One of the keys to successful, sustainable weight loss is to keep your metabolism working at top speed, burning as many calories as possible. When you start to eat less, however, your metabolism will slow down in order to conserve energy. This is what causes the bane of every dieter's existence: the plateau. Every dieter encounters a plateau at some point in the weight-loss journey, and sometimes

A new study conducted by Nestlé Research Center along with a team from Imperial College London has found, that probiotics, such as drinking yoghurts, which contain live bacteria, may have a serious effect on the metabolism. As probiotics contain potentially beneficial bacteria playing an important role in the metabolism, they have an effect on the biochemistry of the gut microbes. Probiotics contain so-called “friendly” bacteria, which help the digestive system. The study of how exactly it occurs was the goal of the research. Probiotics Effect Fat Amount The researchers had used two groups of mice for figuring out, how probiotics effect the metabolism. One group had received probiotic treatment, and the other one had not. Cholesterol is transported to and from the cells by carriers called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as “bad” cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as “good” cholesterol. These two types of lipids, along with triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol, make up your total cholesterol count, which can be determined through a blood test.
LDL (Bad) Cholesterol
When too much LDL (bad) cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, heart attack or stroke c
You may already know that saturated fats found in animal fat, like marbling in steak, sausage, cheese and butter can raise LDL cholesterol levels and clog arteries. Trans fat is similarly bad for our hearts. You should eat as little trans fat as possible.
What is Trans Fat?
Trans fat is formed when a liquid vegetable oil is partially hydrogenated. This chemical process changes a liquid fat to a more solid fat. It also keeps the fat from spoiling quickly.
Why Limit Trans Fat?
Trans fat raises LDL cholesterol levels. It may also lower “good” HDL cholesterol. People who eat more trans fat are at greater risk of heart disease.
Tips for Limiting Trans Fat:
Read food labels: You’ll want to check the ingredients list and the Nutrition Facts panel. The Nutrition Facts panel lists the amou

Metabolism is a collection of chemical reactions that takes place in the body's cells to convert the fuel in the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do, from moving to thinking to growing. Specific proteins in the body control the chemical reactions of metabolism, and each chemical reaction is coordinated with other body functions. In fact, thousands of metabolic reactions happen at the same time - all regulated by the body - to keep our cells healthy and working.Metabolism is a constant process that begins when we're conceived and ends when we die. It is a vital process for all life forms - not just humans. If metabolism stops, a living thing dies.MetabolismAfter food is eaten, molecules in the digestive system called enzymes break proteins down into amino acids, fat
The number of calories a person burns in a day is affected by how much that person exercises, the amount of fat and muscle in his or her body, and the person's basal metabolic rate. The basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is a measure of the rate at which a person's body "burns" energy, in the form of calories, while at rest. The BMR can play a role in a person's tendency to gain weight. For example, a person with a low BMR (who therefore burns fewer calories while at rest or sleeping) will tend to gain more pounds of body fat over time, compared with a similar-sized person with an average BMR who eats the same amount of food and gets the same amount of exercise.Basal Metabolic rateWhat factors influence a person's BMR? To a certain extent, a person's basal metabolic rate is inherited - passed o
BODY SIZESize of the body has a major influence on the speed of metabolism. A naturally big body means more cells to maintain which requires more calories, therefore larger people tend to have a high metabolism.WEIGHT GAINExtra weight also helps speed up metabolism as each movement requires the contraction of more muscle cells to move the mass, even if much of the extra weight gained is fat it still requires more effort to move, however fat is not metabolically active so metabolism speed will only be higher during movement. BODY COMPOSITIONBody composition or proportion of weight determines the speed of metabolism. Body composition is the difference between total lean weight compared to fat weight. A higher percentage of lean body weight results in a high metabolic rate compared with indiv
Metabolism can be increased by these small tips:1. Get active - it's a sure-fire way to increase the amount of muscle you have, which in turn will speed up your metabolism. Do a mixture of aerobic and resistance training for best results. And don't forget to be more active in your daily life too.2. Eat little and often - there's evidence that eating small, regular meals throughout the day, rather than one or two large meals, may help to keep your metabolism ticking over. Surprisingly, around 10 percent of the calories we use each day go on digesting and absorbing food - so the more times you eat, the greater this effect is likely to be.3. Eat plenty of protein-rich foods - research shows that around 25 percent of calories in a protein-rich meal may be burnt off. But make sure you choose lo
Low calorie dieting slows your metabolism, making it progressively more difficult to lose weight and keep it off. The failure rate of most diets is astronomical, yet people continue to try one after another, always hoping that each new scheme will provide the solution. If you’re a veteran of the diet wars, the one word answer to your dilemma may be muscle. Let’s take a look at why diets often fail and how strength training and a healthy appetite can rev up your metabolism.Dieting fails due to a combination of hormonal changes, muscle loss, and flat out frustration. When faced with a shortage of calories, your body’s natural response is to conserve fat. This mechanism may have come in handy for your distant ancestors trying to survive a famine, but the "starvation response" and it’s

