      Group B: Matchday 1 Review
Austria 0 - Croatia 1Germany 2 - Poland 0I am sorry I doubted Germany. Indeed, I apologize. Aside from Jens Lehmann's shaky play early on (and he settled as the match continued), it was more or less smooth sailing for the Nationalelf. In other words, they showed why they are favored to win the tournament. Now, it could all have gone differently -- the Poles had a few chances and controlled the gam

Champions League - Matchday 12 Predictions
So the winner of this match faces Manchester United in the UCL final in Moscow. Wow! how exciting! *snickers in discontent* If I wanted to watch a Premier League match I'd tune into one of the many weekly shows from all around the world to do so... anyway all ranting aside, Liverpool will be pushing shit uphill against a confident Chelsea outfit tonight. Before the weekends match against Man U, I thought Chelsea were dead, but they weren't quite buried and they turned their season around in an instant. A makeshift Liverpool squad on the other hand, had a nightmare against Birmingham and I wonder if they'll be effective tonight. The incentive for Chelsea winning tonight (besides the blooming obvious) is that they'll get to play in their "adopted" homeland in front of thounsands of comrads, w

Champions League - Matchday 12 Predictions
A week in European football is like an eternity in the league especially when there are a number of high profile matches in between. This time last week I was positive that United would be in the drivers seat to face Barca at Old Trafford, given their current form, but since their lack lustre displays at the Nou Camp and Stamford Bridge and the injuries to Vidic and Rooney, this fixture could be turned on its head!United don't lose too many at home, although a draw will be enough to see Barce through. As much as I'd like to see Barca defend their European title, I think United deserve it more this year and it'll go down to the wire.Wednesday matchMan. United 2 v 1 Barcelona

What was John Arne Riise thinking by trying to header the ball at knee height, while not under any serious pressure; and more importantly how much would it suck to be him right now!?I decided to stoop and head the ball in the direction it came from," said the Liverpool defender. "But it was a swerving cross, the ball was wet, and it slid right off my forehead. It was a shock to see it lying in the goal."In what was a scrappy match with few chances either way, Chelsea, as they so often do, kept plugging away and finally in what was the last play of the match, they were gifted that valuable away goal out of nothing... good one Riise, you just cost your team a finals birth! I hope that helps your contract talks in a years time. This flair behind the goals was probably the most exciting thing t

Even if Chelsea bring their A-game I don't see them getting the win tonight.Barca are still without key players and Henry was still sick on Monday, so he's doubtful for the match. Manchester United on the other hand are at full strength and are still on fire so I think that this will be a no-brainer.

Roma were quite unlucky not to get more out of this match and after the match Daniele De Rossi admitted his first-half penalty miss was the pivotal moment in the Italian club's defeat. It was a highly-charged moment and probably I had too much time to think before taking it. I've scored penalties in important games like the World Cup final during my career but tonight I was less fortunate. I'm deeply sorry. I hoped that this would not have happened to me, especially tonight in a special game like this."Let’s get one thing straight, Manchester United without Ronaldo and Rooney are not Manchester United... they’re more like Scunthorpe United on RedBull... and even though they came out charged (that’s what 5 cans does to you), Roma settled and started to play the ball around a lot nicer

