On TV the other day it said the Mayan culture had a leader who looked nothing like the regular folk. He had long white hair, blue eyes, and an elongated skull, which the Mayan citizens attempted to emulate by stretching the skulls of their children. The leader guy might have been the mastermind behind the astronomy works performed by the Mayan people, and the construction of their pyramid.Was his elongated skull evidence of a vastly superior intelligence? Was he human? Or alien? Did he hail from Atlantis? How old was he? Hundreds of years? Immortal? Where is he now? Dead? He said he’d return one day. Maybe in 2012?
I saw a short segment on television within the past 24 hours detailing how the Mayan civilization existed during a time when the sun's solar output diminished for some reason. This caused a global cooling trend, which shifted ocean currents, and dried out the Mayan territory. Major droughts eventually lead to cultural devastation.So now, with our man-made greenhouse gases, will we create a global warming trend that shifts ocean currents and causes major freezing in the northern hemisphere? I browse sometimes over the net and find amazing websites. This one is one of those that immediately attracted my attention. The first reason was the diving page. I love diving and it’s always amazing to go down and find a world which is so different from ours. We humans are so clumsy under water. Looking at all those fish that come and go, no worries about pressure or limited air time. We humans can only glaze in astonishment. And that is what I do when I am down. Now I was browsing over this website and saw the photos here. It was a “wow” moment. That is the place I want to be. So I am going to set some money aside and in the future I will come to Playa and enjoy the diving there. Trust me, I will come.

The Mayan culture has undergone substantial changes throughout its existence. It is part of the wider context of Mesoamerican civilization that stretched from Central America into present day southern United States. This civilization was based on the cultivation of Maize and shared the Sacred 260 day calendar. It is estimated that the Maya started to cultivate Maize about 5000 years ago, around the time set for the beginning of their Long Count. It is however only at about the time of Christ that we can talk about the emergence of a high culture among the Maya.
Especially after the beginning of the so called Classical Period around AD 250 the city states of the Maya emerge in their full splendor. It is in this time, that a system of rule by shaman kings emerges in a litterate culture with an advanced calendrical system. While most visitors will look upon these sites as “ruins” they still play a role as ceremonial sites for the contemporary descendants of the ancient Maya.

Caracol Mayan Temples are located in the Chiquibul Rain Forest. A very secluded site, set high in the mountains of Belize and close to the Guatemalan border. Our guests Maya, Al and John spent the day exploring Caracol with our Tour Guide Gonzo.
Below is a video of Tikal Mayan Temple in Flores, Peten, Guatemala. Rob and I flew from Belize to Flores and spent about three days there. The feeling was that apart of me was going home. My great grand mother is from Flores, Peten. I am proud knowing the Mayan blood run through my veins, that my ancestors had it in them to built these temples.
The rareness of things were always the jewels that needed to be rediscovered. What were lost valued more than what were not. Humans had a thing for the lost treasures and lost knowledges. Maya civilization came to an end when the Spanish conquered them in the 16th century. The Mayans were forced into learning how to speak and write in Spanish, and so their very own intricate language was unused since then. The meaning of the Mayan hieroglyphs were also undecipherable. Fortunately, there were some persistent brilliant minds toiled hard and finally deciphered about 90 percent of the lost Mayan hieroglyphs.
