“Market Share Isn’t Quite as Important as You Think”by Michael Aaron GallagherMarket share isn’t quite as important as you think it is. From the moment you start feeling the pressure of competition in business, you can’t help but notice that there’s a pie and your piece looks smaller than everyone else’s.As a New Yorker, I live in one of the most economically depressed states in the country, with high unemployment, low occupancy rates, cities suffering from “brain drain,” and high property taxes, sales taxes, and income taxes. When I meet another marketing consultant, I can feel the tension in the room. They act defensively, like they are going to lose something if they aren’t careful. Are they worried about losing their clients? Do they feel threatened that there is so

Nokia announced its financial results for 2007 and reported that it has reached 40 percent of the global market share, a goal that the company hadfor some time but never managed to achieve it. This was possible thanks to the excellent sales from the fourth quarter of 2007, when a total of 133.5 million Nokia devices were sold.According to the press release from the Nokia website, the total number of mobile devices shipped by the company world-wide in 2007 raises to 437.1 million, which represents a new annual volume record. This is an increase of 25.8% when compared to the 374.5 million units sold in 2006. Furthermore, the 2007 net sales have reached a value of 51.1 billion Euro, with 23% more than the net sales from 2006.Besides the overall increased sales, which sure make Nokia officials

Windows XP lost 8.39%, Mac OS increased its market share by 3.15% while Linux increased by 0.26% its share of the OS market share in the same time period. At the end of December 2007, the share of major OS's are as follows:
Apple’s iPhone keeps setting new records: only 5 short months since its launch it became not only the most rising Google search term, but also the most popular mobile browser online accounting for 0.09% of all internet users, according to a new report for November 2007 from Net Applications.
While this number might seem ridiculously low, its closest competitor, Windows CE, accounted for only 0.06% of the market share, having been launched years ago and having a humongous quantitative advantage in number of handsets sold.
And anyone that used the iPhone’s Safari browser for at least a little while could probably understand why something like this is happening. It will certainly be interesting to see what the market share will be in a year from now.

In the face of competition from Internet Explorer 7 and now Apple’s Safari, the Mozilla Corporation intends to re-think its marketing strategy in order to further boost the market share of its Firefox web browser. According to a report by VNUnet, Mozilla hopes that Firefox will reach a 30% market share by June 2008.
To reach this goal, the organization wants to tweak the Firefox icon so its purpose is clearer and also position it more prominently on the Windows desktop or quick launch bar. Additionally, the prompt that asks users whether they want to make Firefox their default browser will be revamped so it looks “nicer.” Those changes are meant to make users who download Firefox likelier to keep using the browser. Right now, Mozilla statistics suggest only half the users who download Firefox end up installing it, and only half of those become active users.

Apple (AAPL) is up $3.77 today on an upgrade from Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. He believes the combination of the iPod’s future development and the iPhone has tremendous potential (quite possibly the most obvious statement on the street). Ultimately, Gene suggested that Apple’s price target should be raised to $205 per share, one of the highest on the street.
Also, there’s an interesting number that hit the street a couple of days ago. IDC released market share numbers for the top worldwide computer brands.
“Apple’s 2nd Quarter 2007 U.S. market share was up to 5.6% of U.S. shipments. This tied Apple in 3rd place with Gateway for U.S. market share for this quarter. Dell and HP were well ahead at 28.4% and 23.6% respectively. Apple did not rank in the top 5 vendors for worldwide sales. The 5.6% U.S. market share represents an increase from 4.8% in the year-ago (2006) quarter, which was an increase from 4.4% in the Q2 2005 quarter. ” (SOURCE)

Is the advertising of wireless carriers based strictly on what carrier spends the most (on media placement) rather than a spiffy new creative campaign? No, not fully is the market share of a carrier based only on media buys....call failure, attractive customer service, coverage and rates have an impact-but what about when they are all offering the same or are experiencing similar growth patterns...it may come down to media and how much can you buy...Speaking to a colleague earlier this week brought this question to the forefront of my thoughts for a few minutes. Sprint has the third place ranking in market share, just over 20% I believe. Ad spending; well thats third place as well.......per Ad Age. Case and point with AT & T and Verizon too; Verizon respectively spends 1 billion more
PARIS/HELSINKI — — Nokia [NOK-N], the world’s top mobile handset maker, lifted its market share outlook for the second quarter on Monday, saying it expected to have more than 36 per cent of the global cellphone market. The Finnish firm is benefiting from growing demand in emerging markets, like China and India, where it has a strong position.
Shares in Nokia were up 4.6 per cent at 19.26 euros at 1:19 p.m. GMT. It had earlier forecast that market share would remain at the 36 per cent level.
Nokia said in a statement it expected its phone shipments in April-June to be positively impacted as excess device inventory in the market — which held back its market share at the start of the year — had sufficiently cleared.
Nokia’s lead on the global market over closest rival Motorola [MOT-N]grew to its widest in years in the beginning of 2007 as the U.S. firm’s handset prices plunged when it tried to hold market share against competition from Nokia.

Google dominates the US search engine market with 64% market shareInternet giant Google continues to dominate in the search engine market in the United States. The latest reports would disappoint Microsoft massively considering the launch of Vista has not shown any improvement in the market share of their Live search engine.Internet metrics firm Hitwise claims that Google powered just around 64% of U.S. searches. This is up from 58% in March 2006.In comparison Yahoo, Microsoft, and Ask.com had a disappointing market share of 22%, 9%, and 3% in the US market. Incidentally, all of these players have lost the market share compared to the results from last year.Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise added in the report: “Google’s growth shows no signs of slowing. This is based on my article, “How to get visitors to your website without spending a penny” which you can read below.
As a small business I have to find ways to get visitors to my site without a large advertising spend. However while I may not spend money, I certainly put in a lot of time and effort!
1 You need to find a niche angle, something that makes you stand out from other similar websites. Every industry is very competitive and you need something to get your site noticed. I feature less well known destinations in Europe, like Lake Iseo in northern Italy, then I can come in the first few listed on a natural search (as supposed to a sponsored or paid for result). If I promote well known destinations like Florence, I will probably turn up on page 100 and nobody will find me.

Toyota's stock hit an all-time high in trading in Tokyo overnight.Small wonder. The largest Japanese car company watched its operating profits rise 44% in the most recently announced quarter. Toyota said that sales in Europe and the US of fuel-efficient cars like the Camry helped its results. Of course, Detroit relies on SUVs and pick-ups for most of its profits. These have fallen out of favor as fuel prices rise.Leaving aside the fact that at $215 billion, Toyota's market cap is as large as the next four most valuable car companies combined and that the company is upping its sales forecasts for the year. The most frightening announcements for the Big Three is that Toyota will start producing and pushing it Tundra pick-up, a move directed at the heart of Detroit's most lucrative model lines and that it will begin to market additional fuel-efficient cars like its Scion.Toyota will increase production by over 500,000 units next year as it opens new plants in countries like China and R

As GM and Ford entered '07, they swore on a stack of Kelly blue books that they were getting out of the business of churning out hundreds of thousands of crap cars for rental fleets and other bulk buyers. Every month, the domestics blamed their lowered market share and declining sales on this brave decision to turn their backs on churn and burn. Meanwhile, Chrysler did anything and everything to move the damn metal. Prior to the Daimler divorce, the automaker practiced epic channel stuffing (a.k.a. sending cars to dealers and abandoned airfields). And now it can be revealed that Chrysler is picking-up its Motown competitors' fleet slack on a similar scale. Last month, Chrysler told the world its sales had fallen by just 2.1 percent-- a victory of sorts in a U.S. market that declined by around three percent. Yes but-- CNN reports that Chrysler sent its dealers an internal memo revealing that retail sales fell by 16.5 percent. "In early October, when Chrysler reported its Se

As the latest GM Death Watch predicted, the GM apologists are getting warmed-up. Note to The Big 2.8's PR departments: hire the Detroit News' headline writer. Better yet, don't. Why risk losing such a public champion? After all, there is no evidence that GM, Ford and Chrysler ARE successfully clinging to their U.S. market share. Or WILL cling. And while you're wondering who to thank for cutting the words "try to" from the headline, it's best to keep scribe Sharon Terlep happy. Ms. T starts, helpfully enough, by moving the goal posts: "But preventing foreign-based rivals from stealing more buyers will be crucial to putting Detroit's automakers in a good position once sales eventually rebound." And then she trots out Michael Robinet, vice president of
