Sun Microsystems Changing Stock Ticker To JAVA
Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) has just announced that they will be changing their stock symbol to JAVA. I don’t normally bother with any news of the financial sort on this blog, but this change is a bit interesting and is stirring a lot of speculation. If, like me, you’re wondering if the ticker change somehow presages an exit from the bare-knuckles server business… As a software company, Sun would have different but more profitable battles to fight, which means more resources for improving Solaris and working with Google, among other things. In short: there’s opportunity here, even if seizing the opportunity would require an extreme makeover of the company. Why I work for Sun Microsystems - I
I aspired to join Sun Microsystems - in part because of Scott (you know, McNealy). So here's my "Why I work at Sun" Scott McNealy story... Many years ago as a humble coder (OK - probably one of the best C programmers in the UK - I've always been modest) I had achieved an "at oneness" with the language, it's syntax & it's complexities - furthermore I understood the machine environment within which it ran to the nth degree too. One day having been sent a copy of "Computing" I read with interest Scott's famous "The Network is the Computer" quotation (I realise now, fourteen-ish years later, that he didn't actually make it up himself - and that the quote is from John Gage - but I hope you can kindly forgive a idealistic young man for his naiveté). It made me think - a lot. At the time I would go to bed and the last thing I would think of before drifting off to sleep was this concept and it's ramifications - attempting to allow my sub-conscious

Sun Microsystems to Update Java for Cell Phones
Sun Microsystems today previewed JavaFX Script, a new scripting language for creating rich content and applications for Java-powered devices such as mobile phones. Revamping its Java software in an effort to compete more effectively in the fast-growing market for Internet-connected mobile phones, Sun Microsystems was an early leader in developing Internet-oriented software, but faces increasing competition from Symbian, Microsoft, Palm, Research in Motion and a variety of smaller Linux-oriented efforts. JavaFX Script takes advantage of the Java Runtime Environment’s (JRE) ubiquity across devices and allows professionals to begin building applications based on their current knowledge base. It also uses Java technology’s “write once, run anywhere” capability to let consumers access content whenever and wherever on any Java-powered device. JavaFX applications will run on JavaFX Mobile, Sun’s software system for mobile devices also previewed at JavaOne, as wel

Sun's system is claimed to have ten times the capacity of any other VoD server now on the market. What Sun has brewed up is an offering its calling the Sun Streaming System that, in its maximum configuration, can dish up 160,000 simultaneous video streams, pumping the video out to users via 32 10 Gb/s Ethernet ports. Such a high end configuration will cost only about $50 per video stream, or around $8 million in total, Sun said. Such a configuration could also store the entire Netflix video library - about 60,000 movie titles - in a single six foot high storage rack. What Sun has crafted compares to estimates of as much as $200 to $250 per stream from competitors, although with the IPTV industry in its infancy those first-to-market prices are sure to tumble rapidly. That hard work isn't just States based, it's replicated across the world: so a little bit closer to home, the management teams in the EMEA operation, led by Peter Ryan, VP for EMEA (bio here), and in the UK and Ireland, my own MD, leader of the UK & Ireland operation, Trudy Norris-Grey (VP for the UK & Ireland - bio here), have all been getting busy helping to deliver these results.
