Menomena has been around for a few years and have a couple of solid albums under their belt. I have been a fan for a long time and I know that I say this a lot, but if you haven’t given these guys a chance you really need to. They are pure gold!
Menomena [...]
As the Muppet themed reference in their name suggests, Portland, Oregon’s Menomena have always had a smiley face at the core of their computer derived experimentalism. Marrying odd rhythmic loops to Zappa-esque vocal whimsies has long been their stock in trade. The ‘Wet and Rusting’ EP offers a few more samples of their deliciously off-the-wall brew, including three versions of the title track–the album version of which appears on their album ‘Friend and Foe’. No serious excursions from familiar ground here (although all Menomena territory tends to be unfamiliar by virtue of the band’s very nature), but completist fans will find much to enjoy.

This little Fun-Blame Monster sure came outta nowhere, didn't it? I mean, we have pitchfork throwing up a "featured review" one moment, followed by a chorus of indie kids and online mags screaming "hell ya!" and then it's forgotten in time for the year-end best-of lists... It came and went so fast that I'd mostly forgotten about it until I randomly came upon a used copy at the local record shop. The crude dragon drawing on the front insisted that I give it a sample listen, and, rolling my eyes, I grudgingly obliged. Now about this local record store, I have to give them credit that they even have listening stations for the used c.d.s. Still, they make it pretty clear that they don't want you there too long by making it very uncomfortable- you stand in a little booth with nothing to lean on or sit on. I wasn't planning on being there too long- only 30 secs a song, 9 songs, a quick little five minutes, right? I pressed play...and stood there for the whole 45 minute runtime. Man, it
Menomena July 22nd, McMenamens Edgefield
Word on the street is that Menomena made a bunch of new fans after opening for the Decemberists last Saturday at McMenamins Edgefield. The band was in top form after their recent return from an extensive U.S. and European tour. Next stop is the Bumbershoot festival on September 1st. The trio will be on the Sound Transit stage, 6 -7pm, all ages.
"Wet and Rusting" is one of those tracks that's been out for a while, but that you don't really start to appreciate until later, for whatever reason. Leaving it on the back burner any longer, however, would be a serious crime. Between the vocal distortions, delicate piano, acoustic guitar, and occasional xylophone hit, there's lots to keep track of in this song. It's well worth it though; they payoff is really quite epic. You can find this track on both the Wet and Rusting EP and their latest LP Friend and Foe (really cool cover art).Check out the awesome video too, but listen to the song without video accompaniment first. It'll make it more memorable."Wet and Rusting" - MenomenaEDIT: Wow, this song is even more amazing live. You guys have to see this:Menomena: Official SiteMenomena: Myspace
While McMenamins Edgefield has not officially added Menomena to their web site, Menomena’s MySpace page indicates that they will be sharing the bill with the Decemberists on July 22nd.
Menomena has had an amazing year since the release of their new CD friend and foe. The band was in New York earlier this month and perfomed in Jaun’s Basement for Plum TV in Brooklyn, NY.
We’re on day three now and it’s hard to keep up with the blog updates while nursing hangovers and rushing out to hit the next batch of parties. My head hurts. I might be deaf in at least one ear.
Day one was tremendous. We bumped into VietNam on the street for a brief introduction, but unfortunately didn’t have the camera ready. We headed over to La Zona Rosa in the evening to check out Elvis Perkins and The Cold War Kids. We weren’t expecting to see Pete Townshend stroll on stage for an acoustic set, but that’s what we got. What a great surprise.
My digital camera is out of batteries, so here are the pics I was able to salvage before it took a dump. We’ll make sure to get the rest up tomorrow and next week.
