Have you anything like this? Is there aught in your heart with which to enrich this poor and needy world? All around the beggars lie, with their whining voices, their thin outstretched hands, their helplessness and misery. Are you preparing to go into the great Temple of Life by yourselves, passing alone through the beautiful gate of early manhood and womanhood; or will you pick
There is a sense in which we do well to remember the past misdoings of our lives - that we may be humbled and warned; that we may not expose ourselves to temptations which have shown themselves too strong for us; that we may be led to a more careful self-watch and more entire dependence upon God. But we ought not to dwell upon our past sins as though they were ever present to th
It is very important to have a noble ideal. Suppose two young hearts begin to love, or that they have entered wedded life; is it not of inestimable importance to read to them those imperishable words in which Robert Browning declares his love to his wife, and she hers, and to remind them how he yearly kissed the steps of the church at Marylebone where they were wed, because she
Let us "follow on to know the Lord." Let us count all things but loss for the excellency of His knowledge. Let us make every endeavour to grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our God and Saviour. In doing this we must be content to pass through times of comparative darkness. You cannot know the sadder aspects of Christ's character, unless you are prepared to go with Him into t

Many executives and managers want to create and then dominate new markets. The rewards include unmatched brand awareness, the luxurious financial position of having no competition, and the exhilaration of building something completely new.
Creating and Dominating New Markets shows managers, executives, and business owners how to emulate the remarkable success of sa
Also, Christ is in us as a treasury of unknown grace and blessing; our light and salvation; our life and strength. If we cannot hold the door against the devil, the Stronger than he can do it for us, and will do, at the feeblest call of our faith. Let us put Christ between us and temptation. Let us not be content with resistance, but take more of Christ's grace as the antidore. Christ
If you carefully watch yourselves, you will find that failure in temptation is always preceded by some permitted evil, which took place perhaps days before. The final assault is sudden, but the sappers and miners had been at work long before. The tree fell unexpectedly in the hurricane which swept over the forest in the night; but the borer-worm had been at its heart for weeks b
From Saved and Kept by F. B. Meyer I am constantly meeting people who complain that the joy experienced by them in their consecration to God has faded away after the first few days, like light fades off a landscape; and they complain bitterly, as if they had receded from the position which they had taken up, and, in seeking their lost joy, they become involved in deeper darkness
Do you not know this? All temptation begins with the first flitting thought, which shows itself like the air of a fugue - merely a suggestion, a fancy, a desire. It seems innocent enough. You are disposed to admit it. Why shouldn't you? It is surely needless to make too much ado about what seems so innocent, or, at least, so trifling. And that thought may lie in your heart, like
There was no pause in His life of devotion to His Father's will. Always the devoted Servant, ever the obedient Son, instant in season, and out of season, to do the work with which the Father has entrusted Him. With steadfast face He made for His Cross; with unswerving purpose He accomplished our redemption. We might well wish for this. Days in which the high purpose of our life
Four Major Transformations by Herbert Meyer Currently, there are four major transformations that are shaping political, economic and world events. These transformations have profound implications for American business owners, our culture and our way of life. 1. The War in Iraq There are three major monotheistic religions in the world
Probably, Christ oftenest comes through the night and storm, when the wind is contrary and the strength giving out, when the sky is black with the hurrying clouds, and the wind churns the water into a yeasty foam; when the hopes of former years have been disappointed, and the light that shone so brightly has faded; when ill-health oppresses, when heart and flesh fail, when our d
To those who are seeking rest. - We often seek rest in the wrong way. We think we must go down lower into humiliation, or climb up into a higher experience. We go backward and forward like birds that have got imprisoned in a room, and persist in flying to and fro, refusing to let themselves be caught by the hand which longs to capture them only to fling them out through the wind
There is nothing else for you but to come to this. As long as you wrestle with God, you miss His richest blessings. Your hands are so occupied with your grasping and wrenching, that they are not open enough to receive His choice bestowments of life and peace. Jacob wrestled with God the whole night, and was no further advanced. It was when he could wrestle no more, because the s

