on Wednesday when we host Steaua Bucharest, or else we might be lacking confidence for the big match with Chelsea on Sunday. What I've heard of today's game sure does make me hope that Fabregas, Hleb, and van Persie make it back before Sunday.

      Middlesbrough vs. Arsenal: Match Preview
High-flying Arsenal travel to the Riverside to face Gareth Southgate's struggling Middlesbrough this Sunday.Arsenal drew 1-1 with Newcastle midweek, and will face a stiffer challenge this weekend due to the absence of many key players. However, a Middlesbrough team sitting in the relegation zone shouldn't trouble the Gunners too much. Boro haven't won a game since September first at home to Birmingham, and sit in 18th with only 11 points from 15 games.Middlesbrough will be missing goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer as well as Mido, Brad Jones, and Matthew Bates. However, Boro will be boosted with Andrew Taylor's return.Arsenal are still missing four midfield players and last season's top striker Robin van Persie. United On Fire (Manchester United 4 - Middlesbrough 1)
United just gets better and better. We scored another 4 goals, making it 4 in 4 games. Don't know about you guys, but it's fast becoming my favourite number. I hope I don't jinx team with the number four fetish. Before I forget, this win takes us temporarily to the top of the table for a good 24hrs as Arsenal faces Liverpool on Sunday.United started the game with a scintillating goal from Nani in the 3rd minute. From a midfield position, Nani wiggled his way to the edge of the penalty area and let fly a superb volley straight into the Boro net. Mark Schwarzer didn't have a chance in hell to even get near the ball. Nani's celebration, although probably frowned upon by Fergie, was just as spectacular as the goal scored.Tevez had a chance to double United's lead a minute later but a superb tackle foiled the chance. Fuckin' Late Kickoff (Manchester United 1 - Middlesbrough 1)
I can't emphasize how fucking irritated I am with our performance in late kickoffs. We were trying to be what Fergie and Giggs had said in midweek....efficient. Unfortunately it all turned out wrong as we tried to play like Chelsea. Now the cushion has almost been completely swept from under our buttocks. Chelsea now holds their own destiny in their hands. All they need to do is to win their remaining premiership games, including the one with us.The game started brightly for us. Richardson gave us the lead after a superb pass from Scholes and some brilliant running from Rooney in the 3rd minute. Just as Chelsea has been making a habit of scoring late in games, we've been doing the same with early goals. The difference is when you score late goals, the other hasn't a chance of hitting back. And Boro did just that at the stroke of half time. It was also partly due to Rio hurting his groin again and was practically immobile when Viduka scored the equalizer. Our tactics after going one go

Ronaldo's Penalty Sees United Into The Semis (Manchester United 1 - Middlesbrough 0)
How Southgate must hate to face Ronaldo. This is the third meeting between the sides this season and Ronaldo has earned 3 penalties, taking the penalties himself in the last 2.The game itself wasn't really anything to shout about. Neither side really played well. Boro were content to sit back and let Viduka take long shots, while United didn't really create much. When they did, the chance mostly fell to Rooney who left his scoring boots at home. Credit must also be given to Mark Schwarzer. He must have made at least 3-4 utterly brilliant saves from Rooney.Smith who was given his first start of the season looked sharp and was his usual pesky self, irritating the Boro defenders to no end. Carrick also had a pretty outstanding game, by his usual standards. Giggs started in midfield and was superb beside Carrick. I suspect alot of it was due to the fact the entire Boro midfield was playing like auxiliary defenders. The game had looked like it was going to be a draw until the 75th minute w

United Live to Fight Another Day (Middlesbrough 2 - Manchester United 2)
Gotta hate these late games. We never look good in late kickoffs and getting a draw here doesn't help our cause. The game started brightly with good chances falling for both sides. Kuszczak made an early save from Downing and set the tone for what could be an entertaining game. Despite the loss of Scholes, and the general crappiness of Carrick, we played well in midfield. Rooney dropped deep to help out occasionally. In the 23rd minute, a moment of brilliance from Rooney gave United the first goal. He jinked around two defenders to make space for the shot and scored with a sweet strike. Unfortunately that was his only positive contribution of the game. He looked sluggish and a step slow the entire game. Personally he was the worst performer in a United shirt today. After the goal, United took complete control of the game. It's ridiculous how we didn't manage to score a second goal with all the possession and shots. Boro was reduced to counters and nearly had one when Yakubu turned Vidi

Abou Diaby definitely misses the trip with reported knee ligament trouble and is joined by Freddy, Hleb, Gallas, Van Persie and the Beast on the treatment table. It sounds like Diaby’s injury could potentially be serious, which, if the case, is a real shame after being given another tantalising glimpse of his of his potential. His crunching tackling and leggy runs through the midfield dredging up a few fond memories of Paddy, whether he can go on to be a player of similar stature to the great man remains to be seen but having been out for nine months already I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to him pulling on the famous red and white shirt again soon. This leaves

THE Match Report: Middlesbrough 2 - 0 Charlton
I really don't know what to think, I have been a fan for most of my 18 year life and I have been visiting The Valley regularly for around 5 years. Now is the time I come to think "Why didn't I support Man U?". Well thats a stupid thing to say as I love Charlton and I will always support that, something I never want to change, but recently myself and many other fans have been so low. Why? You may

      Middlesbrough v Fulham
top5bet went to see the Charlton v Liverpool game on Saturday. It really was like watching Stevie and Co. in a training match and should have been a lot more than 3-0 to Liverpool. A couple of pieces of magic from Bellamy and Gerrard - who was given a central midfield berth from which to control the game - gave the scoreline a more accurate reflection of events on the pitch.Charlton are long odds on to go down (1.32 Betfair) and on this showing they will most certainly be playing in the Championship next year. They were truly awful and Les Reed hardly inspires confidence in a recovery.Anyway, on to more pressing issues...Premiership 18 December 2006, Fulham v MiddlesbroughA quick run through...Fulham have won 2-1 at home four times this season and Middlesbrough have lost by the same score away from home three times. Chris Coleman's charges have won four of the five Premiership meetings between the sides in London. Middlesbrough have gone 12 Premiership away games without a win. There

Controversial Penalty Mars Good Win (Middlesbrough 1 - Manchester United 2)
It was the Riverside and last year's demolition was still fresh on my mind. I had feared the worst coming into this game. For some reason, Boro always puts on a good performance whenever a good side comes visiting. Thankfully this time we came mentally prepared and equiped. Of course getting a dubious penalty to open the scoring was really welcomed. Ronaldo had passed Schwarzer and was thru on goal but he stumbled along the way. Although my initial thoughts were 'PENALTY!', the TV replay did not show any contact. Ronaldo had dived, or at least he hand stumbled. It didn't matter, the referee gave a penalty and Saha prompt stood forward and scored. The good guys were one up, and based on our play, we richly deserved it. The second half was a bit hazy for me. The game was played at freaking 1am in Singapore, and I was really having trouble keeping my eyes open by half time. I even had to go the extra length to call Kentona on the phone to engage in a conversation to keep myself awake.

      Manchester 2 x Middlesbrough 1
Do lado do Boro, Abel Xavier esteve també

Middlesbrough manager: ‘I’m a weirdo and I think we’ll beat Chelsea’
Come now, Gareth, don’t be so hard on yourself. There’s nothing wrong with believing in your team’s abilities, even if some of the recent performances have been pretty pretty dire. Especially the 2-0 home defeat to Cardiff in the FA Cup - how do you explain that one away? The 1-0 home win over Derby [...]
