We post about a kaleidoscope of topics here at WUD, where our primary mission is to inform and educate. However I got an email from a reader asking that we post about the Florida Marlins. Not much of a baseball fan here but we try to please here at WUD so I have dug up some stats. Let's see yesterday I don't think there was a game was there? Ok on Sunday they played the Colorado Rockies and the
Carlos Delgado clubbed a two-run homer to help the Mets down the Marlins 4-1 in the second-of-three at Dolphin Stadium. David Wright plated one run and scored another, and Carlos Beltran had an RBI single as New York won for the fifth time in seven games. Oliver Perez tossed six innings of five-hit, one-run ball to improve to 7-and-6 with the win. Billy Wagner fanned two in the ninth to notch h
Maine Leaves Game With Stiff Shoulder; Mets Fall, 7-3VIDEOWe've been trying to figure out how these Florida Marlins have stayed competitive in the NL East this year. They play horrendous defense and don't seem to have a whole lot of depth. That notwithstanding, they do play with heart and do not give in. On Monday night in Miami, they took full advantage of John Maine's early departure and went on
Josh Willingham's second home run of the game was a walk-off shot in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Marlins to a 6-5 win over the Nationals in the first of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium. Willingham drove in three runs and scored three times. Hanley Ramirez sent the game into extra innings by popping a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth. Kevin Gregg pitched a scoreless inning
Andrew Miller hurled seven innings of six-hit, one-run ball to lead the Marlins to a 6-1 win over the Mariners in an interleague matchup at Safeco Field. Luis Gonzalez drove in two runs with a single and a sac-fly, and Jeremy Hermida and Dan Uggla each had two hits and an RBI for Florida. The Fish improved to 1-and-2 on their nine-game road trip through Tampa, Seattle and Oakland. Carlos Silva
Ricky Nolasco was only one out away from a complete game as the Marlins mauled the Rays 9-3 to salvage the finale of a three-game Interleague set at Tropicana Field. Nolasco struck out 12 over eight-and-two-thirds-innings of six-hit, three-run ball to move to 7-and-4 on the year. Wes Helms and Mike Jacobs each belted three-run homers for Florida, which put an end to a three-game losing streak.
Jamie Moyer tossed eight innings of two-hit, shutout ball as the Phillies blanked the Marlins 3-0 to salvage the finale of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium. Moyer fanned three and walked only one to improve to 7-and-3 on the season and 9-and-0 in nine lifetime starts against the Marlins. Brad Lidge recorded the final three outs to capture his 18th save. Hanley Ramirez smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, his second long ball of the game, as the Marlins rallied to beat the Braves 6-4 at Turner Field. Mike Rabelo tied the game with his two-run homer in the big ninth inning for Florida, which won for just the second time in eight contests. Justin Miller tossed two perfect frames in relief to pick up the win. Kevin Greg
Pat Burrell's two-run double in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Phillies rallied for a 7-5 win over the Marlins in the rubber match of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park. Chase Utley hit his 20th homer of the season, and Geoff Jenkins belted a two-run shot for Philadelphia, which came back from a 5-1 deficit to take two-of-three in the series and move a half-game ahead o

Luis Castillo and Jose Reyes also homered for the Mets, who won the final two games of the three-game series. Duaner Sanchez gave up a go-ahead solo homer to Alf
After Brass Endorses Randolph, Team Falls to Fish, 7-3BoxscoreWillie Randolph gets to keep his job. That's what the Wilpons and Omar Minaya decided yesterday afternoon. After last night's 7-3 beating by Florida, Willie might just consider quitting. Why not? The team has quit on him...It appears that this flawed team has still not recovered from last September's historic collapse. They may never.