About a month ago I wrote a post titled I miss Harry Potter in which I wondered if there would ever be another series like it. A mother named Stephanie Meyer is taking on that challenge. She has already published three books of a vampire series with an eagerly awaited fourth book due out this August. And the first book is already being adapted into a movie. The names of the first three books are Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse but the series is known as the Twilight series. The genre over these novels is considered fantasy/romance/horror. Although considered young adult, they are big fat books just like the Harry Potter books were. I haven't read any yet, but from what I've read about them, and from skimming the first one, they remind me of a slightly younger version of the Anne Rice vampire
Wilt thou, young soul, be made whole? You have been double-minded: will you have the single eye? You have been double-hearted: will you have the single purpose? You have been infirm in purpose, cowardly in confession, paralysed in action: do you choose at whatever cost to be made whole, as those angels that excel in strength, and do His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His word? Are you willing to be made whole - though it should involve you in obloquy and scorn; though it mean the loss of companionships that have been as the apple of your eye, and the forsaking of those scenes which are familiar as the porch, where this man had sheltered for thirty-eight years? Tell the Saviour so! Discover the one point in your character in which this moral paralysis has wor
I know very well how hopeless it seems ever to conquer where you have so often failed. Your own energy and natural force can never meet the case; but this is the province of the Saviour. The whole need not the physician, but they that are sick; and He comes to make the sick whole. Believe that in Him is the complement of your need; that He does more than heal, because He can make what used to be your weakness, your strength; and what had been your perpetual failure the most noticeable grace in your character. It seems impossible, but to God all things are possible."The most impossible of allIs that from sin I e'er should cease;Yet shall it be - I know it shall!Jesus, look to thy faithfulness!Since nothing is too hard for Thee,All things are possible to me." &n

We all have our faults. Every winter I feel guilty for not utilizing my orange and meyer lemon trees to their full potential. Two years ago I attempted orange marmalade and it turned out a thick gluey mess. Last year, I focused on juicing as much as I could stand to drink. We had extremely high levels of vitamin C for a good solid month ... no scurvy here.

The stay at the Jungle Dome is probably one of the better places that I have stayed at. With the sounds of the birds and other wildlife it makes for a peaceful time in Belize. The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Limited would love to have Heyneke Meyer back in the Bull kraal - and they've issued a statement to that effect. In fact, talks with Meyer about his future at the Blue Bulls have been conducted in the period leading up to his application for the position as national rugby coach, according to the statement. And although it would be conjecture at a time where little is being said and Meyer is not available for comment, there has for some time been speculation that former Bulls coach Meyer would be employed as a director of coaching by the Blue Bulls, should he lose out on the Springbok coaching job.Nothing formal in this regard has, however, been said - not even now after he was overlooked by the President's Council, who opted for Peter de Villiers as Jake White'
I had a whole list of things I was assigned to do tonight. Dave went off to the hockey game and made me promise that I would sharpen knives and research steam cleaners and cameras, that I would do laundry and figure out what to do with the black truffles that Santa brought us yesterday.Did I do any of those things? Maybe a couple. The truffles I took care of (and I even grocery shopped for the dinners these truffles have shaped.) But that's where it stops.Let me tell you about the dream I had last night. In my dream, I was running. Not running FROM something, just running for fun. I remember it was on a college campus, and the buildings were old, the trees full and leafy. I remember the thrill of the run, how much I was enjoying myself. And then I took a wrong turn, a shortcut down a "dar
A while ago, I posted a container cabin in Northern Minnesota (Holyoke Cabin) built by Hive Modular architect Paul Stankey and his wife Sarah Nordby, and now Stankey’s partner Bryan Meyer has posted the cabin he and his wife Anne Ryan built some years ago, called Clara Cabin…. Built on Ryan’s family property, the 220sf off-grid cabin is described as “a glorified tent - a primitive room in the woods”. I’m in love.

We've had a really enthusiastic response to our Ranaan Meyer interview episode (featuring a healthy amount of music from the excellent band Time for Three) and video episode of Ranaan playing his tune I'm Tryin'. In fact, we've been getting great responses to all of our recent (and previous) Contrabass Conversations projects, including our Orchestral Excerpt Breakdown with co-host John Grillo and our Virtual Lesson video series with Andy Anderson, as well as our older episodes featuring François Rabbath, Eric Hochberg, Lawrence Hurst, Greg Sarchet, Jeff Turner, Brad Opland, Michael Hovnanian, Rob Kassinger, and our other fabulous guests. We're fast approaching the 50,000 mark for total downloaded episodes, which is a pretty hefty number for a niche podcast on the double bass. While I'd still put these out if that figure were half that (or even less), having a healthy audience is further motivation to keep putting these episodes out on a regular basis. Those num

Here is a link to an extended version of that video we've all seen of that 21 year old kid, Andrew Meyer, from the University of Florida being tased at a school assembly while trying to question John Kerry. The clip of the actual tasing has been on the news over and over again, but it's very different when you see the incident in full. There's so many disturbing things about this. Here' s just a few:Andrew didn't push his way up to the front to ask these questions, like the crazy person the media has made him out to be. He waited his turn and was given the mike.He was holding up and asking questions about Armed Madhouse by Greg Palast. I've read this book and within in it we find out that millions of voters were caged by the Republicans. I assumed that nothing was being done because our representatives didn't know about it. However, John Kerry clearly says he read the book. How could he have read that book, and 3 years later still have done nothing about it? More importantly, why