Champions League - Matchday 9 Review
An awesome finish by Kazim Kazim, excuse my stuttering, and a wonder strike by Deivid have given Fenerbahçe a good little lead going to Stamford Bridge next week. This match was definitely a game of two halves with Chelsea dominating the first and Fenerbahçe controlling much of the second. A contributing factor to their dominance was the Turkish crowd which really got behind them; I’d suspect that playing in stadium in which 99% of the people eat kebabs and want your head on a stick would be intimidating... anyway the support paid off and now Fenerbahçe can go to London knowing that as well as facing a stadium that wants it managers head on a stick, they’ll be up against a team that hasn’t lost there in a really, really long time; anyone know exactly how long it’s been? A brilliant Arsenal display couldn't break down the stubborn Itie defence. The Gunners pressured high and didn't allow world player of the year, Kaka, much time on the ball... which almost completely closed down Milan's attacking options. The return leg will be interesting.A kick in the face is better than a punch in the undies... well thats what I'd prefer anyway! Fenerbahce just scrapped through with the win and Sevilla go into their match at home knowing a single goal will get them through.Benzema was really in the mood to play against United and peppered the goal all day... and even though he missed a load of opportunities, he did manage to squeeze the ball past three defenders and beat one of the best keepers in the world at full horizontal stretch! Robin van Persie made his long awaited comeback from injury today in preparation for the weekends match against Chelsea at the Emirates. And things looked positive for the experimental Gunners side that had qualified weeks ago. RvP was the center of all things creative in the first half and was involved in starting both moves which lead to Arsenals goals. Another positive is that Cesc Fabregas may be joining up with the squad for the weekend clash also.As I expected, Liverpool stepped up to the plate and knocked Marseille for 6! Delivering some killer blows was the fit again Harry Kewell who had a great game... Funny that, his contract expires at the end of this season, so he may well have just earned himself a new one! CL Matchday Five Claims Last Of The Unbeaten
With Arsenal and FC Porto losing their Champions League games this week, there are now no unbeaten teams left among those still alive in European (UEFA Cup or CL) competitions. Three teams (Chelsea, Man U, Barca) are unbeaten in champions league competition and several others have not lost in their domestic leagues (Arse, Liverpool, Porto, Benfica, Ajax, to name a few) but as far as I can tell everybody who is still playing in the UEFA Cup or UCL has lost at least once this season. There are several unbeaten teams from non "Big Four" leagues that do not play in Europe: Beitar Jerusalem, Wisla Krakow, Romania's CFR Cluj, Partizan Belgrade and CSKA Sofia, who shouldn't really count because they lost their UEFA Cup series to Toulouse on away goals, while not losing either game. Actually, Partizan Belgrade was forced to forfeit their UEFA Cup games with Mostar, which technically counts as a loss but I'm including them here because, well I'm a nice guy. There are also teams from minnow le

Euro 2008 Final Matchday Qualification/Seeding Scenarios
Ten of 14 spots have been decided going into the final day of qualifying games, while a separate battle to not land in the pool of top-seeded teams could prove interesting. Allow me to explain this second point first, before going into everybody's chances (though I reckon you all know that Scotland is eliminated and England can qualify with a tie against Croatia).'Pool 1' will contain the two host nations (Austria and Switzerland) and the defending champion (Greece) plus the top team according to its coefficient, which is gleaned from the last round of Euro- and World Cup-qualifying. For obvious reasons--specifically the fact that Switzerland and Austria suck and Greece is not viewed that highly--teams will not want to be in that pool. Instead, an ideal situation would be to be drawn into the group that has, say, Austria as the "first" seed and if you're in the same pool as them you obviously won't have a chance to be drawn into their group. The UEFA coefficient itself is calculate

As Predicted, A More Volatile Champions League Matchday
Yesterday, Soccer Source predicted trouble for Shakhtar Donetsk and Liverpool, a potential struggle for Real Madrid and smooth sailing for Chelsea. Okay, I also thought Valencia would win their game. And actually, I didn't predict smooth sailing for Chelsea either, but I did say they wouldn't have the cakewalk Arsenal had. Then again, the U.S. men's basketball team at the '92 Olympics didn't quite have that kind of cakewalk. Go here to see the all of the games' goals (thanks to footytube for the links). The biggest surprise on the day in my opinion was Rosenborg which moved into second place in their group thanks to the victory. (And maybe into the top 25 as well? We'll have to wait and see for that). Chelsea are now as good as through. Schalke, whom they beat 2-0 at Stamford Bridge do not look to be as good as they have been in recent years. The Germans are still alive though, trailing Rosenborg by only one point. Real Madrid are also in good shape after a terrific game against

