Merck & Co.'s (MRK) failure to win U.S. regulatory approval for a new cholesterol drug doesn't leave the drug maker down for the count, but it could make it harder to roll with the punches of generic competition in coming years. The Food and Drug Administration's rejection Monday of Cordaptive, just the latest setback for Merck this year, raises further concerns about how the drug giant will replace lost product sales in the coming years, and has led to a $9 billion reduction in the company's market value Tuesday. Those still bullish on the Whitehouse Station, N.J., company tout its respected research pipeline, new product sales and increasingly attractive dividend yield (thanks to the declining stock price). Merck has been testing a candidate HIV vaccine in two large phase II clinical trials; the STEP study in North and South America, the Caribbean and Australia, and a parallel study called Phambili in South Africa. STEP was a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II test-of-concept clinical trial. Started in December 2004, enrollment in the study was completed by March 2007 and more than 2,500 participants had received all three doses of vaccine or placebo. However, last month the drug trial was halted because the vaccine appeared to be increasing the risk of HIV infection among study participants. New York Sues Merck Over Vioxx, Seeking Reimbursement for Taxpayer Dollars
Seeking to recoup tens of millions spent by government-financed health programs on prescriptions for Vioxx, New York State and New York City joined yesterday in filing a lawsuit against Merck, the drug’s maker, which withdrew the painkiller from the market in 2004 because of dangerous side effects. The lawsuit, filed yesterday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, accuses Merck & Company of intentionally concealing the dangers of Vioxx, and therefore defrauding the state Medicaid program, which paid for the prescriptions. The drug was used to treat arthritis and migraines but led to a high risk of heart attacks and strokes. New York Times September 18, 2007

More Great News For Merck - People are Dying from Both Avandia and Actos

The bad Actos and Avandia news could also be good for the maker of Byetta - Amilyn (AMLN).This is serious stuff, actually. As a long time diabetic, I once took both Avandia and Actos and hated both the medications. I wonder if this is why I now take heart pills as well? Hmm, better jump into the class action lawsuit so I can collect my eventual settlement that will probably amount to no more than $1.65.

The drug effect: Merck’s high may be short lived
Merck has seen some tumultuous times over the past year but even though it finally looks like it may be out of the doghouse with Friday’s dropping of a Vioxx litigation, recent buzz about the upgrade in Merck from SELL to NEUTRAL and in Merrill Lynch’s case from SELL to BUY, should all be taken lightly. “Merck & Co. According to the company, the claim, which came in the case Ledbetter v. Merck Focuses on Traditional Chinese Medicine for Cancer Drugs
Merck recently announced that it will collaborate with Hong Kong-based Chi-Med, a pharmaceutical firm that focuses on researching, developing, manufacturing and selling pharmaceuticals, health supplements and other consumer health and personal care products derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine and botanical ingredients, to develop new cancer drugs. Traditional Chinese MedicineChinese herbal medicines have been used for centuries. Merck's partnership with Chi-Med was likely made with the intention of identifying the active ingredients in those medicines. Western pharmaceutical companies are increasingly outsourcing parts of drug discovery work due to the time and money - typically 7-10 years at a price of $800 million or more - required to find molecules to treat disease. The question is, when Merck patents the active ingredients in Chinese herbs, will it affect low cost, natural health practices? Hopefully, the answer will be no, since it’s speculated that any molecules id

Merck Calls The Ambulance Squad (MRK)
Things have gotten so bad at Merck that they are renting ambulances for victims of the company's Vioxx drug and MRK sharesholders. Merck disclosed yesterday that it was in a dispute over $5.58 billion in taxes it may owe the US and Canada. Almost any child who reads a newspaper knows that Merck's Vioxx painkiller may cause heart problems and that the company is involved in countless suits that could cost it billions of dollars in damages. And now the taxman cometh. Merck has $6.2 billion in cash on its balance sheet, so, if it had to pay these taxes, it would not have a great deal left to cover Vioxx judgments, although future earnings could generate more cash. It is hard to figure out how the tax number could get so high. Merck's revenues are about $22 billion, so it is a pretty big bill. Merck's shares have recovered from the Vioxx shock. Its stock has recovered from a 52-week low of $27.99 to $45.90, near its high for the period. In 2003, the stock traded at $63. The tax issue i

Merck Paying $1B for Sirna, More Deals Likely
From Peridot Capitalist Pharmaceutical giant Merck (MRK) is clearly looking for ways to boost growth. It's no secret that big pharma companies face increasing competition from generic drugs and pressure to keep rising healthcare costs in check. Small to mid size acquisitions of biotechnology companies are a solid way for companies like Merck, Pfizer (PFE), and Glaxo SmithKline (GSK) to strengthen their product pipelines. On Monday we learned that Merck is paying more than $1 billion for Sirna Therapeutics (RNAI). It's is quite possible that they overpaid. After all, MRK is paying $13 per share in cash, a premium of more than 100 percent over Monday's closing price. However, overpaying by a couple hundred million dollars isn't a big deal for a company the size of Merck if several of Sirna's products eventually reach the market. There is no doubt that deals like this one will continue. I am generally leery of trying to predict which firms will get taken out next. So, I would suggest
