Singapore has submitted a masterplan to Indonesia on how to fight the haze problem, Minister for Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim said on Thursday. The minister said he would be in Indonesia next week to attend the third Ministerial Committee meeting on haze and he hoped that the Indonesian authorities would implement the masterplan soon, local television Channel NewsAsia reported. The masterplan includes various initiatives to help solve the haze problem, such as helping the Jambi province to tackle and prevent forest fires. Yaacob also said he would persuade Indonesia to deliver on its proposed initiatives.

Singapore and Indonesia are working this week on a masterplan to prevent fires and the acrid haze from central Sumatra that blankets several South-East Asian countries annually, officials said Wednesday. The plan is expected to cover fire prevention and suppression, legislation and enforcement, early warning and monitoring, and regional and international collaboration. The haze from land clearing in several Indonesian provinces has been a heated topic in Singapore's parliament after it pushed air-quality ratings into the very unhealthy range last year in the city-state, Malaysia as well as Indonesia. More than 15,000 hotspots were detected in September and October.
