Here is a good and balanced view of the controversy over mercury, vaccines and autism. Personally, I agree with his view in general. Also, his view as a research neuroscientist that even small amounts of toxins can cause the brain to not function well is right on. Another thing I think important is to spread out the vaccination schedule for the child. We used to vaccinate on a much slower schedule. The rise in autism appears to coincide with an acceleration in that schedule beginning around 1991. Challenging a childs immune system with so many vaccinations when their immune system (and most other systems) are not yet fully developed does not seem wise. Here is a more user friendly recommended schedule from a doctor Miller.

I never heard about fish being advised not to eat while pregnant and shouldn't be fed to babies. Well, not until I came to the US that I heard and read about seafood that has high level of mercury. Mercury can be toxic to young children especially babies because it could affect their brain development. However, with my people back home, babies that are not even a year old eat fish, fish that I think has a high level of mercury. I think I was fed with the same fish, but nothing bothered me, nor the kids at home. We eat fish on a daily basis there if we find nothing else to eat. It is weird because here it is advised that fish should be avoided as much as possible. It must be different here because the climate is cold, so maybe the bigger the fish the higher mercury level it has. Anyway, it is just a thought I wanted to share. If you are living in the western country, do you eat fish while pregnant and breastfeeding, and feed your children under 6 years of age fish anyway?

Thimerosal is a pharmaceutical compound that is nearly 50 percent mercury that was developed in 1927. It has been used as an antimicrobial agent in a range of products, but perhaps most notoriously as a preservative in vaccines.
However, there has been evidence dating as far back as the early 1930’s that thimerosal is both ineffective and hazardous. Nonetheless, thimerosal was not properly tested until the 1980’s, when the FDA recognized its toxicity and began to eliminate it from topical antiseptics. But while thimerosal was being eliminated from topicals, it was being used more and more in immunization for infants and pregnant women.
A new review of the safety and effectiveness of thimerosal in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health has concluded that the continued use of thimerosal represents nothing less than a medical crisis. Thimerosal continues to be used as part of mandated immunizations in the United States and globally.
Thimerosal is a pharmaceutical compound that is nearly 50 percent mercury that was developed in 1927. It has been used as an antimicrobial agent in a range of products, but perhaps most notoriously as a preservative in vaccines.
However, there has been evidence dating as far back as the early 1930’s that thimerosal is both ineffective and hazardous. Nonetheless, thimerosal was not properly tested until the 1980’s, when the FDA recognized its toxicity and began to eliminate it from topical antiseptics. But while thimerosal was being eliminated from topicals, it was being used more and more in immunization for infants and pregnant women.

Forest fires and other blazes in the United States likely release about 30 percent as much mercury as the nation's industrial sources, according to initial estimates in a new study by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Fires in Alaska, California, Oregon, Louisiana, and Florida emit particularly large quantities of the toxic metal, and the Southeast emits more than any other region, according to the research.
Mercury does not originate in fires. Instead, it comes from industrial and natural sources, often settling into soil and plant matter. Intense fires then release the mercury back into the atmosphere, where it poses a new danger because it can reach sensitive waterways and other areas.

It has been known for decades that fish is a wonderful low-fat source of high quality protein, and that eating it can decrease your risk of heart attack, stroke, obesity and hypertension. Lately, however, there have been concerns that eating too much fish can cause an accumulation of methylmercury, a widely recognized pollutant, in our body's tissues. A recent study revealed some surprising findings that may allow us to have our cake (seafood) and eat it too (less concern about mercury). First some background - the methylmercury that is found in seafood comes primarily from power plants that burn fossil fuels, like coal. Then after it rains or snows, the contaminant is brought down into our rivers, streams, oceans and lakes. Fish then absorb it from the food chain in these bodies of water.
Mercury is bad for you. You shouldn't touch it. If you breathe it in, that's even worse. So it's surprising that it's used in the new energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs. They're brighter and last longer than ordinary light bulbs, but the mercury means they're also potentially more harmful. It seems like this is evidence of a growing "half-measure" trend in the fight to combat energy inefficiency.There are a lot of steps we've been taking as a society to clean up our act, environmentally speaking. These include moving from gas-powered vehicles to gas-electric hybrids, gas-electric-hydrogen tribrids, and cars that run on ethanol. Many of these measures have faults of their own. We place so much emphasis on doing clean, environmentally-friendly work, and as of yet there is still no clear-cut technology that is pure and widely available. To save energy, we risk our own safety with things like mercury-infused light bulbs. Oh well. I guess we're just taking baby step
A controversial recommendation by a child-health coalition that pregnant women eat lots of fish and not worry about mercury contamination was not endorsed by many of the group's members, who are now distancing themselves from that position.

The European Union is currently debating the issue of whether or not to ban mercury fillings. "Amalgams," which contain 50 percent mercury, is still standard issue in many European countries.
