1955 Mercedes 300 SLAppropriately nicknamed the "Gullwing", the 300 SL was an instant icon when it debuted in 1954. DaimlerChrysler has announced plans to launch a gasoline-electric hybrid for the 2008 model year. According to DaimlerChrysler Board Member Dr. Thomas Weber, the company will commercialize an S-class mild hybrid; further mild-hybrid models are in development for subsequent years. Mild hybrid engines, like the one in use in Honda's Accord hybrid, provide electric-powered assistance to the gasoline engine; full hybrids, like Toyota's Prius, alternate between their gasoline or electric motors depending on driving conditions.DaimlerChrysler introduced both gasoline and diesel Mercedes mild-hybrid concept cars based on the S-Class at last year’s Frankfurt auto show. German based tuner ART presented a modified version of the heavyweight from Mercedes, the GL. The ART engine performance for CDI versions offers electronic performance optimization of the motor control. It squeezes around another 20% of speed out of those already powerful series engines. Performance optimization will be available soon for the V6 and V8 petrol engines. The car is equipped with ART BiXENON Headlamp System NERO, a Triple Beam Lamp Set integrated in the front spoiler with additional xenon high beam lamps, LED technology and fog lamps boosts the charisma of the vehicle’s front while providing the driver with that extra passive safety. The rear apron has integrated diffusor and there are four polished chrome-plated 80mm tailpipes of the ART sports exhaust system. I was always a Mercedes Benz fan but I didn’t particularly like the 95-2000 models, and only recently they’ve made nice looking cars by my standards. The best accomplishment in the past few years is the CLS, which apparently sells very well, so that Mercedes decided to borrow some of its distinctive feature for the 2009 SL-Class model.
