I just have a little while before I have to go get dressed so that I can take the dog to Markleville to the Dog Groomer to have his fleas abolished (and possibly all of his hair shaved). But . . . I was thinking about "coping mechanisms." I found myself perturbed by the mentioning of the words and the "lack there of" again this morning. "I can't deal with this, Rachel."I've heard the claim ofte

I've always wondered why line managers prefer to appreciate or rebuke their reportees in private. In organizations and countries where I have worked, I found it peculiar that some line managers preferred to say nice things in public, but harsher ones in private, perhaps in a meeting room. I dislike this practice of discriminating between positive and negative feedback and since most people in mode
Corporate Trigger MechanismsBy: Murad AliThe effective functioning of a modern company requires proper IT services that can integrate the various complicated software programs and services into something that is useful for managers. Managers want the ability to run reports at the touch of a finger without having to spend large amounts of time attempting to extract information.The IT department has

Single-action (SA) handguns have a trigger whose sole function is to drop a pre-cocked hammer to discharge a cartridge. For revolvers, the popular Colt Peacemaker of Old West fame is typically thought of. Its hammer must be manually cocked for each shot. For auto-loading pistols the Colt 1911 or Browning Hi-Power are typical examples. They must be cocked for the first shot, but subsequent shots ar
Today I was going through Book On Line while researching something, I come across one interesting small article about two mechanisms to ensure integrity and consistency of databases - 1) Locking 2) Row Versioning

Concluding our discussion of the four dispute resolution options under IDEA, this week we will continue to examine the due process hearing and the major changes in the hearing process under the 2004 reauthorization and the new federal regulations. Last week we examined the changes to the "stay put" provision and procedural violations. This week we will deal with changes concerning NCLB-type issues and miscellaneous hearing issues.NCLB-type IssuesIDEA ’04 imposes new NCLB-type qualifications for special education teachers as well as related services personnel and paraprofessionals. Section 612(a)(14)(B)&(C). However, IDEA also provides that no due process hearing or court action may be filed because of failure to provide highly qualified personnel, although a parent may file a state c
Three papers from UC Davis have appeared on the PLoS journals in the past few days that bring together population genetics and genomic sequencing to address questions of importance to evolutionary biology. Their discussions of divergence in coding versus non-coding, and adaptive versus neutral shifts, are what caught my eye. Collectively, they’re three very densely packed studies, providing a fountain of info that only bioinformatics can process. (more…)
The reservoirs of the earliest fountain pens were mostly filled by eyedropper. This was a relatively awkward and messy process: consequently very few eyedropper-filling pens are made today. However, the absence of complicated mechanisms meant that an eyedropper-filler could hold much more ink than could a self-filling pen of comparable size.

This is the fourth in a series of five articles. In order to disrupt terrorist financing, there must be a more comprehensive understanding of the multi-dimensional elements involved in the funding process. The first article in this series provided an overview of four components that must be included in training in order to establish a framework for understanding the complexity of terrorist financing. Each of the subsequent articles focuses on one of the four components, which include: 1. Types of...(read more)
The first step in the development of colon cancer is the formation of benign tumours, called adenomas, in the intestine. Over time, these tumours may progress to produce colon cancer if they undergo a series of mutations and genetic alterations.
Researchers at IRB Barcelona under the direction of Eduard Batlle, ICREA researcher and head of IRB Barcelona’s Oncology Programme, have discovered a new mechanism by which the benign tumour cells receive instructions to grow in confined compartments, and no to invade other areas of the tissue. The description of this new tumour suppression mechanism is reported in the scientific journal Nature Genetics.
The scientists observed that adenomatous tumour cells have special surface receptors, called EphB2 and EphB3, which detect the presence of certain ligands in the healthy tissue that surround them. These receptors and their ligands serve to organize the structure of intestinal tissue. Thanks to the activity of EphB2 and EphB3, the tumour c
It still amazes me how difficult it can be to respond to a marketing offer. Yesterday I received a direct marketing piece with a call to action that said, "To order call 888-123-4567... hours of operation 9 - 4:30PM Monday through Friday". Okay, I don't know about you, but I'm working during those hours and its not always the most convenient time for me to respond to YOUR offer.This is really just a reminder that in order to optimize effectiveness, for any direct marketing offer, you need to provide multiple options (limit it to 3). Individuals responding should be able to do so in a variety of ways. You need to determine the proper mix, but at a minimum I would suggest the ability to fill out a web form or call.Additional options should be used depending on your audience. Consider including a business reply card (BRC), a return envelope, a fax number, and email address, etc. based on the traditional marketing communication methods your target audience is using.As always, test

Evolutionary adaptations are the result of the competition among individuals of a particular species over many generations in response to an ever-changing environment, including other animals and plants. Certain traits are culled by natural selection favoring those individual organisms that produce the most offspring. This is such a broad concept that, theoretically, all the features of any animal or plant could be considered adaptive. For example, the leaves, trunk, and roots of a tree all arose by selection and help the individual tree in its competition for space, soil, and sunlight.Biologists have been accused of assuming adaptiveness for all such features of a species, but few cases have actually been demonstrated. Indeed, biologists find it difficult to be certain arose by selection and hence can be called adaptive or whether it arose by chance and is selectively neutral. The best example of an evolutionary development with evidence for adaptation is mimicry. Biologists can show
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, which last week had directed all landline, mobile and internet service providers to set up to set up a three-stage redressal mechanism and improve transparency in billing with immediate effect, will carry out surprise checks, if necessary, to ensure compliance.Trai has directed all operators to maintain complete and accurate records of redressal of grievances by its call centres, nodal officers and appellate authorities. Trai, if necessary, will direct any of its officers or employees or through an independent agency appointed by it to inspect the records maintained by the call centres, offices of the nodal officers and the secretariat of the appellate authority.Trai had asked all operators to three-stage redressal mechanism -1) Call centres will be the first level of customer redressal and must address all customer grievances within a maximum period of seven days.2) At the next level, service providers must appoint a nodal officer, whom the c

Description: Suddenly your Web server becomes unavailable. When you investigate, you realize that a flood of packets is surging into your network. You have just become one of the hundreds of thousands of victims of a denial-of-service attack, a pervasive and growing threat to the Internet. What do you do?
Internet Denial of Service sheds light on a complex and fascinating form of computer attack that impacts the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of millions of computers worldwide. It tells the network administrator, corporate CTO, incident responder, and student how DDoS attacks are prepared and executed, how to think about DDoS, and how to arrange computer and network defenses. It also provides a suite of actions that can be taken before, during, and after an attack.
Inside, you’ll find comprehensive information on the following topics
* How denial
