      Martial arts and Self defense
I have always wondered what it takes to learn martial arts and self defense. That said, I also want to know the truth about Martial Arts and of course, self defense. I tell you when I hear of a woman fully equipped and trained in Martial Arts, I can't help but admire and look up to her.At CloseCombatTraining.com, I discovered a lot of information through Captain Chris Pizzo who has worked not only on spreading the truth about martial arts, but also in imparting his knowledge in a manner that is easy to learn and understand. Captain Chris' Close Combat online site has articles about self defense, close combat and martial arts. Just by browsing through, I gained a lot of insights and really make me want to learn how to properly protect myself and family when the need arises. Why not join me in taking a free 30 day no obligation "test drive" of the highly acclaimed close combat training program? It pays to learn and learning it from the master is the only way.

Sharing My Experience About Martial Arts
A few years back, I was able to enroll myself into some martial art called aikido, a japanese inspired martial art that is based upon the foundation of close combat training. I went every afternoon on monday, wednesday and friday together with my older brother and one of his friend. I stayed on the program for a year or so and I had to quit due to time constraints that I had with school.Having a background with martial arts does not guarantee safety to any type of combat or brawl but it sure does help if you have a move or two to use if ever something unexpected comes up. If I were you, I would only go to the World Leader In Self Defense so that its going to be the safest and the most proper way possible. The truth about martial arts is not very well known since the origin of the art came from the time the chinese then spread all over the continent then into the world.

      Martial Arts for Disabled People
A few years back, when I was at my previous school, the focus was on training kids, and for some reason many of the kids were autistic to varying degrees. Prior to meeting these kids, I really had no idea what autism was. I mean, in a very abstract way, autism was to me something that Rainman had... idiot savante type stuff. Crazy math skills and not much else. Turns out, lots of kids are autistic and more are being diagnosed all the time. While it's unclear as to what is causing the dramatic increase in the number of autistic kids, I've heard and read many theories. While some will point to over-diagnosis and medical fraud, I just don't see it. The kids I met were clearly struggling to make his body follow his mind's instructions. The theory that seems most reasonable to me is the increase in multi-use vaccinations that use what is in theory a safe form of mercury, thimerosal, as a stabilizer/preservative. Some of the theories point to environment, food allergies, but we began usi

Martial Arts Training for Real Self-Defense: Making Sense of Chaos
By: Jeffrey MillerI once had a talk with a student who pointed out the almost insane notion that anyone could think that they could use a preset string of moves (known as a kata, pronounced kah-tah) to handle something as chaotic as a fight. He said it made no sense to him how any master, who really knew what he was talking about, could pass down "the answer" to such an unknown as a fight. He's right. And yet, day after day, in countless schools, training centers, police departments, and military units around the world, there are those who believe that what they are learning will be exactly what they need to win, should they ever be attacked. Can you imagine, for those of you who have yet to be accosted, what it feels like inside the heart of an attack? I mean, what do you know about the situation that you haven't been in yet?Unless you're clairvoyant and can see into the future - in which case you wouldn't need self-defense training because you would either...1) know what to avoid,

Is All This Martial Arts Training Gear Necessary?
By: Jeffrey Miller*Please note: While this piece was written directed at parents of youth members, adult students should keep all of the relevant safety points in mind. Remember: Safety and vigilance are not 'things' to do. They are constant states of mind.Occasionally, a staff member or I will have a parent come to us with something like: "This past year, my daughter grew six inches and gained 50 pounds. As a result, I had to buy protective gear twice. It's so expensive and she is heading for another growth spurt. Is all this equipment necessary?"The answer, honestly, is Yes! You see, a lot more is changing than height and weight. We as parents and teachers easily notice the emotional and physical changes in children as they grow older, however, the mental and skeletal changes we can't see are just as important and unpredictable. During growth spurts, the bones are growing quicker than the muscles and tendons.Even as they reach their full height, their skeletal and muscular system

The Best Martial Arts Teacher - the video camera
When bodybuilders prepare for competition, there goal is to lose a lot of body fat whilst keeping there muscles big and toned. To gauge there fat loss some take a fat loss test comparing themselves to a certain time before. Others uses the pinch test to determine there body fat but the best device they can use is the video camera. Nothing will tell them weather there ready for competition like this useful invention because they SEE WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE when they move! A martial artist should have the same approach to there training. For instance, if you have a habit of dropping your hands low when you perform a roundhouse kick, it doesn't matter if a thousand people tell you you are doing it, you may not start to change until you either, get hit when you kick in sparring, or see it in action yourself when training alone. I know i would rather see it than feel it! Seeing yourself when practising on the heavy bag for instance will give you a clear indication of faults you have, and may

YouTube: Martial Arts Student Arrested with Knife at Courthouse
Marc Frison, who is a martial arts student, was arrested and charged with a felony after deputies found a martial arts knife in his gym bag.  Frison said he was at court to straighten out a traffic citation and forgot to take the knife out of his bag when he passed through the courthouse security.  However, deputies say Frison got arrested because he questioned them when they took the knife, and that he then got out of control.  The judge also said that Frison was uncooperative.  His bond has been set at $100,000.

