I cannot say that I have ever been a huge fan of husband and wife team that made up the band, The Mendoza Line. I have been a admirer of their work and an occasional fan (especially of the 2003 album, Full Of Light and Full Of Fire,) through the years. So it is incredibly bittersweet to get the news that although they have a new double disc album on the way, it will more than likely be their last as the original incarnation of The Mendoza Line, as Tim Bracy and Shanon McArdle’s marriage is coming to an end.
Tim will continue on with the band, but Shannon will pursue other endevours. The new album is a double disc, as mentioned. The first disc being a “mini album” made up of eight new songs, the most notable featuring Okkervil River’s Will Sheff guesting on “Aspect Of An Old Maid.” The second disc, titled, Final Reflections Of The Legendary Malcontent is a giant melting pot of music. Cerro Aconcagua, at 6959 metres tall the highest mountain in Argentina and South America (and also in the world outside the Himalayas) was what we’d come to Mendoza to see. I’ve seen large mountains and volcanoes before, in Peru and the northwest of Argentina, where there are 5000 metre and 6000 metre tall mountains and volcanoes that rise up in solitude from the altiplano. I remember the mountain Nevado del Cachi (6380m) which I could see from another village 150 kilometres away, and even from that distance it still seemed huge.The difference with Aconcagua is that it’s surrounded by other, nearly as tall mountains, and can’t be seen until you’re very close, and even then framed by other mountains. To get there, we caught the bus from Mendoza to Uspallata, where we stayed for two nights. Uspallata is a small town high in the mountains near Mendoza. The views of the Andes on the journey are spectacular. This is a desert environment and the mountains are tall, jagged and bare.
Last Tuesday we began our trip to the north of Argentina and Bolivia. Although we started by going not north but west to Mendoza. Mendoza is famous for it’s wine, clean streets, dry desert climate and for it’s proximity to Aconcagua, South America’s tallest mountain at nearly 7000 metres.We caught the overnight bus from La Plata, and arrived about 11am in the city of Mendoza. Our first day was for exploring the city and on the second we caught the bus to Maipú, a nearby town and the location of several bodegas (wineries). Maipú is a small, quiet town, and it was a beautiful sunny, slightly cool day, perfect for sightseeing. We started at San Felipa (“La Rural”) in Montecaseros, a traditional bodega which also housed the Museo del Vino (Wine Museum). There are free tours around the museum and the guide spoke in both Spanish and English. It was fascinating to see some of the old machinery and barrels from the past. Thought I would try this Chardonnay from Mendoza when I found it one the 5 cent sale at BevMo (buy on bottle for full price and get the second for 5 cents).This wine has a medium light, clear, straw color in the glass. On the nose, creamy, ripe, green apple with lemony citrus and a hint of buttery oak. On the palate the apple is more of the tart character with citrus and round, creamy mouth feel and medium acidity.This wine was fermented in new French oak for 8 months and you can certainly detect it both in the nose and on the palate. It is however still a relatively refreshing chardonnay with not to heavy creaminess.I got his at BevMo for $ 14.99, with bottle number two for only 5 cents, so that means that I only paid $7 per bottle. This wine is by no means going to "break any scoring records" but it is a solid, nice chardonnay for a good price. Marina Mendoza Stripping By The Pool
I know some of you guys are going to hate me but here it’s been mid-eighties. I know a lot of the country is getting hit by snow and ice storms and I feel bad about posting video clips of me by the pool, but I did it anyways. It was a little cloudy, but way too nice of day to be inside when my photographer came by do a photo shoot with me the other afternoon. Out by the pool it’s semi-private but I’ll bet if some of my neighbors looked they could definitely see me doing this naughty strip tease.