Euro '08 Qualifying: Matchday 15/16 Preview
Scotland face a crucial home game against Ukraine Saturday in a highly competitive Group B. A win can--if my math is correct--knock the Ukrainians out. Scotland then travel to Georgia for the second game. Man U's Darren Fletcher is out for both games and Celtic's Paul Hartley seems likely to join him on the injured list. But the Scots are in the driver's seat and "control their own destiny" for qualifying for their first major tournament since 1998. If they win their remaining three games, they're in. Of course the third game happens to be against second-placed Italy at Hampden Park. Throw in the fact that Italy and third-placed France both have cupcake schedules the rest of the way (both still have to play Faroe Islands, though France's final game is in Kiev--then again Ukraine should be out of their misery at that point) and qualification looks far from certain.Ireland faces a "must win" at home against Germany, but even if they do win qualification is a longshot. UEFA Champions League: Matchday 2 Recap
Last Tuesday and Wednesday were full of accion for UEFA Champions League Soccer-loving fans. Some of the usual winners made their appearances, like Barcelona, Manchester United and Arsenal. Others surprised with their poor soccer game results like Liverpool.  On Tuesday (Oct. 2nd) Man U beat Roma 1-0 with a goal scored by Wayne Rooney. Although they didn’t repeat the 7-goal thrash they had given to Roma in April, it was still more than enough to win the match. Old Trafford ate the italian squad who had some good opportunities to give a reply to that goal, but didn’t really take them. However, Manchester lost one great midfielder temporarily, since Michael Carrick ended up badly injured and might be out of the field for up to 6 weeks.  On other fields, Germany was the home for a great game where Barcelona defeated VfB Stuttgart 0-2. Puyol, which was considered just a replacement, ended up putting it all together just before half-time to score. Too bad he was injured after a while.

Charlton and Chelseas Matchday Football Tactics - Luck or Skilled assessment
I have just been reading an interesting bloggers conundrum put out by Frankie Valley, a Charlton Athletic Blogger.Referring to the differences in Alan Pardews and Jose Mourinhos tactical nous he suggests that -"football management is 1% perspiration, 1% inspiration, and 98% luck. You can put the same team out every week, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. You could make the same changes at half-time every week, and get a completely different effect every time you try it"It's an interesting argument and one that has received much feedback. Here is my take based upon how I felt going into matches and what I saw at Professional Football Clubs.By the time match day arrives, 95% of the preparation has been made for the game. The manager and his coaching staff have completed 95% of the work necessary to get the result.Players have been prepared during the week, told their duties. The manager has done most of his work in the run up to the game. He has studied the opposition on tape

I really impressed the level of football of these youngsters and they really showed their true colors. They really matured on how they played despite of the Malaysian hot and humid weather. I understand that they can’t stand the heat but this will benefit them and give a new experience on how to play in such condition. Champions League Matchday 5
All,A lot of midweek games this week. Within the Champions League we have Matchday 5 and in the Uefa cup it's matchday 3.Today we will concentrate on matchday 5.First let's start with the Bwin.com Tueday special. This one is a little bit tricky but you'll never know.Real Madrid - Lyon (1.90, 3.25, 3.75)The number 1 in group E visits number 2. Real lost 2-0 in Lyon, but is now playing much better. Van Nistelrooy has fitted in and scoring goals on command. Both team are already qualified for the next round so it is just a matter of proud. The fans of Real expect a nothing less than a victory therefor I favour Real.Celtic - Man U (4.00, 3.20, 1.85)Nice odds for Manchester. The home game of Manchester was a beautiful game to watch. Man U won with 3-2. Within Scotland Celtic is undefeated for 13 games but in Europe the story is different (won 2. lost2). For the moment they are still unbeaten in the home games in this campaign but Man U will end this streak. This combination will pay out

      Uefa Cup Matchday 4
As promised my bets for the Uefa Cup Matchday 4. The odds are pretty high for almost all matches indicating that it avery difficuly games. Besides the Uefa Cup matches there are also 6 games in the Premier league.Uefa Cup matchday 4:My selection.AZ - Slovan Liberec (1.42, 3.95, 7.50)AZ at home is a very strong team. AZ only needs one more point to be absolytly sure of the next round. But they won't settle for one point and also the home crowd will be only satisfied with a victory. Life is not easy and cannot be trown in statistics but: AZ defeated Braga at home with 3-0, while Braga won easily 4-0 against Liberec at home. I have no doubt that AZ will win.Osasuna - OB (1.45, 3.90, 7.00)Osasuna has to win to keep a change on qualification. Depending on the result of Lens, OB can qualify for the next round with only one single point. But I don't believe that they will gain this point in Osasuna.Celta de Vigo - Fenerbache (1.73, 3.45, 4.50)Celta only has a change of qualification if they