Willie Randolph may have gotten a reprieve from owners, but that hardly means his team would perform any differently tonight than they did in the last, oh, eight months or so.The National League's highest-paid team, the Mets, lost 7-3 to the Marlins, the NL's lowest-paid team, and to make matters worse, the team predicted to finish in the NL basement, the Marlins, are now 10 games over .500, and t

Cody Ross' solo homer in the fifth inning held up as the Marlins handed Brandon Webb his first loss of the season with a 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks at Dolphin Stadium. Webb gave up three runs on six hits over seven frames to fall to 9-and-1 on the year. He was trying to become the first pitcher since Andy Hawkins in 1985 to win his first 10 starts. According to the AP, The Florida Marlins and shortstop Hanley Ramirez agreed on a contract extension for six years and $70 million. Despite the history with the Marlins of dumping high-value players or trading them, they have decided to put an investment with one of their core players -- in fact, he may be one of the top three in the game. Many, yes -- including myself, have been very critical of the Florida organization with their high turnover of players and taking the revenues they receive to not reinvest in their team. They scout well and know how to pick young talent, but it seems that the fan base down there are a little disillusioned with the franchise.Well, let's hope this is a sign of change down there. An official announcement is expected to come as early as next week, according to
Matt Treanor went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer as the Marlins completed a three-game sweep of the Brewers with a 7-2 victory at Dolphin Stadium. Jorge Cantu launched a two-run shot and Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-3 as the Fish improved to 20-and-14 with their fifth win in six games. Logan Kensing struck out four over two-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Mike Rivera had an RBI single for the Brewers, who have dropped six in-a-row. Starting pitcher Carlos Villanueva had two hits and an RBI, but was shelled for seven runs on 10 hits in five innings to suffer the loss.

Scott Olsen allowed just two hits while striking out eight and walking four over eight-and-two-thirds scoreless innings to lead the Marlins to a 3-0 victory over the Brewers in the opener of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium. Olsen improved to 4-and-1 with the win. Kevin Gregg recorded the final out to notch his sixth save after Olsen loaded the bases in the top of the ninth. Luis Gonzalez had an RBI single and Mike Jacobs smacked a two-run homer for the Fish, who upped their record to 18-and-14 on the season. Jeff Suppan allowed all three runs over five frames to fall to 1-and-2 with the loss. The Brewers have dropped four straight.
Assuming the Los Dodgers keep up their torrid pace, they may supplant Arizona atop the National League West standings in a very short span of time; the team's "hero du jour" (hero of the day in French) in their game Thursday against the Florida Marlins was Matt Kemp as he had a tie-breaking base hit in the 9th inning, leading Los Angeles past Florida 5-3 at Dolphin Stadium. Los Angeles was led by Juan Pierre with 2 hits, including a double, a stolen base, a run scored and 2 RBIs. The winning pitcher was Joe Beimel (3-0) who pitched 1/3 of an inning while Takashi Saito notched his 4th save. Florida was led by Matt Treanor with 2 hits and a run scored while Cody Ross hit his first home run of the season, adding a run scored and 2 RBIs. Kelvin Gregg took the loss as he pitched an inning, allo
Blake DeWitt drove in four runs as the Dodgers decimated the Marlins 13-1 in the second installment of a three-game series at Dolphin Stadium. Russell Martin was 2-for-2 with a homer, three walks, three runs scored and an RBI for Los Angeles, which has won five in-a-row. Matt Kemp had three hits, three RBI and two runs scored, while James Loney smacked a three-run triple in the victory. Chad Billingsley struck out eight over seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball to pick up his first win of the season. Jeremy Hermida plated Florida's only run with an infield single in the fifth. Scott Olsen gave up four runs on seven hits over five frames to fall to 3-and-1. The Marlins were outhit 15-to-5 in the lopsided loss.
Jeff Kent singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and the Dodgers held on to edge the Marlins 7-6 in the opener of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium. Kent had two hits and three RBI, and Andre Ethier went 2-for-3 and scored three times, as Los Angeles won its fourth straight. Joe Beimel hurled a scoreless eighth inning to move to 2-and-0 with the win. Jorge Cantu was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Florida, which has dropped two-of-three. Kevin Gregg allowed the deciding run to fall to 3-and-1 with the loss.
Hanley Ramirez led off the game with a home run and the Marlins never looked back as they cruised to a 7-2 win over the Braves at Turner Field. Mike Jacobs clubbed a two-run shot for the Fish, who improved to 13-and-8 with their fourth win in five games. Dan Uggla finished with three hits and two RBI for Florida. Andrew Miller went five innings to pick up his first win of the season. Matt Diaz hit a solo homer and Mark Teixeira drove in a run for the Braves, who fell to 10-and-11 with the setback. Jeff Bennett allowed three runs in six innings of work to suffer the loss.
