The world lost an extraordinary person when friend and collector Danton Burroughs recently and unexpectedly passed away at his home in Tarzana, California. The grandson of the man who wrote Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Dan was very active in many communities, including the marble community. A nice and gentle man whom I'm proud to have called a friend, I shed many tears in saying goodbye to him. May God bless you Dan!!Unfortunately this website is relatively new so I was only able to take a few photos of Dan's world-class marble collection, but to see those photos, click on the "Danton Burroughs Collection" label below.Once again, may God bless you Dan!!
Just yesterday, I noted that I felt it was a shame there is no memorial yet at Ground Zero in Manhattan. Today, the AP reports families of the victims of Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pa., are equally as annoyed that there isn't yet a memorial there -- and that there's been bickering over its design. Click here for the story.

Presidential Candidate and U.S. Sen John McCain, R-Ariz., has finally and seriously caught my attention with a call for congress to suspend the nation's 18.4¢-per-gallon gas tax between Memorial Day and Labor Day. McCain also called on the government to quit adding more fuel to the strategic petroleum reserve. Combined, the nation could see a serious drop in the price of a gallon of gas.I've been waiting months to hear a candidate talk about gas prices in a serious manner, and McCain's plan — albeit the only plan — looks like it could have an incredibly positive impact on gas prices. And this, folks, is good news. Here's the story, courtesy of MSNBC. Let's see if it happens. I am sure most of us hope it will.

Today, 7 April, is being celebrated as Chakri Memorial Day in Thailand, a public holiday which marks the founding of the present Chakri Dynasty by Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great, also known as Phutthayotfa and posthumously named Rama I.The name Chakri (จักรี) comes from the title Chao Pharaya Chakri, given to Rama I while he was a general in Taksin’s army. This title was held by the greatest warlords of the Ayuthaya Kingdom and was meant to reflect the prowess of the holder on the battlefield.Rama I ascended to the throne on 6 April 1782 and ruled the Kingdom of Siam for twenty-eight years. During his reign, Phutthayotfa consolidated the Kingdom in such a way that here was no further fear of invasion from enemies. King Rama I has been praised as an accomplished states

They have asked me if I could provide design sketches for a small area where they could put additional room or area for various events but mostly will be used for memorial gatherings. The proposed additional structure for memorial gathering will have its own bedroom, toilet and bath, kitchen and general area. The overall design is simple as not to overpower the existing structures (church and multi-purpose) yet welcoming and warmth design. I was awoken in the middle of the night with nightmares of the little rabbit that passed away before my eyes. In my dreams he was chasing me with red-glowing eyes, waving a hoe and repeating in an elf-like voice "You murdered me! You will pay!" I was sweating and my heart was racing. I thought about digging up the little corpse and taking it somewhere more beautiful, like a park but I didn't know how I'd be able to dig a hole in a public park in broad daylight and decided I'd look pretty-suspicious carrying around the Tide box. I was going to send some money to a local rabbit charity but somehow it seemed inadequate. I finally decided that a memorial is what this furry little creature deserved. I drove into Newport Beach at 8:00 a.m. to go to "Garden Statuaries". There was a

I like to call it the 'Trevor Messersmith Memorial Wading Pool'."Naturally, I jog around it every morning...pondering my multiple lives as an American style icon...as spouse to an assassinated President...as a kept man on a Greek isle...wandering to and fro in huge sunglasses and linen kaftans...trying to avoid Maria Callas's attempts on my lif

EulogiesThe President of Southbourne Literary Society who introduced me and gave the vote of thanks was Mr Bonsor who was at LAMDA with my public speaking tutor Angela Brennan and delivered a superb eulogy at her memorial service. Although this was back in February 2000, I remember it very well and as I have noticed that a number of readers are discovering this blog and website while searching the net for guidance for speaking at funerals, I thought I would mention a few of the elements which made that speech so appropriate. There must have been at least 100 people in the church and Mr Bonsor told us about how Angela was the best student at poetry readings when he studied with her. Anyone who had her as their teacher would have noticed how, even in her 60s, poetry was still important to her, both in the lessons she taught and in performances she still gave locally until her failing health meant she had to give up. By contrast, he then went on to mention some of Angela's early professio

Memorial superintendent admits giant crescent still present in memorial design
No comment from the Park Service yet on Congressman Tancredo’s request for a new Flight 93 Memorial. We did a little better with last week’s blogburst letters. Some emailers got a response from Memorial Project Superintendent Joanne Hanley, answering Mr. Tancredo’s contention that the original giant crescent is still present in the redesign. Interestingly, her description of the redesign actually admits that the giant crescent IS still present, both geometrically and thematically.
In 2005, architect Paul Murdoch explained his original Crescent of Embrace design in terms of the flight path: as the hijacked airliner came over the ridgeline above the crash site, its flight path symbolically broke the circle, turning it into a giant crescent. In the original design, the broken off part of the circle was removed entirely:
