LONDON - Most European stock markets ended lower Thursday, as the European Central Bank and the Bank of England kept interest rates on hold as they flag up inflation concerns in a period of record oil prices. The pan-European Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index closed a fraction of a percentage point lower to 329.28, with banks across Europe lower as the major central banks held rates unchanged. In London, shares of U.K. mortgage lender HBOS fell 1.2% and Barclays declined 2.5%, lower after the Bank of England kept rates on hold at 5%, a move that generated mild disappointment for investors hoping for a rate cut to shore up an ailing housing market. In compiling the list, Forbes said, “The hardest places to sell homes are those with falling prices and a large inventory of unsold homes.” The magazine, which examined markets all over the country, concluded that Florida has the most markets that are really in the doldrums. Several cities there are overbuilt, saddled with lousy loans and flat sales. Here are the 10 markets where Forbes says the sales opportunities are the most challenging:1. Miami 2. Orl
The Fed appeared to signal a pause in its easing cycle Wednesday when stating ‘The substantial easing of monetary policy to date, combined with ongoing measures to foster market liquidity, should help to promote moderate growth over time and to mitigate risks to economic activity’. Of course the downside risks to growth are still highlighted, as they should, but the Fed’s policy of aggressively cutting rates in recent months has failed to translate into lower borrowing costs for consumers while the credit crunch persisted. But for now, the Fed would appear to have adopted a ‘wait and see’ policy and this will have implications for currency markets a

And IShares MSCI E.M.I.F. (EEM) for emerging markets. You can see there is only slight difference in P/E valuation.P/E ratio:EFA 11,5EEM 12,8Someone can say EEM is not real ETF to measure emerging market performance. That's partially true. More than half (53%) holdings are listed on US markets as ADR. In addition to that big share is from already developed countries like South Korea, Taiwan. The important thing is to compare EPS growth. From attached chart you can see that estimated earnings growth for 2008 is by 4,6 % faster than for EFA. Moreover both ETF are traded currently with premium against NAV.

Luckily a friend forwarded me this video which is intended to be a satirical take on the situation, but is scarily poignant. Bank of America recently rolled out a money market savings account paying a higher interest rate than their four month CDs. What that tells me is that Bank of America is counting on further interest rate reductions from the Federal Reserve.Perhaps now that B of A owns Countrywide, they have an ever better crystal ball for seeing the extent the subprime shakedown. They are casting their bet that the Fed will continue to drop rates. Where are you casting yours?