[Recap] The Bucs are finally back in the win column. Nate McLouth is finally absent from the "hit" column. Paul Maholm was very solid and notched his first win of the season. It didn't start well, though. Recall Paul's first start. He gave up a homer to leadoff hitter Hanley Ramirez to open his season. Then, Paul dominated for 5 innings. Maholm started out last night's game by serving up a double to Ramirez. He then got 2 strikeouts. A single brought Hanley home, and that was that. 1-0. Ricky Nolasco owned the Pirates through 5. Maholm had the only Pirate hit in that span. Then, with 1 out, Nate McLouth drew a walk to kick off a crazy bottom of the 6th. Nate broke for second in what should have been an easy steal. Replays showed he beat the tag to second. Then, the Marlin who

That originally seemed like a raw deal for the Bucs when the schedule came out. Now it seems like a good thing. Florida is 3-1 against us this year, and tonight's starter, Ricky Nolasco, has pitched well against the current Pirate squad. [PLC]:As a team, [the Pirates against Nolasco] are just 9-48 with one XBH (a double from Ryan Doumit).Maholm, on the other hand, has been up-and down. He was a strikeout machine in his first start of the year against these Marlins, before he gave up a grand slam to Mike Jacobs. He pitched 5.1 flawless innings vs. the Reds at PNC in his second start before leaving due to rain. At LA
Hanley Ramirez and Josh Willingham both clubbed two-run homers to power the Marlins to a 10-4 victory over the Pirates at Dolphin Stadium. Dan Uggla hit a solo shot for the Fish, who pounded out 16 hits en route to their third consecutive victory. Mark Hendrickson allowed eight hits and four runs, but just three earned, over eight innings to move to 4-and-1 with the win. Hendrickson also got the job done at the dish, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Xavier Nady doubled and drove in two for Pittsburgh, which has dropped six in-a-row. Matt Morris took the loss, giving up eight runs in just four innings to fall to 0-and-3.
[Box]None of us were right. For the definition of "wishful thinking" see the predictions section of last post. Matt Morris is awful. 0-3. 8 runs in 4 innings. Tonight he came out throwing strikes. The Marlins hit it. Hard. The Pirate offense came from Nady, Paulino, and Morris himself. Bay, LaRoche, and Sanchez continue to struggle. The best moment of the game came when we were down 10-2 in the 8th when McLouth singled in his final AB to extend his hitting streak to 19 (every game this year). The Bucs will be in last by the end of tonight unless Houston blows an 8 run lead over San Diego.

They have two each with Florida and St. Louis, then meet the Phillies for three, all at PNC.Why is it so important?Nobody is giving the Pirates a chance to contend this year. That's a given. But some people (although most don't) do think this team has a shot to make a run at .500. Do I? Well, I'd argue nearly any team can finish .500 with some good fortune, so why can't the Pirates. But that's a different discussion. The Pirates were 7-6 before losing 5 in a row to fall to 7-11. If they continue at a losing pa

Last season, Florida Marlins starting pitcher Scott Olsen had a terrible year, going 10-15 with a 5.81 ERA (awfully high for an National League starting pitcher). This season, he has reverted somewhat to his old self; in Sunday's game, Olsen pitched 7 strong innings, leading Florida to a 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals at Dolphin Stadium. Florida was led by Hanley Ramirez as he went 2-for-5 with 2 home runs, 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs while Dan Uggla and Jorge Cantu also added 2 hits apiece - with Cantu hitting 2 doubles. The winning pitcher was the aforementioned Olsen (3-0) as he pitched 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits, an earned run, walking 2 while striking out 3. Washington was led by Austin Kearns who went 1-for-4 with a HR, a run scored and an RBI. Luis Ayala (0-1) took the
Two of the Atlanta Braves' old standbys, Chipper Jones and John Smoltz, discovered the fountain of youth; ironically or not, the fountain of youth was located in Miami. Jones went yard twice while Smoltz went 5 scoreless innings, leading Atlanta to the shutout win over the Florida Marlins Thursday at Dolphin Stadium. Jones led the Braves' attack as he went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, 2 home runs, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs while a trio of Braves had 2 hits apiece - Brian McCann, Jeff Francoeur and Mark Kotsay; McCann, Mark Teixeira and Kelly Johnson added a HR apiece. Smoltz (3-0) got the win as he pitched 5 innings, allowing only 3 hits, walking 2 while striking out 10. Florida was led by a trio with a hit apiece - Hanley Ramirez, Josh Willingham and Mike Jacobs; Ricky Nolasco (1-1) go
Luis Gonzalez's two-run, seventh inning homer proved to be the difference as the Marlins nipped the Braves 6-5 at Dolphin Stadium. Mike Jacobs added a solo shot, and Hanley Ramirez had two hits and two RBI for the Fish, who will go for a three-game sweep on Thursday. Mark Hendrickson gave up three runs on six hits over five-and-a-third innings to move to 3-and-1. Kevin Gregg struck out two in a flawless ninth to notch his third save. Yunel Escobar smacked a two-run homer for Atlanta, which has dropped three straight. Brian McCann and Matt Diaz both plated a run to pull the Braves within one in the eighth. Tim Hudson permitted four runs in just three frames to fall to 2-and-1 with the loss.
