Extracellular Membrane Vesicles in Bacteria: Taking Quorum Sensing in New Directions
Bacterial quorum sensing is not a new phenomenon by any means. Although the term has only recently come into the existence, the concept has been around for decades. In 1964,Tomasz and Hotchkiss, out of Rockefeller, demonstrated the presence of a macromolecule responsible for induction of competence in pneumococcus when the cells reached a specific growth point in mid to late log phase. This concept

      What is a Membrane Switch
Membrane Switch is not a term that is heard often, but it is something that a lot of people see on a daily basis. Membranes switch panels and overlays are found on keyboards, remote controls, and security alarm keypads. They provide simple labels to give directions to the users about the function of each button. Typical membrane switches incorporates the following layered components : Graphic p

[FRANCE] Postdoc in Membrane Traffic in C elegans
A two-year post-doc position is available in our C. elegans group in Rennes, France. Our lab focuses on the physiological role of membrane traffic during development. In particular, we examine the function of the AP-1 adaptor complex which is involved in several routes of post-Golgi trafficking and in epithelial cell polarity. The developmental and cellular functions of this complex are investigat

      Water Filtration via Membrane Technology
Purification or Filtration by Membrane technology is primarily used in commercial and industrial applications. There are 4 membrane processes that operate by applying water pressure to a membrane; ie. Reverse Osmosis :Microfiltration (MF) is a process where water is forced under pressure through a porous membrane. Membranes with a pore size of 0.45 Microns are normally used. This size is relatively large compared with the other membrane filtration processes. This process has not been generally applicable to drinking water treatment because it either does not remove substances that require removal from potable water, or the problem substances can be removed more economically using other processes. The primary use of MF is by industries to remove very fine particles from process water, as in

Microtubules at the Membrane in Apoptosis
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is an evolutionarily conserved and neatly orchestrated process important for tissue remodeling and safe elimination of severely damaged cells. Conducted by a caspase-mediated proteolytic cascade, the cell death program results in a series of cellular changes distinct from cellular necrosis. And one of the critical aspects that distinguish apoptosis from necrosis is that intracellular components of apoptotic cells are isolated, preventing membrane permeability and release of inflammatory molecules. Just how do dying cells keep themselves from spilling out their materials into the surrounding tissues? And what role do the cytoskeleton components have in this process? Those are the questions that José Sánchez-Alcázar and colleagues1 asked in a paper in July’s issue of the journal Apoptosis. (more…)
