I went away for two weeks on vacation. I put my trust in our new Media center set up to make sure that all of our shows were recorded. While we were gone the Internet connection at the house went down. This happened during the last part of the vacation. The media guide was not able to update and the media center did not 'know' that New Amsterdam needed to be recorded on Tuesday AND Thursday last week. So I have episode #1 and #3. I also missed out on one episode of Transformers Animated. And I can't find either of these shows online by any legal means. Not yet at least. I am hoping to be able to find them soon. I really need some low vision aids because I continue to miss the very fine print with my tech.

We love using the old computer as a media center. It has been awesome. The most fun thing we have done with it lately is to run the webcam so we can talk to our friends in South Dakota. But beyond that we also set the Picture in Picture on the computer to run the webcam on the bottom right side of the screen and we played Guitar Hero 3 with our friends through the wi-fi connection on the Wii. The one thing we need to work on is the moments when we got some major feedback while playing, other than that it worked like a charm. Also I love that we can load up all our CDs and record our favorite shows without having to think about it. So much fun.

Omaura TT Media Center PC concept This "TT' concept is a Media Center PC by Omaura North America. It is built to stand nearby a flat TV and I bet that it looks really good if the TV is fixed to the wall. The idea is really nice and we have yet to see it fully implemented, but it seems like it would work very well. And don't let the photo fool you into thinking that it is big: it's not. By eyeballing it, I guess that it would be roughly as wide as a 30' Dell display, for half the height. Perché non estendere queste belle capacità anche a programmi come “Media Center” e “Movie Maker” inclusi in diverse versioni del sistema operativo di casa Microsoft?
E’ davvero facile ed il risultato ed ottimo, provare per credere! Basta infatti (una volta installati i codec sopra citati) andare in “start” > “esegui…” (se avete Vista basterà scrivere nella barra di ricerca veloce) digitare “regedit” e dare l’invio, per poi recarsi nella chiave “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT”.
A questo punto, andiamo passo passo sulle voci relative ad ogni estensione di file che vogliamo rendere visibile in Windows Media Center e modificabile in Movie Maker. Ad esempio, rendiamo visibile/modificabile il formato flv tipico dei video su YouTube (e simili), andando in “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.flv”,

Tuesday saw the release of the June 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista on Windows Update. Steven Bink highlights the update and Ian Dixon also talks about the update as well on his blog.
The June 2007 Cumulative Update resolves several issues in Windows Media Center including a update to the Digital Cable Card component in Media Center that improves the interaction between the CableCARD, digital cable tuner, and Media Center.
With this update programs for enabling the use of Windows Media Extenders (such as the Xbox 360) have been updated. You may need to update your third party firewall to take into account the changes to these programs and enable access through the firewall to your Windows Media Extender. For example, I use Windows Live OneCare to protect my PC I use for Media Center. In Windows Live OneCare's Firewall Advanced Settings, you will notice it lists programs by name and version.

Have you tried the built in Windows Media Center in Vista? This is a series review - part 2 on how you can manage your Photos using Picture Library.
The Picture Library is found within the Pictures + Videos option in Windows Media Center. Once you access this area you will be able to navigate your folders and view thumbnail images in a easy to use horizontal listing. One thing I found useful is the Photo touch-up functionality. Despite the limited features for editing a digital photo, the basics are there allowing you to ready your pictures for printing, sharing, creating slide shows or simpling burning them CD/DVD for example. Options are readily available and intuitive to use however I would have like to see further customization features to arrange things differently on the screen.

My first impression is, this is no iTunes, this is not meant to be a Adobe Photoshop and it is definitely not a DivX player. So what is this then you ask? Well let me start with some observations I had when I first looked at it.

Single spot to perform tasks such as DVD burn, create a slide show, edit a photo.
Ability to access online media (videos) such as TV, Movies and latest News
Widescreen support (for those who can afford a wide screen monitor - not me)