The Washington Nationals gave up seven runs to the Florida Marlins in the fifth inning and lost 10-4 at Nationals Park. Mike Jacobs ripped two homers for the Marlins, including one that sealed the big frame. Jacobs has reached the seats four times in his last five games for first-place Florida. The power display backed impressive pitching by Scott Olsen, who dialed up his first win of 2008. Olsen allowed only four hits in seven and two thirds innings. Cristian Guzman clubbed his second homer of the season for the Nats. Paul Lo Duca plated two runs for manager Manny Acta. Washington is in a slump, having dropped its last six games after winning three straight to start the season. For the Nats, Jason Bergmann had a strong first four innings. In the fifth, his first pitch was belted
Coming home didn't change the result for the Washington Nationals, as Washington drops its fifth straight game; this time 10-7 to the Florida Marlins. Hanley Ramirez was three-for-five with a three-run homer and two runs scored as the Marlins outslugged the Nats in the first of three at Nationals Park. Dan Uggla also reached the seats for the "Fish." Florida has won three of four and three in a row over the Nats. Renyel Pinto got the victory after tossing two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief in place of starter Andrew Miller. He surrendered six runs on eight hits in less than four innings. Washington starter Tim Redding was rocked for seven runs on seven hits in four innings, though just one of the runs was earned. Cristian Guzman went three-for-four with two triples and
[MLB.com Wrapup]-----------------------A huge crowd was on hand for this one:-[ESPN]------------The Bucs avoided the brooms at the very empty Dolphin Stadium on Sunday, thanks in large part to a brilliant start from Ian Snell. Snell tossed just 6 innings but notched 10 K's, one short of a career high. Most importantly, he picked up his first win of the year, as the Bucs knocked around Dutchman Rick VandenHurk and the back end of the Marlins' bullpen. One extremely interesting move John Russell made prior to this ballgame: the lineup. Russell benched struggling Bay and LaRoche, giving Mienkiewicz a start at 1B and inserting Nyjer Morgan in center, moving McLouth to left. Morgan led off, McLouth hit 3rd, followed by Doumit and Nady (who hit his 3rd homer). It worked out beautifully. Even tho

[Pirates.com Wrapup]---------------------It was a tale of two Paul Maholms last night. That was clear in his very first inning of work.He started off his season by giving up a moon-shot to Hanley Ramirez on his second pitch. He quickly struck out the next three batters.--The Pirates and fans should be pretty encouraged from what they saw last night. Maholm scored a career high in K's (9) in only 5 innings. He looked super-effective for nearly the entire outing.--One problem: the gopher ball.--Particularly a grand slam from Mike Jacobs (his second game winning homer in two games) that snapped a 1-1 tie in the 5th. --True, it probably wouldn't have happened were it not for a fielding error by Maholm earlier in the inning, but one swing turned what should have been a fantastic outing for Pau
Pirates (2-2) at Marlins (2-2)7:10--Dolphin Stadium, MiamiPaul Maholm (0-0, 0.00) vs. Mark Hendrickson (0-1, 10.80)[MLB.com GameDay]--------------------------After last night's disaster, the Bucs really need to pick up a W tonight. Paul Maholm will make his season debut a couple days late, but he is all systems go. Maholm got off to a terrible start last year but recovered nicely with respectable numbers in the late season. Here's hoping he stays hot.-----For the Fish, it's Mark Hendrickson, who is very tall. At 6-foot-9, this nobody was actually the Marlins' Opening Day starter. That didn't work out so well, as he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings to the Mets. Hopefully the rest of the Pirate offense can get on track against him tonight.--He's pitching today instead of tomorrow because th
[Pirates.com Wrapup]If you ignored the fact that they were playing the lowly Marlins, the Pirates had every reason to lose this game. Matt Morris pitched. Jason Bay and Adam LaRoche stunk once again (combined 0-8). Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson both sat, and were replaced by Chris Gomez and Luis Rivas. Yet, the Bucs were indeed playing an awful team with an awful pitcher, and found themselves in a good position to win. The Pirates had leads of 3-0 and 4-3, but both quickly evaporated at the hands of the overpaid Morris. (Alright, his line after the game doesn't look TOO bad--5INN 3ER 8HIT but he still did not look sharp. Plus, he was facing the Marlins.)---Once again, the usual early-season heroes (Nady, McLouth, Doumit) did their thing to produce some offense, but after 8 innings it was

Luis Castillo ruined quite an impressive box score.Every Mets’ starting position player had at least one hit, one RBI, and one run scored except for Castillo who wasn’t able to manage the RBI in the 13-0 rout.Additionally, all of the starting position players except for Jose Reyes (who was relieved later on in the game by Damion Easley) and Brian Schneider had multiple hits. The starting eight all reached base multiple times, with Reyes walking once and Schneider twice.David Wright and Ryan Church both homered and had three-RBI nights, while Carlos Beltran had a three-double night.Beltran had a home run taken away from him when it appeared that his bomb to right field hit off of the top of the wall. Replays on SNY clearly showed that the ball cleared the fence and had deflected off of a

Well, it’s pretty clear that the Florida Marlins have thrown in the towel for at least 2-3 more years. And yet somehow I feel like the team will be in World Series contention before we know it. Shelling out $21 million for a payroll is one sure way to tell the fans, “relax, [...]