Are patterns (forms) useful in Martial Arts?
Many practitioners of other martial arts seem keen to question the usefulness of learning patterns (forms). Particularly those training in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and other purely combat based systems. The argument runs that learning patterns does not in any way aid fighting ability. There are two problems with this.Firstly, Taekwondo is not just about fighting & self defense. It is a complete martial art in that the student is learning a wide range of skills that apply to situations in life other than combat situations. Mental discipline and physical fitness aid the Taekwondo student in most aspects of their lives. Learning patterns helps with mental discipline, gives the student a means to practice when alone and is of course the backbone of the grading syllabus. If Taekwondo were merely about combat ability a grading/belts system would not be needed. The senior students would be simply measured by their success in defeating other opponents.Secondly, patterns, when executed co

Female Mixed Martial Arts Has A Bright Future
At least if chicks like this continue to be involved in the sport. Between "Fight Girls" and hot women like Nikki Berwick being involved, there are more than enough reasons for this sport to thrive. Think about it, would you rather watch Tito Ortiz and some guy roll around with each other, or two hot chicks? While there is something to be said for seeing a guy pound the life out of another guy, I'll take ladies any day. From the aptly named Female Mixed Martial Artists:Nikki Berwick is a trained Tang Soo Do practioner. She won several titles in England, World British And European. Nikki works as a stunt woman on a lot of films you may have seen....Blood and Chocolate, Casino Royale (2006), Basic Instinct 2 (2006), The Legend of Zorro (2005), Alexander (2004) (stunts) (uncredited), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), Thunderbirds (2004), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and Ella Enchanted (2004).Also on the site with impressive, uh, credentials are Lisa King, K

      Martial Arts and Promotion
I was talking about grade testing, belt promotions and the way different schools handle both of these issues the other day with some folks from my BJJ school. It also seems to be coming up frequently on several of the various MA blogs I enjoy, and I've left a couple of comments on their blogs. All of this has got me thinking, a dangerous thing indeed, about my views on the subject.First, I studied at another school prior to training at Foster BJJ. My old school was a style that incorporates many different ranges of combat: striking, clinching, some ground work. The training, the style, the science... all of this really appealed to me in theory. But ultimately, it was the culture that drove me away.I love BJJ. There isn't a single thing about it that I don't enjoy. I like the conditioning. I like the technical complexity. I enjoy the competitive aspects of it. But it's the culture that really appeals to me. I've said more than once over the last few days that I really

Only Real Martial Arts Stop Rapists
The following is an excellent article by Chris “Lt X” Pizzo. “One of my favorite stories to tell is about the time my brother-in-law’s girlfriend got her black belt in karate… She had her big flashy test…kicked the bag…sparred other girls (and a couple of guys that looked like girls!) with the foam booties and gloves on…did her kata with the appropriate “snap” in her movements…very nice. Now, I’m not a complete jerk, so I let her have her moment. Congratulated her, hobnobbed with the karate “master”, and ate a piece of the sheet cake with little icing karate dudes on it…. That was until a couple of months later at a family graduation party when she began to tell all the girls how the type of “karate” she studies is great for fitness (ok), fun (ok), and self defense (BZZZZZ!). I had stood what I could, but I couldn’t stands it no more… I walked right up into the

      Martial Arts and Women
By James LiuMore and more people are getting involved in Martial Arts due to its many benefits and its self defense techniques. This is especially true with women. There is certainly no denying that women often feel more intimidated in this world than men do. Physically weaker than a man, women are often at risk and often they would not have a clue as to how to protect themselves if the need arose. Luckily there is something that you can do if you are a woman and you feel a little intimidated, and that is joining a Martial Arts class! How a Martial Arts Class May be Able to Help YouThere are a variety of different Martial Arts classes available to choose from and so you should definitely find something to suit your needs. You also have the option of choosing between a Martial Arts class aimed specifically for women or a mixed gender class which may be of preference to some women.Obviously it all depends upon personal preference as to which kind of class you join, but overall there are ad

      My Martial Arts Background
30/09/1999 – My Martial Arts BackgroundFull MA experience listed hereFor anyone that wants to know my background in martial arts (as usual, this will be a little long-winded…), I started off with a year of fencing at Yarm School. Up to that point, I had never been especially interested in sports, mainly because I was crap at them all. Fencing appealed to me largely because I’m a geek: I saw it as a way of connecting with the fantasy books I read avidly (and still do, when I get the chance outside of PhD reading) throughout my youth. The same impulse would lead me, somewhat bizarrely, to a brief stint at horse riding in another school. I think I started fencing lessons around 1993/1994, but not completely certain - I do remember it was just before I moved down South.Unfortunately, I wasn't able to keep up the fencing at my new school, so had to wait until 1999 to get back into martial arts. In September of that year, I began my English Lit BA at Warwick University, having spent t