By: Lisa Buldo The key to speeding your metabolism is to re-ignite the furnace inside of you. The key is eating and exercising. You will never jump start your metabolism by not eating. Eating is absolutely key! Isn't that good to know? You must adapt a healthy way of eating before you begin to exercise, especially if you have been sedentary for a while. You hear stories of people who go out to shovel snow, and have a heart attack on the spot. Many times it's because they weren't used to exercising the heart that hard, and the heart couldn't take it. For this reason, I believe it is important to get the nutrition down first. For speeding the metabolism, you need to do a few things: 1. Eat some protein at each meal to keep the body in calorie burning mode and your glycemic index as

Cigarette smoking forces the heart to beat faster. The smoker's heart may beat up to 20 times more per minute, when a cigarette is inhaled. Smokers should know that the most common cause of smoking-related death is extra stress on the heart by smoking. A smoking habit of 20 cigarettes a day puts the same amount of stress on the heart as 90 pounds of extra weight would. When smoker stops smoking, heart rate slows down somewhat, causing metabolism to drop slightly. Even with retarded metabolism, which is the signal to a slight weight gain, smoker can take steps to build metabolic rate back up in ways that benefit health rather than destroy it, as smoking does. If weight gain due to quitting smoking is something you fear or is a reality you are struggling with, use exercise to boost metabolism

Leptin is a protein produced by fats that appear to play an important role in how the body manages fat storage through brain signals. Years ago it was thought by scientists that lower leptin levels would increase appetite. Current research has now found that it does just the opposite and decreases appetite. There is clear evidence that green tea's polyphenols (EGCG) are a factor in depressing leptin as well as affecting other hormone levels important in regulating appetite.

By: Graham Lavery Imagine the human body as a car that has an engine that makes everything work inside. Metabolism is the speed at which your engine works and it is fueled by calories. That is why the value representing the speed at which the body burns calories is known as the metabolic rate. Our bodies spend a lot of time at rest and most of their energy is consumed in such situations. We need calories to feed our metabolism so we can stay alive. There is a certain number of calories that we must take in every day so we can support all the body activities without hurting it.Calories are burnt absolutely in every moment of our existence, when we eat, when we sleep, when we go shopping, all the time. A thing that you must need to know is that people with more muscular mass consume more calories than the others that have a higher percentage of fat in their bodies. There are other factors that contribute to the metabolic rate of burning calories. The amount of muscle a person has is a very strong determinant in the ability to burn calories and shed fat. So it goes without saying that exercise is essential. Build strength and resistance by working out at least twice a week, preferably with weights. Do easy exercises in between workouts. Simple tasks such as walking the dog and using the stairs in place of the elevator can already take off calories. The key is to match the amount of eating to the amount of activity one has. Here are some guidelines in getting the right exercise:
For strength training
• Increase the amount of repetitions of a particular exercise.
• Add the level of resistance
• Utilize advance exercise techniques if possible
For cardiovascular training
• Insert intervals between exercises
• Perform cross-training a
Recently a young man asked me about losing weight. His question was, as he has quite a lot of weight to lose he wanted to lose it really quickly as in 20 Kgs per month. I advised against this.To lose this weight, he’d have to speed up his Metabolism. But like most people, he was under the impression that to lose weight, he would have to starve himself. In other words, eating less = less calories eaten. Therefore eating less must make him lose pounds and inches. ·This is Myth Number 1It is better to eat smaller meals more often, say every two to three hours, rather than eating two to three big meals a day.You know how babies are usually ‘Demand Fed’ meaning instead of being fed by the clock, they are fed when they are hungry. If you have ever tried to feed a newborn baby when it’s not ready, you will know what I mean. It just isn’t interested. So what happens? In time the baby’s body adjusts to three meals a day and it is then considered ‘normal’. But as adults it would