As pleased as Met-land was after Johan Santana effortlessly cruised through seven innings en route to the Mets’ Opening Day victory, is as disappointed as they are after seeing Pedro Martinez limp into the clubhouse Tuesday night against the Marlins after giving up four runs in just three and one-third innings. After the game, it was reported that Pedro said that he felt a pop in the area of his left hamstring. The Mets are calling it a strain and Pedro will have to undergo an MRI for a more specific diagnosis.Jorge Sosa came in and relieved for Martinez, who gave up homeruns to Dan Uggla and Luis Gonzales, as well as an RBI triple to Hanley Ramirez before being escorted off the pitcher’s mound.Joe Smith, Scott Schoeneweis, and Aaron Heilman followed Sosa in throwing scoreless frames on
...This comes from Marty Noble @ Mets.com:CLICK HERE FOR A COMPLETE BOXSCOREIn his ongoing effort to de-emphasize the significance of his debut with the Mets and defuse at least some of the stir it had produced, Johan Santana said -- almost vowed -- he would do "nothing crazy" and "nothing special." Nor would he try to be a hero. And he was true to his word as the Mets began their 2008 season. In the end, what Santana did Monday afternoon against the Marlins wasn't particularly special or at all crazy. And heroic didn't apply either. He was merely effective and, more importantly, successful. His first performance in a new league with his new team was efficient and sufficient and, at the same time, fully satisfying for all involved in it. The most expensive pitcher in the game accomplished

Says Girardi Didn't Abuse Young Pitchers. From Joel Sherman (hat tip to David Pinto):Two years ago, under Girardi, [the Marlins] probably felt they were building toward something. They felt at least as good about their young rotation — maybe better — than the Yankees do today. But after that season, none of the youngsters have been the same, as they have coped with injury or a serious plummet in their effectiveness. In many ways, this is the only serious matter that remains between Loria and Girardi. At times, Loria has sniped that Girardi was most responsible for the ramifications for Florida's pitchers. Girardi has never publicly rebutted any direct salvo hurled from the Marlins front office, but he has defended his handling of that young staff, saying he took great care not to abuse t

The Florida Marlins are a peculiar franchise indeed. The Marlins were added in 1993 when Major League Baseball expanded, and it only took them 5 seasons to record their first World Series championship. Shortly after, they disbanded the entire squad with an offseason 'fire sale.' This practice would soon become the modus operandi for the Florida organization as they re-tooled for another playoff appearance which led to their second World Series victory coming 6 seasons later. Then...promptly breaking up the squad again. So that's the short of it. Active offseason with impressive signings, instant success, then goodbye...here's a bucket of balls. Thanks for the memories.During the tumultuous history of the club, however, there have been many great players taking the field -- if only for a sho
Looking at five key players for the Marlins, and yes, most of them are the putative centerfielders.
