I just saw on Scoble’s blog something I have been waiting to see for a couple days/ that Microsoft Vista is now available for download in beta.
Microsoft has a section on the Vista site with their Vista Update Advisor, which I downloaded and ran. My PC (Athlon XP 3000+ with 1GB DDR) is apparently quite capable of running Vista. I was quite pleased I would be able to beta test the system, and started the process of downloading it.
To my dis-belief and horror it is only available in DVD format to download and sadly my DVD-Burner died two months ago only 10 months into its life. There is an option to PURCHASE the beta at a cost of 10.98GBP +VAT.
So let me get this straight. Microsoft, who has been late in delivering an OS by 4 years, and has pissed a lot of people off is now charging for me to try their OS before I buy!
So with my Vista ready PC I am still plodding along, I booted into XP this morning to run the advisor to see if I would be able to beta test Vista. I am not saying

Windows Anytime Upgrade is an innovative service by Microsoft to help users upgrade to higher versions of Windows when they find the need to. It was, and still is, a great idea by offering an easy and cost-efficient method of upgrading at any time, removeing some of the contemplation to initially purchasing any versions of Windows Vista, in doubt you might “grow out of it”. Previously available only through purchase online, now it also comes in a box.
Initially, the program was restrictive because users could only purchase the upgrade online through one channel, Microsoft, limiting both availability and choice. But now it appears that “Upgrade Packs” you can touch and feel can be bought from many IT retailers. It doesn’t seem like anyone took notice, but according to Amazon these have been available since May 1.
Apart from a pretty cool looking and informative packaging, it’s not clear what these packs actually contain. This might be the “DVD

Microsoft's latest operating system Windows Vista will not be ready for the launch of the world's first x86 CPU designed to integrate no less than four processing cores on the same die of silicon. Initially, AMD announced the availability of its Quad-Core Opteron processor codenamed Barcelona by the end of August. I walked into a local computer shop, looking for nothing in particular, whereby I found a leaflet advertising Windows Vista in all it’s wonderful shapes and sizes. It was well designed, don’t get me wrong, but by god one thing made me laugh.
I’m sorry, but if I had a new “cutting edge” piece of software, I’m sure I could find something better to advertise it than a card game. I mean, my phone has card games on it, and they are a lot better.