As discussed in the previous article, very low calorie diets like kimkins can cause gall stones due to rapid weight loss as well as the lack of fat that is commonly seen on this diet. This, may also be a danger for low calorie diets like Tony Ferguson which also commonly results in rapid weight loss, very low fat and can easily slip into the VLCD category for some as well. Liquid Protein diets and Sudden DeathA concern is the sudden deaths associated with the liquid protein shake VLCD diets in the 70s and 80s. Now yes, there was a major issue with the type of protein used but it wasn't the only issue. Of course there have been improvements in the quality and thus safety of these liquid meal replacement diets over the short term (though they still carry lots of risks) BUT they do not show any safety for unsupervised diets, let alone ones that are simply a stab in the dark and offer no real nutritional guidelines and minimums, to avoid risks associated with VLCD dieting and fasting. I s
Green tea has had more than its fair share of good press lately, with several studies touting its protective effect against heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and tumors. Now a new, albeit small, study out of Switzerland reports that green tea may have the power to raise metabolic rates, speed up fat oxidation and help people lose weight. Ten healthy men consumed either green tea extract, which contains 50 milligrams of caffeine, 50 milligrams of caffeine alone, or no caffeine at all. Only the group that consumed the green tea extract showed any increase in metabolic rate. Researchers suspect that the powerful antioxidants found in green tea, along with the caffeine, are responsible for its higher fat-burning effects. Dutasteride is extensively metabolized in humans. In vitro studies showed that dutasteride is metabolized by the CYP3A4 and CYP3A5 isoenzymes. Both of these isoen-zymes produced the 4′-hydroxydutasteride, 6-hydroxydutasteride, and the 6,4′-dihydroxydutasteride metabolites. In addition, the 15-hydroxydutasteride metabolite was formed by CYP3A4. Dutasteride is not metabolized in vitro by human cytochrome P450 isoenzymes CYP1A2, CYP2A6, CYP2B6, CYP2C8, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP2E1. In human serum following dosing to steady state, unchanged dutasteride, 3 major metabolites (4′-hydroxydutasteride, 1,2-dihydrodutasteride, and 6-hydroxydutasteride), and 2 minor metabolites (6,4′-dihydroxydutasteride and 15-hydroxydutasteride), as assessed by mass spectrometric response, have been detected. The absolute stereochemistry of the hydroxyl additions in the 6 and 15 positions is not known. In vitro, the 4′-hydroxydutasteride and 1,2-dihydrodutasteride metabolites
When thinking about weight loss, a factor to consider is your own individual metabolic rate. You will need to adopt a regular exercise program to help you burn fat and calories. You may even be thinking about taking a miracle pill easily available in the marketplace today to help curb your appetite and increase your [...]
While it's true your metabolism naturally slows down by about 2 to 5% per decade after age 40, there are plenty of things you can do to fight back. Exercise is key for immediate - and lasting - benefits. Engage in aerobic exercise 4 to 5 days a week: It's obvious that aerobic activities like running, brisk walking, swimming, and bike riding burn calories and increase metabolism while you're working out. But interestingly enough, several studies show that aerobic activities cause your metabolism to stay increased for a period of time after exercising. Work your muscles:Lifting weights and/or other strengthening activities like push-ups and crunches on a regular basis (at least 2 to 3 times each week) will boost your resting metabolism 24/7. That's because these activities build muscle, and muscle burns more calories than body fat. In fact, if you have more muscle, you burn more calories - even sitting still. When it comes to food, keep your metabolism revved with
Are you aware of the term “Metabolism”?
Metabolism is the process in which your body performs a chemical reaction to break the complex molecules or calories from the food you consume.
Metabolism produces energy to support your life. Usually every human body burns calories whether they work or not.
People believe that the rate [...]
Metabolism and Weight Loss
Metabolism is the process of burning calories. Metabolism burns it off fat and you burn calories no matter how many meals a day you eat. That’s why it is an essential part to weight loss because the higher metabolism you have the easier it is to lose weight.
Increasing metabolism is a fairly simple concept if done the right way. It is better to eat 6 or 7 meals a day rather than eating a couple big meals. Eventually you will lose weight gradually because you are giving your body time to burn off whatever you are eating rather than having to burn of a complete meal.
Basics Of Metabolism
Catabolism and Anabolism are the two main parts of metabolism. Catabolism breaks down food to give you energy. Catabolism is can also break down protein and use it for energy also.
Anabolism is where your body uses up its resources to create energy to be used. Your body uses this whenever you eat protein and later on that protein being used up during some kind of activity
Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination refer to the processes by which drugs enter the blood stream (absorption) and reach the brain (distribution), are broken down (metabolized and biotransformed) and leave the body (elimination). Drugs have different rates of absorption, depending on the route of administration. Drugs may be taken orally, e.g., alcohol; smoked, e.g., cigarettes; absorbed through the mucous membranes of the nose or mouth or other parts of the body, e.g., snorting cocaine; or injected, e.g., injectable heroin or cocaine. Drugs which are smoked or injected directly into the bloodstream will reach the brain more quickly than other routes of administration and therefore the person will experience the effects more rapidly. For example, cocaine that is injected into the bloodstream will produce a more rapid effect than cocaine that is snorted. However, the effect will also wear off more rapidly. Other factors may delay a substance reaching the brain; for exampl
Hey I just found this review and wanted to share, you can read the full text here on American Journal of Clinical NutritionAbstract:Low-carbohydrate nutrition and metabolismThe persistence of an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes suggests that new nutritional strategies are needed if the epidemic is to be overcome. A promising nutritional approach suggested by this thematic review is carbohydrate restriction. Recent studies show that, under conditions of carbohydrate restriction, fuel sources shift from glucose and fatty acids to fatty acids and ketones, and that ad libitum–fed carbohydrate-restricted diets lead to appetite reduction, weight loss, and improvement in surrogate markers of cardiovascular disease.