Let's start with the CF situation. I could discuss five players just in terms of contenders for the CF job. As of the latest depth charts at MLB.com, here are the contenders, in order as they are listed:
Cameron Maybin There is no way he hits and there is no way he is ready. The Marlins are
Reported By Stephen RhodesBecause of some quirks in the early regular season, the Florida Marlins are leaning towards utilizing a 4-man rotation for the short-term; because of of-days on April 3 and 8, the team will probably not need a fifth starter until April 13. Which could be a good thing for the Marlins as 2 of their projected 4 starters are nursing minor injuries; the 2 pitchers in question, Scott Olsen and Sergio Mitre, may not be ready for the beginning of the 2008 season as Olsen is recovering from left shoulder tendinitis and Mitre is struggling with tightness in his right forearm muscle. When the Marlins' season opens, they plan to use 12 pitchers - 4 starters and 8 relievers; some bullpen spots appear solid but there's unresolved questions about their rotation. Mark Hendrickson
So Bartolo Colon is on his best behaviour, saying all the right things, and acting like a model citizen. He even pitched a very good 1st bullpen session on Monday morning, throwing 42 pitches to Doug Mirabelli under the watchful eye of pitching coach John Farrell who had this to say: “For not being on [...]
The Marlins are looking to put together a cheer squad of fat guys who can boogie. Tryouts are coming soon for the cheer team, which has been dubbed the Manatees. Real manatees are 1,200-lb. "sea cows" which aren't very coordinated. The Marlins, however, want Manatees who are considerably more graceful -- the rotund gentlemen will be judged on their dancing abilities as they attempt a choreographed routine. The Mantees, who will only get game tickets and bragging rights for busting their moves, are not the first chubby-guy drill team in U.S. pro sports -- that distinction is held by the Chicago Bulls' Matadors. No other way to put it. How has this team lost nine straight games to the stinkin' Marlins? Who the hell is Todd Linden? Or Alejandro De Aza? And how can a group of seven no-name relievers shut down a previously smoking-hot Cubs lineup?
Baseball is quirky like that. For more proof, look at the Mets, who were just swept by the Nationals at home. Hilarious that for the Cubs' recent struggles, it is they who have the biggest lead among all NL races right now. Thanks to Ned Yost choosing retaliation over a pennant race, the Cubs now have a magic number of three.
And that can be reduced even more today, as the Cubs look to avoid the sweep behind Steve Trachsel, of all people. Discount the fact that he hasn't pitched in exactly two weeks, or that he has a 4.74 ERA and 7-10 record. I've hit the time machine so that this Trachsel shows up.
For the Marlins, it's Scott Olsen (9-15, 5.88 ERA). It's safe to say Olsen is a bit of a loose cannon. For instance,
Olsen received a black eye la
Where will you go, IALOHO readers?
Decisions, decisions. As we are amidst the last week of the season, it seems it's time for you to choose your destiny, as Mortal Kombat used to instruct.
If you're of the opinion that the Cubs are going to get this done, no worries whatsoever, head on over to Confidence Island, where happy thoughts and blue skies await. Here they scoff at things like postseason odds and magic numbers and are only worried about what jersey to wear come October baseball at Wrigley. The mojitos are served by Carl with a smile, Abe is grilling up the sausages like The King can only do and the sounds of Bob Marley and the Beastie Boys fill the air.
For those who have that sinking feeling like they've seen this before, the Pessimist Pub is the place to drown your sorrows. The TVs sometimes show replays of Leon Durham's boot and Bartman's gaffe, among other things. Most discussion revolves around the past, topics such that usually start with the two words "What if?" Th
Tonight's game is on WCIU, so if you get to see it, congratulations. If not, hang out with us here at LOHO, as we promise to give you a better idea of what's going on than Len and Bob do. Or at least we promise to make you laugh.
Playing the Marlins always stirs up all kinds of traumatic memories. With us so close to heading back to the postseason, tonight's match up promises to make my perpetual tummy ache that much worse. So, if you find unpleasant memories causing those butterflies to rise to the surface at any point during the game, just remember this: They gave us Derrek Lee for Hee Sop Choi. Tonight we send our rock, Ted Lilly (15-7, 3.78), to the hill against "The One That Got Away (and then got a DUI)," Dontrelle Willis (9-15, 5.32). And if you need something else to make you feel better down the strech, try this on for size: Jason Marquis has a better record, ERA and WHIP than Dontrelle Willis. I know, I can't believe it either.
IF all else fails, take a gander at this:
The Jaunt considers the many promotions and giveaways at sporting events throughout the season, and hand-picks the best of the week. MLB - Florida Marlins - Dolphin StadiumSunday, September 23 vs. New York Mets, 1:05 p.m.- Mermaids Calendar Poster (1st 10,000 Fans). As part of the team's Fan Appreciation Weekend, the first 10,000 fans will be proud owners of Major League Baseball's first dance team with the hot; bikini-clad vixens serving as the backdrop for next year's calendar dates. Forget the "first" part. 10,000 fans for the total attendance would be lofty enough for a franchise playing in front of less people than when I'm singing in front of my mirror. However, this promotion -- if any -- is a good way to entice the masses. Pictured below are the 2007 Marlins Mermaids sporting shirts that read "You Gotta Be Here" across their chests...now that would be a way more inviting promotion, but still...
