Such has been Apple’s impact on the digital media player market that it would seem that just about every (though, in our opinion, by no means all) manufacturer looking to carve a niche of their own are seemingly, in the most part, left trailing in Apple’s wake – and few would argue that this has undoubtedly been the case when it comes to Microsoft’s much lamented Zune player.
It’s not that the Zune is an especially bad device, its just that, in terms of specification and innovation it’s hardly acted to set the world alight and, whilst a great deal of the criticism concerning the Zune has by no means been unfounded, we cannot help but feel that, from the outset, Microsoft really ought to have known that Apple’s crown would need to be sideswiped by something fairly spectacular in order to displace it. And, whilst the Zune is certainly a capable device, you’d be hard pressed to find a single review that uses such a term in the context of either the Zune’s capabilities,
Microsoft has unveiled the updated Zune Player. The Zune 2 will come in 4GB, 8GB (Flash versions) and an 80GB hard drive model. The 80GB version is only available in black, while the 4GB and 8GB versions will be available in black, red, pink, and green. The new Zune's will allow users to sync their player to a computer over a home Wi-Fi network. But don’t worry if you already have a Zune as this feature will be available to you via a firmware upgrade. Users who use Windows Media Center, Vista Home or Vista Ultimate can now sync PC-recorded TV content directly to your Zune. I don’t usually write about technology but I thought I need to share this, badly.
As most of my friends and colleagues know, I totally dislike Microsoft, and am a huge fan of Apple.
So it almost comes as a surprise that I now say I am not going to get the Apple iPhone if and when it arrives in Singapore, but the Microsoft Zune.
For what other phone is there on the market that can provide the classic features that remind me so much of the 70s and 80s when I was growing up? You know, like the pulse dial, small little cube flashbulbs and Polaroids?
Ah… nostalgia, it’s a wonderful and powerful marketing hook, isn’t it?

Digan lo que quieran del Microsoft Zune, ese reproductor multimedia lanzado por la compañía de Redmond en un afán de quitarle mercado al iPod de Apple, pero lo cierto, es que su publicidad es bastante creativa, como ya vimos en el pasado
Es más, ni siquiera creo que deberíamos llamarlo publicidad, sino simplemente, cortos “artísticos” porque, después de todo, en donde queda el público objetivo? Donde están los objetivos publicitarios? La estrategia de mensaje? Los comerciales del Zune son tan disonantes entre sí, que la verdad, no hay una verdadera relación.
Pero en fin, a quien le importa? Dudo mucho que Microsoft supere a Apple y su iPod. Al menos un par de generaciones más del Zune tendrán que pasar para que se le pueda considerar, pues, un rival hecho y derecho (aunque esos intentos con el WiFi, si bien recontra limitados -solo nos permite reproducir una canción transmitida de Zune a Zune tres veces - están bastante interesantes).
