After more than five months on the Martian surface, NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander has said its farewells to the Earth as the decline in solar power forces the spacecraft to shut down. Phoenix last communicated with mission engineers on 2 November but there is still hope the lander will revive itself and phone home. In addition to shorter daylight hours, Phoenix must also contend with a dustier sky
New HiRISE images have revealed two rare sightings of impact craters in the Mars’ northern polar regions. In the first image, an unusual solitary mound protruding from a depression in a slope in Mars’ north polar layered terrain was brought to the attention of HiRISE scientists. Mars’ layered terrain is made up from stacks of ice and dust several kilometres thick, and is thought to contain m
Like everyone else, I am also wondering if there is life on Mars. Recently with the Phoenix mission to explore the planet Mars, researchers have discovered that there’s ice on the red planet. This is fascinating news because where there is water, there is a good chance that there might be or might have been [...]
Considering how popular he (and his merchandise) has been over the years, here's some news you can file under "Huh, I wonder why they never thought of this before": Marvin the Martian, the intergalactic Looney Tunes character celebrating his 60th birthday this year, will soon star in his own feature film.Warner Bros. is currently developing the movie, which will reportedly mix live action and comp
As a young boy, one of the better impersonations I could do consisted of speaking from the back of my throat in a semi-high pitched voice, and saying “I do believe you are right.” Marvin the Martian was one of my favorite animated characters at the time, and still is. His exploits on Planet X versus Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century still make me laugh today.
But that the popular Looney Tun

The image above shows the sun setting on another world or beneath the rim of Gusev Crater to be more precise. NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit captured the scene on 19 May 2005. The image is surreal because it generates the feeling that humanity is small and insignificant when compared to the vastness of space. Some familiar events that we perceive daily on earth which become our reality ar

I’m a Marvel Zombie. DC treats their heroes like icons and not like characters. They have no idea what to do with Superman or Batman or Wonder Woman, not wanting to tarnish the characters’ precious iconography, so they don’t do much of anything with them. As such, DC cranks out dozens of the most [...]
Launched in August 2007, the Phoenix Mars Mission is the first in NASA's Scout Program. Phoenix is designed to study the history of water and habitability potential in the Martian arctic's ice-rich soil. The Phoenix Mars Mission has a collaborative approach to space exploration. As the very first of NASA's Mars Scout class, Phoenix combines legacy and innovation in a framework of a

WASHINGTON: NASA scientists readied for the landing of the 420-million-dollar Phoenix spacecraft near Mar’’s frigid north pole. Phoenix will enter the Martian atmosphere at around 2331 GMT Sunday at about 21,000 kilometers (13,000 miles) per hour and rely on its thermal shield, then a parachute followed by a bank of pulse thrusters, to [...]

The plan is to develop and miniaturize the “Alphachron” — an exploration technology currently employed by the Australian minerals industry to determine the age of minerals. If [...]
Wow. Two year. I can’t believe I let a blog last for two years. I’ve been keeping an online journal for almost ten years, and when the mood strikes, I just delete the entire thing. Not just the entries, but I delete the entire journal. Then after a couple of months, I’ll be “normal” again [...]
Most of us sit on our front porches in St. Paul minding our own business. Passersby get a nod. Friends stop and chat. The greeting a "little green man" from Mars might receive is unthinkable. If that "little green man"...

CHICAGO – There was opportunity aplenty for director Kristina Schramm to miss this mark and leave theatergoers with acidic resentment. Tasked with the tall order of bringing to life Ray Bradbury’s classic anthology “The Martian Chronicles,” though, she wasn’t bested by the oddity of the undertaking.
Instead, the cast and crew of this Chicago production inventively transformed the Lincoln Square Theatre – set squarely within a North Side church – into Mars where Martians roamed with normalcy.
Instead of E.T. descending upon Earth, though, earthlings in this twist of storytelling pervade the aboriginal Martians in their native land for exploration, dreams of dollar signs and even succulent hot dogs.
Bradbury was used to reversing the traditional pendulum of the written wor

It was sometime in the very early eighties, in that time when, if you lived in the suburbs, the seventies still hadn't ended. I was in grade school - grade four, specifically - and I was about as awkward as they come at that age: tall and skinny and shy and cursed with a coarse mass of wavy dirty-blonde hair that my mother tried to keep tamed in pigtails that looked more like rough shipping rope

There are many similarities between this poster for Martian Child and the poster for last year’s The Pursuit of Happyness. But the one I find most remarkable is that the two posters use a fake looking flare effect between the two actors. Weird. And I didn’t like it them, still don’t like it now.
Besides that, I do like the poster, and for much of the same reasons that I liked the poster for Pursuit. It shows the characters acting naturally and not in some forced pose. And because of that their interaction sheds some light into what their relationship is like, which makes me interested in seeing it develop. Overall I think the execution of the Pursuit poster was much better, but still, a nice poster.

The surface of Mars is now obscured by a globe-engulfing veil of dust, officials report, posing a potentially longer-lasting threat to the plucky NASA rovers on the planet's surface.A collection of massive regional dust storms, first reported by SPACE.com, have been whipping up a "planet-encircling veil of dust" on the red planet since late June of this year, according to a recently published release by Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) in San Diego, Calif."The dust raised by these individual storms has obscured most of the planet over the past few weeks," the company said. A series of images shows how the regional storms, which covered about 10 million square miles (25.9 million square kilometers) two weeks ago, have lifted enough dust to blot out the surface of the red planet. Sun-obscured explorersThe Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity weathered the regional storms by cutting back their activity, but the global dust event may escala

Author of six other novels, Chuck Rosenthal, has recently released his latest literary work, "The Heart of Mars." The plot of this fantasy/sci-fi novel is pretty interesting. Global warming has caused the habitation of Mars in the year 2450 by a race known as the Nution. A freighter that is carrying a load from the farms of Europa is hijacked and is last seen heading toward Mars. Detective, Marl, who is both human and Nution, is sent to investigate this issue. He discovers the utopian dream of the Nution is not as it seems, and that the solar system is on the verge of revolution. This novel, part detective story, part action adventure, had me thinking and intrigued as I sat and read it through, cover to cover. I think that you'll enjoy it as well. It's a nice break from the tensions of reality and business. Grab a cup of tea, pick up the book, The Heart of Mars by Chuck Rosenthal, and enjoy. Here's to your relaxation!Tony

A Martian Anthropologist Takes A Look At Our Food
We go to the store and turn on the television to be confronted by the most amazing shades of neon, and a circus of novelty products – all of which are sold in the food section of every local grocery store.
But we have to ask ourselves a very basic question: are these products even food at all? Never before has humanity had to think about this.
Astrobiology: A UCL-led study has found that probes designed to find life on Mars do not drill deep enough to find the living cells that scientists believe may exist well below the surface.Although current drills may find essential tell-tale signs that life once existed on Mars, cellular life could not survive the radiation levels for long enough any closer to the surface of Mars than a few metres deep - beyond the reach of even state-of-the-art drills."The study, published in the journal 'Geophysical Research Letters', maps out the cosmic radiation levels at various depths, taking into account different surface conditions on Mars, and shows that the best place to look for living cells is within the ice at Elysium (see "ESA's Mars Express sees signs of a 'frozen sea'" below), the location of the newly discovered frozen sea on Mars.Lead author Mr Lewis Dartnell, (UCL Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology - CoMPLEX), said: "Finding hints th
