Successful large projects are most often found in companies that have software measurement programs for capturing productivity and quality historical data , Thus any new project can be compared against similar projects to judge the validity of schedules, costs, quality, and other important factors. The most useful measurements for projects in the 10,000-function point domain include measures of th

Whether you’re looking at apartments or houses, planning a renovation project, or just reading the news, some measurements can be pretty hard to visualize. Web utility SensibleUnits converts abstract numbers into more real-world comparisons. You can fit just over seven football fields into 10 acres, for example, and 150 kilograms weighs the same as about [...]

Keynote Systems and Pulvermedia invite you to join Rajeev Kutty, product manager for Voice Perspective(R) on October 3rd at 11am PT for a practical and informative discussion on VoIP Measurements with Meaning: Quality Metrics from the End User Perspective Voice calls are a mission critical component for Contact Centers and Businesses adopting VoIP. The quality of your voice service is the most important measurement of the success of the implementation. If your customers cannot hear you, no amount of flexibility or cost savings is worthwhile. With VoIP's addition to your technical infrastructure, you have added tools, measurements and reports to evaluate. What are the important metrics for your VoIP implementation and where do you get them? This webinar will cover the quality metrics from an "outside - in" perspective including: -- What are the metrics for VoIP including MOS and PESQ -- Where should the data come from -- How to manage service levels Network traffic is inc
Oscilloscope Probes
Measuring signals with oscilloscopes may be challenging task especially high frequency ones. Without proper oscilloscope probes correct measurement of high speed time domain signals wouldn’t be possible. For high speed measurement you should consider signal parameters like amplitude, source impedance, rise time and bandwidth.
There is a wide variety of probes available – passive, active, current-measurement, optical, high voltage and differential. But let’s narrow discussion to probes that are used to measure signals with wide bandwidth and short rise times. There are also many variations on what probe is proper. As probes are potential load to measured circuit, it is important to know its sensitivity to resistive, capacitive or inductive loading. Incorrectly chosen probe (like high capacitance) can distort fast rising signal. Some circuits may not tolerate probes at all (high speed amplifiers).

Space allocation may not be always an easy way to manage when you are not given the benefit of space in your homes. The need to measure furniture such as tables, beds and chairs is a need and with the aid of a trusty tape measure, people can more or less assess the size of furniture they can fit in their place.
To some, having to adjust their desired furniture may be a drag, but given the constraints, people don’t really have much of a choice unless the will be aiming for bigger spaces where all house furniture can easily fit in.

Ok.. I'm back from sorrowful land. Time to give you an update on the progress towards implementing the Project Performance Index measure.I'm pretty set now on the three measure categories (Business Performance, Project Performance, and Team Performance). And so far most of my clients have been willing participants to allowing me to solicit their opinion (about their own performance). One client (actually the VP Sponsor) wasn't too interested in me surveying her hot bed project, but gave the green light for me to survey either of her other two. So in the end I got twice for what I was bargaining for. This month will be the next test. I have to actually report out the results to my peer group. The target value of 80% won't be met so there will be some explaining to do. In all honesty, I'm thinking that reaching 80% attainment in the first quarter of a projects lifecycle is very ambitious. So a note to those interested in implementing this kind of measure, aim for 80% by end o
Yeah!!!.. The first pilot of the new Project Performance Index went exceedingly well today. The project group consisted of 7 team members (plus me = 8). I consider this an optimal size to get a fair cross section of opinions. The team was asked to rate the three performance categories across the range of "Great", "Good", "Caution" and "At Risk". These rating scales are used elsewhere in other project status reporting tools so they were a natural fit to use here. Before asking the group to rate each I framed up the context within the three categories. This gave them a common understanding of what was to be considered, and hopefully educated them about what is considered important.Initially I was surprised at the results. The team rated both Business Performance and Project Performance as Caution to Caution - At Risk. And to their credibility, these brutally honest results were shared among the group. However at second thought, I now consider these results as to be expected. The
I've been looking at these two pictures again and again, not being able to decide where to post them. They are fun, but are they smart and belong on Smart Stuff? Or are they cool enough to fit on Cool Finds? Or are they just crazy? Well here goes. I just decided they are crazy enough and belong right here. I present the most accurate cake plates in the world. I was thinking about the evidence that scientists are using to “prove” that global warming is caused by man. Their main piece of evidence is the CO2 levels in the different layers of ice at the polar ice caps. The measurements show that there are higher concentrations of CO2 in our air today than there were centuries ago. It also shows an almost exponential trend of rising CO2 levels in our atmosphere.
I thought about the nature of CO2 and the nature of ice and started to wonder about something. CO2 is usually a gas and water is a unique solid when frozen. When frozen, ice is actually less dense than it is when it is a liquid and it takes immense amounts of pressure to turn CO2 from a gas into a solid.
Now here is my question to the science community: Is it possible for CO2 to rise through the ice (over a long period of time) creating higher readings of CO2 towards the top of the ice and lower CO2 readings towards the bottom? Has this been tested before? If
So let's say your interested in measuring the performance of your project. How do you go about this? Do you go for a plain vanilla measurement set; measuring quality, time, cost, and scope? Or do you get a bit more creative and measure team effectiveness, management effectiveness, and project process compliance (risk management, change control, phase closures, lessons learned.. etc). The altruistic reason to measure performance is so you can do something about it before it is too late. Therefore adopting measures that indicate outcomes of a process will likely be ineffective. These are sometimes referred to as lagging measures. If you want to do something about a process before it is too late, then your going to be in a better position to do so by adopting leading measures. Leading measures look at the process while it is still active. As project managers you recall the control chart (run charts). This is an example of a measurement system designed to provide in process measur

I usually don't measure my pattern pieces before sewing, but I will now. I was making New Look 6407, a fitted shirt. I checked the finished bust measurement on the pattern tissue for a size 18, and it stated it was 44 inches. I happily cut it out, making my usual narrow shoulder adjustment and started sewing. I could not get it closed in the front!!! I went back and measured the tissue and sure enough, it only measured 40 inches..my bust measurement. So, I measured the next size up, which was a 20, and the finished bust measurement on it was 48, but when I measured it was 44!
Moral of the story, No matter what the printed measurements are, I will measure all the pattern pieces before I cut! I will also contact Simplicity, which distributes New Look to tell them of the discrepanc