I just completed an excellent interview with Time for Three bassist Ranaan Meyer. John Grillo (a Contrabass Conversations regular) and I co-interviewed Ranaan, and you can expect the first part of this interview on next week's podcast.Ranaan is well-versed in classical, bluegrass, and jazz stylings as well as being a talented composer, and I think that people will really get a lot out of this upcoming interview.
Meyer's film debut was in the TV film Strapped in 1993, although her role in the cyberpunk thriller Johnny Mnemonic was perhaps her breakthrough performance. Before that, however, she also had a role in the TV series Beverly Hills 90210 as Lucinda Nicholson. In addition to Johnny Mnemonic, she has had other roles in science fiction productions, such as Starship Troopers, Birds of Prey and Star Trek: Nemesis. Two of her most recent films were the 2004 horror/thriller hit Saw and its 2005 sequel Saw II. She made several guest appearances on Friends and Miss Match. She also played one of the leads on the now canceled Point Pleasant. In March 2006 Meyer was in the series premiere episode of Thief as Wanda the wife of Andre Braugher's character Nick. However, her character was killed in the first episode in a car wreck. She reprised her role as Kerry in the third installment of the Saw series Saw III, released on October 27, 2006.Meyer was born in Queens, New York to a father who owns an a

Who Tobey McGuire really is? With Spider-Man 3 currently playing in the local cinemas, one never stops to wonder how he currently started. Maguire’s mother was actually an 18-year-old office worker, his father a 20-year-old restaurant cook married her, and they were only briefly married a couple years after Maguire was born. His childhood was spent in Washington, Oregon, and California, including some of the seedier sections of Los Angeles. The family was occasionally on welfare, poor when he with his mother, and sometimes he was stashed with grandparents or other relatives. At 13, Maguire decided he wanted to be a “chef” like his old man. He even signed up for a home economics class, but his mother said she would give him $100 if he took a drama class instead. After ninth grade, he dropped out of high school to free his time for more acting assignments. Maguire had met Leonardo DiCaprio at casting calls, and in 1993 that friendship got Maguire a small part in DiCapr
I first made this sorbet last week, following the recipe for italian lemon sorbetto in Elsa Petersen-Schepelern’s book, “Gelato, Sorbets and Ice Creams.” To this recipe I added 1/4 cup of limoncello and substituted Meyer lemons to yield a sorbet that simply screamed, “MEYER LEMON!!” Although delicious, the first bite left you with puckered lips. After a few more spoonfuls I got over the initial shock, but would anyone but a citrus fiend be able to handle it?
The taste test
I feared tasters would respond like my daughter, who doesn’t like to admit when she doesn’t like something others do. Sure enough:
“Mmmm, I like it,” she says after tasting it, rubbing her tummy.
I then ask, “Do you want another bite?”
“No,” she replies, shaking her head. With only 1/2 cup of water to dilute the 2 cups of lemon juice, it was no wonder why. I can’t help but wonder how sour the recipe would have been with eureka or oth
Last Wednesday we saw singer/ songwriter Emi Meyer perform at the Montmarte Lounge in Hollywood. I have never been before and for a club it was huge with tons of swankin' expensive modern furniture, lighting and 3 bars! The show was a multiple act with art show, but I think the event didn't match the venue. Emi has a 4 song Ep trio style with drums, bass and a 'live at the Hotel Cafe' CD with 14 solo tracks. It’s Meyer lemon season. Every week my son and I go to attend our violin and viola lessons where we wait outside the studio next to a fantastic Meyer lemon tree. Once the lesson is over, we gather up a half dozen lemons to take home. A cross between a lemon and orange, Meyer lemons are less acidic and great for baking. Up to now I have mostly been making lemon bars, but have always been on the lookout for a lemon cookie recipe.
Most citrus cookie recipes I found were accompanied by a powdered sugar based icing. At first, I was reluctant to make an iced cookie, as I was really looking for a classic cookie shape and texture. I was almost tempted to make a lemon and rosemary recipe I found since we have fresh rosemary in our backyard, but was determined for a lemon only cookie. Some recipes had shortening, others were shortbread. Finally I found this recipe in The Great American Cookie Cookbook. As usual, I upped the amount of lemon zest called for since Meyer lemons aren’t a
Congratulations to the people at C.R. Meyer for a safety record that has 50% fewer incidents than others doing like work. That record along with their safety program has qualified them for OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program's (VPP) Star status. This program has previously not been available to general contractors.