Uefa Cup Matchday 4: The sequal
Ok I admit the X2 bet on Brugge was a bit risky. And everybody who watched the game should agree that a draw or even a win for Brugge was possible. A lot of refs in the world would have shown the red card to Runje. And you can discus the penalty for Besiktas, but I cannot say that Besiktas did not deserver to win.The draw of AZ was a bigger surprise! But that's live.So all my combinations are lost. So I will create another one (OK two) for tonight. The first combination is the Bwin special as shown above within the banner.Ajax - Espanyol (1.65, 3.40, 4.70)No question about it. Ajax will win. They have to to avoid a crisis. After losing back to back against PSV ans surprisinly against Sparta last weekend, it is time for a morale booster. And lets be honnest Espanyol is not the top of the Primera Division. The only downside is that Ajax will play without Stam, the leader of the defence.Eintracht Frankfurt - Newcastle (1.70, 3.50, 4.20)Frankfurt has to win to keep a chance on qualificatio

      Final Matchday Champions League
Today the final matchday of the Champions League. While some teams are already qualified other still have a small change but a victory is mandatory.First lets start with the Bwin.com special.Barcelona - Werder Bremen (1.40, 4.00, 7.15)Werder will qualify with a draw of a victory. But winning against Barcelona is not so easy, certainly not if Barca needs to win to qualify themselves. My money is on Barca.Bayern Munich - Inter Milan (2.10, 3.20, 3.20)Both teams are already qualified for the next round, so it is only a matter of prestige. In such games it is more important for the home team to not loose. So I predict a draw or a small victory for Bayern. Cause I don't believe in betting on draws my money is on Bayern. This combination pays-out 2.94€. If you want to play this bet. Simply check to correct boxes above, in the Bwin banner and place your bet.Roma - Valencia (1.50, 3.35, 9.00)I like to bet 0n Valencia but for once I will place a bet against them. Valencia is already qualified

Last matchday Champions League: the sequal
Still nagging about the late goal Inter made. Incredible. The combos for today.First let's starts with the Bwin.com special.Dynamo Kiev - Real Madrid (2.65, 3.25, 2.40)Dynamo lost both other home games and have a goal difference from -11. Real is already qualified for the next round but I doubt it that they will loose a point in Kiev. I consider even the B-team of Real better than Kiev.Lyonnais - Steaua (1.30, 4.50, 9.00)While Lyonnais is already qualified on probably will not play with all its star player I don't believe that they will give the game away. For a player close to the first team it is honour to play Champions League and they want to show their qualities to the European forum. Steaua is already qualified for the next Uefa Cup round. This combination has a possible pay-out of 3.12€. If you want to play this combo just mark the correct boxes in the Bwin banner above, insert the correct betting amount and collect your winnings.Combo2:For combo 2 I only took matches from g

      Matchday 5 Uefa Cup
The last matchday of this year's UEFA cup group rounds. Some teams already know if they can prolong their UEFA cup season and some already know that they are eliminated. Others are still struggling to survive. My 2 combinations:Espanyol - Austria Magna Wien (1.33, 4.50, 8.00)Espaynol is already qualified for the next round and even sure of the first place within the group. So probably they will not play with all its star players but even with the substitutes they should able to win against Wien. Wien failed to collect one single point within this group, which is a surprise with Zulte Waregem also playing in this group. No, this proves that Wien is not good enough for this European campaign.Feyenoord - Wisla Krakow (1.50, 3.85, 6.25)The number 4 receives the number 3. Within this group 2 qualifiers are already known, namely Nancy and Blackburn. Feyenoord and Wisla are fighting for the next ticket. I favor Feyenoord cause they have the home advantage and are focused on a good result afte