Florida Marlins Pitcher Scott Olsen was arrested early Saturday and charged with driving under the influence, resisting an officer with violence, and fleeing and eluding a police officer. He was booked at the Miami-Dade County Jail and released on $11,000 bond. Olsen was at the stadium before Saturday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, but would not comment on the arrest saying that there was a legal process going on, and that it would not be right to comment. The Marlins released a statement saying they would let the legal system run it's course, but that as an organization "we take this very seriously and are extremely disappointed,". Olsen was spotted by police at 3:40 AM driving 48 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. The officer put on his lights and tried to pull him over, but Olsen kept on driving going through a stop sign. He proceeded to pull into his driveway at his residence in Aventura, a suburb of Miami. He then left the car, and sat down in a plastic chair in his front yard, while th

Trivia question: Who was the No. 5 starter on Opening Day 2004, one of the many times Mark Prior got hurt?
Answer: this suave senor.
That's right, kids, it's Sir Sergio! Back to face his former team. Basically, Mitre was the '03/04 version of Angel Guzman, where the Cubs brass couldn't figure out whether they wanted him to be a starter or reliever, so he had to do both. Then in 2005, he was up and down more than Britney Spears' and Lindsay Lohan's toxicology levels. Let's just say he knew the trip from Iowa to Chicago really well. In the offseason, Mitre was traded to the Marlins (along with two other pitchers) for Juan Pierre.
Mitre seems to have found a small groove with the Marlins this year, at 2-2 and with a pretty decent 1.89 ERA, well below his career of 5.07 (I know, I know, small sample size and all that jazz).
Trying to help the Cubs avoid the sweep (ugh) tonight is Ted Lilly, who, if you recall, got off the hook last Friday after the Cubs rallied with seven runs in t
You are now witnessing a "Wow, I'm really hungover. . . actually, I think I may still be drunk. . . Oh sh*t! It's 11:00 and I have to do the game thread" diary. My apologies in advance. Here we go:
Ahhhhh. If only. (Okay, it's a bass, not a marlin, but you get the idea. Incidentally, late last night the conversation around my patio table turned to a play-by-play discusssion of the 8th inning of Game 6. That's probably what ultimately led to my state of extreme inebriation.)
So today Byung-Hyun Kim (2-2, 7.02) takes on the elfin Sean Marshall (0-1, 2.57). I don't really know who Kim is, but he's only lasted 5 innings in each of his last two starts. If we can't get a guy with a 7.02 ERA who can't make it out of the 6th, we're in a world of hurt.
As for Marshall, well, we all know how his first start this season went. He looked pretty fantastic, save for one bad pitch. As has been the case so often this season, the offense and pitching just couldn't sync up, which was a real
The Florida Marlins are offering fans the chance to attend an after-game picnic on the field following their May 6 afternoon game against San Diego. Dinner on the Diamond provides fans with the unique opportunity to experience a casual picnic with Marlins players, coaches, broadcasters, executives, Billy The Marlin and the MarlinsMermaids on the outfield grass at Dolphin Stadium. Fans of all ages will be able to enjoy dinner, drinks, interactive areas and live entertainment.Casual Picnic? Ain't nothing casual about slinky; sexy mermaids. I've always had a thing for mermaids. If I were half-fish and half-human, I would have quite the blisters on my fins thinking about these precious creatures. Of course, this is just a dream of mine -- and like most hot and steamy dreams -- the thrill gets interrupted by some random ugly image out of nowhere. In this case -- it's Shrek! That's right. All is well and good, then a big; ugly ogre in a toga shows up and all of your fantasies get washed
The Florida Marlins have apparently learned nothing from the adventures of one Pacman Jones. When they say it rains every day in Miami, I always thought they were referring to the weather. Perhaps not.Marlins open hearts, wallets at strip club (Post)The buzz at the brand-spanking new Solid Gold Palm Beach is that the ladies there are going to miss their Florida Marlins, now that spring training in Jupiter is over and the regular season started Monday. And not just because they behaved like true gentlemen. For at least two nights a week in March, bar staff tells Page Two, star pitcher Dontrelle Willis, described as the ringleader, second baseman Dan Uggla and others were known to swing by the Riviera Beach joint and shower the gals with dollar bills until 3 a.m.Check me on this, but didn't Dontrelle just get a DUI? Oh yeah, he did. Good to see it hasn't hampered his lifestyle any."There'd be, like, $3,000 in singles on the table," said waitress Nicole Spelling. "When they liked someone
