About 4 percent of children in Western countries experience the death of a parent, according to background information in the article. Parents who have psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders and substance abuse, are more likely to die from suicide, accidents and heart disease. The same psychiatric factors that increase parents' risk of sudden death also predispose their children to developing similar mental health problems. Nadine M. Due to the fact that all these factors are natural many women simply put up with the symptoms and other discomforts during these stages. However, all natural occurrences in a woman's natural course of life have different influences on her body such as an hormonal imbalance, which can lead to depression at times. Women always try and put a strong front, but women's mental health is fragile and can easily be disturbed should any of the natural factors go out of hand. Between Facts and Myth Many women even today simply put up with many daily discomforts because they were told this is a natural thing and they have to deal with

In its very nature, every case is highly sensitive and the patient-client relationship depends on commitment, trust and knowledge between the triumvirate parties involved. Uncertainties raise mental health law issues. Since 1983 when the mental health Act came into existence, the necessity of trained mental health lawyers have needed a specialized module. They operate at fundamental level and at the law firm of Duncan & Lewis the confidence rate and successful cases are higher. In UK nearly one in four people suffer from mental health problems as reported by the BBC recently. Most individuals also find it difficult to tell their family doctors that they have a mental health problem. Mental Health Vacation Recap
The other night I had to pull away from the computer and handwrite my ramblings on a sheet of paper. For the last couple of days, everytime I log in my blog I had this overwhelming thought of "I have so much to blog about, I don not know where to start". Not good isn't it? Blogging is supposed to help me de-stress, not stress me out. And so I did the right thing of handwriting my ramblings. It helped. And now, I am ready to post some of those ramblings .. to recap my 1 week mental health vacation. Two nights ago, I was lamenting the fact that I only have 2 more days of, then I have to go back to work on Thursday. I knew I shouldn't feel that way, and that I should be thankful I had a week off. But I couldn't help it. When I thought about the things that I still need to (planned to) accomplish, I knew 2 days are not enough (and one of those days my kids are off from school). And so to help myself have a better attitude (to look at the glass half full instead of half empty), i decide

      Mental Health Insurance
Despite public awareness campaigns highlighting the issues facing people with mental health problems and the fact that no one is immune to developing a mental illness, people with mental health problems are still facing unfair discrimination, prejudice and stigma every day of their lives, not just from members of the public but also from businesses, banks, employers and even when it comes to taking out an insurance policy. The truth is, any one of us can develop a mental illness, regardless of our age, gender, location, occupation or social status. Actually, the statistics show that at least one in four of us will experience some kind of mental health problem in the space of any one year. Mental health problems can be hugely diverse in nature and can range from mild cases of depression and anxiety to more serious cases of bipolar depression and schizophrenia with the types of symptoms and the degree of intensity of these symptoms varying from person to person. However, there are problem

Convoluted Plans / Mental Health Systems
We had our big meeting today with all the Drs. and staff concerning Ebony. The outcome is that they all realize that she is a very mentally ill child. One of the toughest cases they have seen and dealt with in a long time. In fact they cannot fathom how we ever were able to care for her so long at home. They now understand our reasoning that surely if group home facilities for the mentally ill have turned her down because she is too dangerous than surely the cannot release her or force us into taking her home. Since her funding has run out for mental health residential care they have come up with another convoluted plan that gives us all an additional 30 days to come up with something. The plan they came up with is a strange one indeed and to show you just how dangerous my daughter can be and how serious they take it , they plan to sedate her just to carry it out. Tomorrow morning they are going to release her however , they then are going to immediately Baker Act her back into t

      Mental Health System
Maneuvering our way through the mental health system with our daughter Ebony has not been easy. One would think that after five years of doing so we would know all the ins and outs but we are running out of options and her mental health continues to deteriorate. She is an on going danger to herself and others but has maxed out of the allotted time to keep her in a locked facility. Although we have clearly stated that we are not in agreement with her moving to a group facility do to that reason alone we were forced to try to make arrangements which we did. Today she was scheduled to visit such a facility. They were to do the transporting do to the fact that on her last home visit she attempted to kill us. It never took place because she began physically attacking staff early this morning and threatened to kill them all during transport. Funny...they took it seriously enough that they refused to transport yet they tell us , Ah...she's only trying to get a reaction. Perhaps now

The Age of Insanity: Modernity and Mental Health
Author: John F. Schumaker Paperback: 240 pagesPublisher: Praeger PublishersLanguage: EnglishISBN: 0275970523(R)The often misunderstood "modern person syndrome" is a disorder linked to the conditions of living in our contemporary society. The author argues that the conditions of modernity have introduced new processes, forces, and cultural motivations that have major implications for all aspects of mental health and social well being. While modernity offers unprecedented opportunities for personal enhancement and creative expression, there is mounting evidence of a mental health crisis that demands the immediate attention of mental health professionals. In order to address the new challenges that have arisen under conditions of modernity, mental health professionals must rethink fundamental assumptions about the relationship between society and mental health, as well as the impact of modern social concerns upon individual behavior and psychological well being. Overview of Mental Health & Mental Illness
Although a largely "invisible" condition not easily discernible at a glance for most, mental illness is, indeed, a disease every bit as real as cancer or diabetes and if it is severe and/or protracted enough, it requires medical intervention to be cured or managed. There's an unfortunate stigma that if you suffer from a more "common" illness such as depression or anxiety disorder, especially, you should be ashamed of it and should hide it or should "buck up and just get over it already." Yet, just as you wouldn't think you should simply get over leukemia by yourself and absolutely need medical treatment for your best chances at recovery from it, so, too, do cases of more severe and protracted mental illness such as clinical depression, for example. Even so-called "mild" cases of mental illness, such as acute but temporary depression or a mild case anxiety, if protracted, can benefit from at least temporary intervention, such as a brief