To lose fat effectively and efficiently, there is no better way to do it than to speed up your metabolism.
So, what exactly is metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions occurring in the body. These reactions include breaking down food and other substances to yield energy and synthesizing new substances which are vital to [...]
CM NEWS - Needling specific acupoints may help patients with dementia, a recently published study shows. The acupoint combo seems to increase cerebral glucose metabolism in the brain, as indicated by cerebral functional imaging.
The study has been published in the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science. Chinese researchers observed the effects of needling three acupoints - Baihui (百會, Hundred Convergences; GV 20), Shuigou (水溝, Water Trough; GV 26) and Shenmen (神門, Spirit Gate; HT 7) - and their effects on cerebral glucose metabolism in patients with vascular dementia.

There are a lot of people who would give a lot to increase their metabolism. Having a high level of metabolism enables one to maintain burn fat and lose weight fast with the least amount of activity. Metabolism is the rate by which the body produces and consumes energy and calories to support life.
There are several factors that affect the metabolism of a person, such as the amount of muscle tissue, the frequency of the meals one consumes, genetics, stress levels, personal diet and activity levels. Metabolism slows done due to the following: loss of muscle because of not enough physical activity, the tendency of the body to cannibalize its own tissue because there is not enough food energy to sustain it, and the decrease of physical activity that comes naturally with old age.
Here are several ways to fire up one’s metabolism:
1. Build up on lean, mean body mass. It is only natural that metabolism decreases along with age, but it is possible to counter the effects. The amount of
Lose Weight by Understanding Your Metabolism
We’ve all heard the simple diet formula for your metabolism:
“Take in fewer calories than you use and you’ll lose weight.” “Take in more and you’ll gain it.”
It’s a simplified view of a very complex subject, your metabolism. I’d like to take a moment and help you understand what your metabolism really is, and how it works.
There are three major components of your metabolism:
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
This is the energy expended when you are lying at complete rest, in the morning, after sleep. Think of it as being pretty close to just sitting there and watching television.
You’re probably thinking that BMR has to be a small piece of the puzzle, but it’s not. BMR is by far the largest piece of the metabolic pie, accounting for 60 to 70 percent of total calories expended each day.
How is that possible? While you’re sitting there, just a few of the many metabolic jobs occu
Exercise helps your to adapt your metabolism to the foods you are eating. New research shows that after a high-fat diet, a person who regularly exercises is able to "shift metabolic gears" and burn more fat.....
Unfortunately, a slowing metabolism is a fact of life as we get older. I could eat anything I wanted until about age 28, then my metabolism began to slow...and the pounds began to show. I dealt with it (sort of) until the advent of "Fast Food Dollar Menus"!!First one fast food chain, then aonther and another began to offer 99 cent items. It was so easy! And for a cheapskate like me, it allowed me to double or triple my intake of fat and calories for a measly three bucks a day!By age 37, my doctor ordered me to lose weight and reduce my fat intake. I was too heavy and bloated. And after a "scary visit" to a cardiologist, I turned things around and dropped 55 pounds in six months. I'll share details in a future post, but for now I want to share a fantastic website. If you've ever tried Weight Watchers, then you already know about Dotti's Weight Loss Zone (www.dwlz.com). Check out Dotti's wonderful site, then stop back here and comment!!