Nationals vs. Marlins - April 3rdI also do some blogging for the Washington Nationals for mvn.com, and here's a report on the Nationals Game I attended last night...Last night, I attended the second game of the season for the Nationals, as they lost to the Florida Marlins again 9-3. It was a perfect night for baseball, but the crowd of 20,000 plus was substantially smaller than the crowd that witnessed Opening Day.Once again, in the first few innings, the Nationals dug themselves a hole and it was too deep to dig out on Tuesday.Shawn Hill got hit hard as gave up four earned runs in five or so innings. The Nationals defense looked woeful as the infield made several botched plays, and the Marlins made them pay for it. Dmitri Young, the first baseman, made a fatal error in the field that allowed two runs to come in.Kory Casto, the highly touted prospect in the organization made his debut, and singled in the middle of the game for his first major league hit.The Marlins starting pitcher Sc
Nationals vs. Marlins - Opening DayThe Washington Nationals first game of the season did not go as expected, sadly. Although the weather was picture perfect and fans of all ages were giddy for baseball, the Florida Marlins whooped up on the Nationals 9-2. Fans were treated to music before the game, the stadium was decked in red, white and blue, and there was a dramatic flyover with 2 F-18 military aircraft. Dontrelle Willis looked solid and earned the win, while John Patterson only pitched a little more than 3 innings, giving up 6 runs. In the game, Miguel Cabrera and Dan Uggla hit monster home runs for the Marlins, but Nationals shortstop Christian Guzman and Outfielder Nook Logan left the game with injuries. However, Ryan Zimmerman looked impressive, had two hits and made an impressive play at third where he threw a runner out, while basically sitting down. In the end, perhaps the Ryan Zimmerman and company can beat the doomsday predictions by the pundits and experts throug
Just got back from RFK and caught the Nationals take on the Marlins. The Nationals lost, but it was a wonderful day at the ballpark -- picture perfect.I'll have pictures uploaded in a bit...That being said, the O's season begins right now! I'm watching the game at this moment!
The Marlins announced a trade of Yusmeiro Petit for Jorge Julio, who will become the team's closer. Julio is a sleeper at the closer position in deeper leagues. Petit will have to work his way back through the minors as a starter or in the D-Backs' bullpen.Source: CBS SportsLine.com
Marlins RP Henry Owens pitched two scoreless innings Sunday against the Nationals. He allowed two hits and a walk, while striking out three. Owens has now made six relief appearances this spring totaling nine innings and has yet to allow a run to cross the plate. Owens -- a Miami native -- appeared in three games with the Mets last season, plus went 2-2 with 20 saves for Double-A Binghamton. It is believed he is the leader to take over the vacant closer's job in Florida and has done nothing yet to show otherwise. Continue to track his progress, but he could be a huge sleeper in Fantasy leagues if he wins the closer's job. The other top candidate for the Marlins closer role is Matt Lindstrom, who has made six relief appearances totaling 7 1/3 innings, and has allowed just one earned run for a 1.23 ERA. He pitched one scoreless inning Sunday against the Nationals to earn his first save of the spring. He allowed two hits while striking out one. Lindstrom complements his fastball w

Italy votes to keep fans out of arenas (AP)
The Italian Cabinet approved measures Wednesday that will keep fans out of soccer stadiums until security precautions are met.
The decree includes "the explicit indication that in stadiums that are not up to code, they will play behind closed doors," Interior Ministry undersecretary Marco Minniti said.
Man, can you imagine something like that ever
In Southern Florida, the outlook for baseball in 2006 was grim as the Marlins were supposed to dead on arrival. However, the young team under the guidance of Joe Girardi had other plans. The Marlins got off to a slow start, which most of the baseball world predicted; therefore, they were not supposed to be a contender. The team, filled with a plethora of young talent, came together and broke out in a big way. In light of a payroll that was less than what a few players make in the league, the Marlins nothing short of shocked the baseball establishment with their success last season. The questions right now are will anyone on the team regress, and will they be contenders this season?Well, to start of with, a few changes were made in the off-season; however, none bigger than the release of Joe Girardi as manager of the team due to personal issues with team owner Jeff Loria. He was replaced by Fredi Gonzalez, who hopes to have the same success with the Marlins that his predecessor had. Durin
