      Shopping in Mexico City
Mexico City abounds with plazas, food markets, and public squares where all manner of handicrafts and other items are on display for sale. The Mercado de los Sabados en San Angel—a Saturday market—features a wide range of clothes, jorongos (a traditional coat), jewelry, handcrafted paper, textiles, and traditional sweets. All of these come from various parts of Mexico, giving you a glimpse of the cultures of the other cities from a single location. As most people find, the prices of most items are quite low compared to the U.S. or Europe. Clothes, for instance, can be found of a very high quality and yet be priced as low as $15. One of the plazas that must be seen by shopping enthusiasts is the Plaza de La Ciudadela. The small stands in this rather large marketplace are overflowing wi

How to Finish a Marathon - 1968 Olympics in Mexico City
In the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Tanzanian runner John Stephen Ahkwari was the last runner in the marathon. He came in about an hour and a half after the winner, practically carrying his leg, as it was so bloodied and bandaged. Film Director Bud Greenspan asked him, “Why did you keep going?” He said, “You don’t understand. My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start a race, they sent me to finish it.” Here is the video (duration 2min:19sec) Tanzania’s John Stephen Ahkwari - Click To Play If you find this site helpful, please leave a donation so you can enjoy the spirit of giving too. First, marriage, then abortion, and now prostitution. Mexico City is wannabe San Francisco
Now that's progress. Mexico, the supposed home of millions committed to family values, is considering legalizing prostitution. According to the article, previous to this latest capitulation, Mexico City had already officially recognized gay unions and legalized abortion (It's odd that the least controversial is the last one to appear). I realize that I may be totally over-reacting, but assuming the same pattern evolves in Mexico as in the United States and Europe, Mexico is going to be just like the most most culturally liberal parts of the world, except poorer and more violent. They can now claim no advantage over their Northern neighbor, whereas before one could have said, "we may not have as many things, but we believe in family and tradition." It's funny how we expend so much effort to capture at least some of the decency of our fathers* while other countries just give up. They may never have been competitive economically, but Mexicans had many things of which to be proud.