      Mental Health Parity?
A groundbreaking bill is working its way through the US House of Representatives: the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007.This bill, should it become law, would require insurance plans to treat medical claims and mental health claims exactly the same way. That is to say there would be no more limits on how many times you could see your therapist in a year. The co-pay would also be the same as you would pay to see a regular doctor or perhaps a specialist. Most of the people who read this blog know how important this legislation is. I urge EVERYONE to write both of their US Senators and their Congressional Representative to let them know just how important you think it is. With a Democratic majority in both houses it'll eventually get through, but the more people who write, the less likely the for-profit insurance companies will be to succeed in their efforts to water it down. Writing will also speed passage of the bill.Unfortunately, only a couple of media

Mental Health; Smoke Free or Not ???
Since we were first informed about Britain going smoke free we have wondered what will happen with our patients.I work in a medium secure hospital, each door has a lock and our patients live under strict restrictions governed by not only the mental health act but in some cases by the Ministry of Justice (the home office) as well. Most if not all of our patients are there long term, I'm not talking about more than just six months, I'm talking longer than a year and normally longer. The locks and imposed restrictions mean that our patients at times get a minimum of 15 minutes of fresh air out in the court yard a day. At times they only get that because it's law, the ward can be so busy and short staffed that finding an appropriate moment to take them out can be hard. This post has been prompted by reading an old article in the British Medical Journal* written in 2006 that states:Exemption from the Health Act will exclude mental health patients from mainstream health improvement strateg

Dual Diagnosis Treatment and Mental Health
For most patients who need dual diagnosis treatment, the public sector is the source of mental health care. There are six types of generic ambulatory mental health treatments provided to outpatient clients in the public sector: medication services, talk therapies, consumer advocacy and referral, crisis interventions, education and training, and psychosocial services. Patients with dual disorders often mix medication with alcohol and drugs. The dual diagnosis treatment that have been effective with dual diagnosis patients have been medication services, talk therapies and psychosocial services. Medication services are widely used in the public sector. Medication reduces psychiatric symptoms, keeps patients out of the hospital, and may even reduce substance abuse. However, medication effects are not permanent, especially for dually diagnosed patients. These patients will often resume substance abuse to counteract side effects of psychiatric medications. They also are more likely to disc

      Mental Health and Bloggity Update
Guess what? Today, Monday the 30th, I took a Mental Health Day Off to de-stress. I was supposed to do this last week Wednesday but work was busy and I didn't think it was a good thing to do then. But today I know I really have to or else I won't be a "nice person" to be around.Although I am typing up this post today (Monday night), I won't upload it until Tuesday because today I decided to participate in One Day Blog Silence. If you're a daily visitor, you'll notice that there's a new post added before the One Day Blog silence post. It didn't appear on Monday. I typed it up on Sunday night to post it the next day, but I was reminded that I needed to be blog silent today so I am uploading it tomorrow (which is today when you read this:)So..... good news: I finally accomplished Urgent/Important Task #5! Sorry, I can't list all the task here because some involves my family. The important thing is I've accomplished it! The catch is now there's a nother 5 new urgent/importa

      Mental Health Day
I am thinking of taking a day off from work. Reason? Mental health. Shhhh...don't tell my husband I am taking a day off from work. I just need sometime for myself. I just need to de-stress. Maybe I'd take that "day off" on Wednesday because I really need to be in the office today and tomorrow. I hope Wednesday is not too late. Maybe I should do it on Tuesday. But I really can't do it today. It's 4:30 AM now. I woke up at 3:00 AM and can't go back to sleep. I'm gonna be one tired sleepy working mom today. It's like having an infant who wouldn't sleep through the night - I'm sleep deprived. And you know how a sleep deprived person can be sometimes. Yes, cranky!I must admit, I am using my blog as an escape and de-stress chamber. I am spending way too much time blogging and reading blogs. Blog hopping and reading other peoples' blog is my meager attempt to put my thoughts in perspective. For example, when I am feeling overwhelmed with my domestic insecurities, I go to Heather's b

The Cho Seung-Hui Manifesto: News, lurid voyeurism or a mental health wake-up call?
Boston Herald columnist Peter Gelzinis titled his April 20th article  Carnage a daily problem: Violence plagues us all. He couldn’t have found a more fitting title for an issue that threatens to become lost in the rush to create a macabre celebrity of Cho Seung-Hui. Said Gelzinis, quoting Ulyen Coleman, the director of Boston’s Regional Resource Center, “The two things that struck me about (Cho’s) picture,” Coleman said, “was the access to guns, especially sophisticated weapons like that. And the second was how those weapons always seem to find their way into the hands of kids with serious mental issues.” Indeed. I’m sure to be verbally flogged for suggesting so, but I do believe that someone mentally ill and determined to wreak havoc in the world as justification for whatever reality their illness allows them to create, will find the means to do so. We live in a world where even gun control can’t prevent that. Reports of individuals being able to obtain

Since returning from Maternity Leave I've been running off my feet on a daily basis. Before you get your panties in a knot, this is not a pitty post. I work for a living, that's my life, I accept it. But dammit, it's trying on good days.Today is a day for me; a mental health day; though one day will not change my mental state, it's a start. Gawd knows, one day is not enough; more like a padded cell and a frontal lobotomy to fix this bitch.Things have slowed at work as I am in the midst of changing positions and I decided that today, I would stay home. Alone. Do what I want for a change. And so far, I haven't done a damn thing. Sweet and utter bliss I tell you.Carter and I got up at normal time, I shipped him off to daycare, and here I sit. I've taken a leisurely shower, taken time to apply my make-up, straightened my hair... all to sit here and blog. Do I give a damn? Nope. I haven't washed any dishes, I haven't cleaned anything.
