Hace poc
Two pro-environment Mainers fought Susan Collins today
This morning the Senate was all set to consider HR 6049, the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act which passed the House on May 21 with a healthy bipartisan majority; 263-160. At that time thirty-five Republicans joined every Democrat (except Texas’ arch-reactionary Nick Lampson) in passing the bill which [...]

It only takes a few moments in the presence of Daniel McConnell before you start to feel this man is destined for great things. Self-deprecating humor aside, McConnell has a refreshingly positive attitude and his joie de vivre is infectious.

From Think Progress:Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is pushing “$25 million in earmarked federal funds for a British defense contractor that is under criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department and suspected by American diplomats of a ‘longstanding, widespread pattern of bribery allegations.’” McConnell has taken at least $53,000 in campaign donations from the contractor’s political action committees and employees since his 2002 re-election. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is reporting that “an aide for Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell who was spreading false rumors about a 12-year-old boy and his family” (from an emailed release).
Of course he denies such behavior.
The Associated Press has another take on things.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell knew his staff had sent e-mails encouraging reporters to look into the background of a boy recruited by Democrats to support expansion of a children’s health-care program - even as he denied involvement by his aides, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
The Kentucky Republican told a WHAS-TV reporter last Friday that his staff had not been involved in trying to push reporters to look into the financial situation of the 12-year-old boy’s family.
But McConnell spokesman Don Stewart told The Courier-Journal of Louisville that he informed McConnell about the Oct. 8 e-mails sometime around Thursday, the day before the interview with the televisio

McConnell Wavering on Immigration Bill
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate’s Republican leader says he is unsure whether he will vote for the immigration bill President Bush strongly supports, underscoring the measure’s precarious status.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has long called for an immigration overhaul, saying the current situation is deeply flawed. And as the Senate minority leader, McConnell is central to shepherding legislation the president wants.
But in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday, McConnell said he would not decide how to vote on the measure until a long series of amendments are disposed of next week.
“The bill on the merits is a mixed bag,” said McConnell, who had brushed aside reporters’ questions on immigration Tuesday and Wednesday. “I’m not uniformly enthusiastic about it.”
I wonder why the senator isn’t very enthusiastic about el Presidente’s scamnesty.. er.. immigration bill? Do you suppo
Earlier this month, I speculated on the possibility that Democrata may ride another anti-Republican wave and take out the Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) much like the Republicans took out Tom Daschle in 2004.A new poll from the DSCC shows Democratic Congressman Ben Chandler of Lexington one point behind Senator McConnell 45%-44%.The poll, perhaps more importantly, shows McConnell below 50%. It's a partisan poll, so it should be taken with a grain of salt, but if the Senate Minority Leader is vulnerable in a partisan poll...there's already a problem.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says Republicans are trying to craft a “bipartisan solution” to illegal immigration — generating concern among party members who consider President Bush’s goal to be amnesty.
Mr. McConnell, echoing Mr. Bush’s optimism for overhauling immigration law to include citizenship opportunities for illegal aliens, said senators are trying to pull Republicans “together behind our proposal.”
“There’s a pretty broad desire to have an accomplishment, to do something, even among members who voted against final passage last year. There is still a lot of sentiment that a comprehensive bill would be the right thing to do,” said Mr. McConnell, Kentucky Republican.
Mr. Bush last week told foreign leaders he sees reasons for optimism and said that “the mood in the Congress seems like it has changed” in favor of completing a broad bill that includes a path to citizenship — the linchpin of an

The Scottish Sunday papers are predicting that First Minister McConnell might be coming to a sticky end very shortly:
Senior party sources warn there is serious doubt about McConnell's future as leader, amid growing concern that Labour will be hammered at the polls next May.Given recent byelection results, it does seem likely that Labour will be hammered, but I suspect that this has more to do with Labour's UK & international performance than with McConnell's own. On the other hand, the recent announcement by former Health Minister Susan Deacon that she will not stand for re-election in May 2007 appears to indicate in-house dissatisfaction, details of which are still to emerge. The absence of any obvious replacement for McConnell has been seized on with great enthusiasm (if little attention to grammar) by at least one nationalist blogger:
who is being tipped to replace him well three of Jack's loyal henchmen/woman Tom McCabe ,Margaret Curran, and Wendy Alexander, in other words
