      Failed Seattle Mariners GM Fired
The Mariners, who have far and away the worst record in the league (24-45), fired General Manager Bill Bavasi today. The Mariners management have made the worst decisions of any other team the past five years, and it looks like this decision came a few years too late. It will take some painful seasons to repair the utter mess he has made with their club.

Rocking & Rolling; The Mariners On The Docket Out West...
Despite the dire predictions and doom and gloom of some in the local & national press, as well as others, perhaps even myself -- the Orioles are playing well.In light of yesterday's 7-1 loss to the Evil Empire, Baltimore is playing some exciting baseball and on Friday and Saturday, when they won, the offense came through and did the little things right. You can't also discount what the bullpen has done, especially, Jim Johnson, who has been a huge surprise, a good Daniel Cabrera on Friday, and Brian Buress' gutsy performance on Saturday night.Roberts may be in a slump, but Luke Scott is still hot, Jones is starting to come around at the plate, Mora is still a bunting machine, and Markakis is the "man".I'm still enjoying the ride waiting for a fall, but so far so good. Better late than never, but Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Edwin Jackson seems to be finally paying dividends, especially after he lost 15 games last season. Jackson and a reliever combined for a three-hitter, allowing the Rays to shut out the Seattle Mariners, 7-0 Thursday at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay was led by Akinori Iwamura, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base while Jonny Gomes went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and 2 runs scored; Carl Crawford and Mike DiFelice also had 2 hits each, with Crawford scoring 2 runs and Di Felice batting in 3 RBIs. The Seattle Mariners did just that when, according to Gregg Bell of the Associated Press, the team released underwhelming starting pitcher Horacio Ramirez; the Mariners got Ramirez from the Atlanta Braves for reliever Rafael Soriano before last season. Ramirez would then proceed to post an 8-7 record with an astronomical 7.16 ERA in 20 starts before being shut down for nearly 2 months because of a sore shoulder.Last month's trade for former Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Erik Bedard and the acqusition of free-agent starter Carlos Silva left Ramirez in the unenviable position of battling for a long reliever/spot starter posi

When the teams that lose out on the Johan Santana sweepstakes decide to move on the next target, they'll set their eyes on Erik Bedard. Now, there's a new player in the Bedard sweepstakes -- the Seattle Mariners. From the News Tribune (Seattle): The Mariners officially acknowledged they were out of the run for Johan Santana, and turned their attention to another coveted pitcher – Baltimore’s Erik Bedard.Bedard isn’t nearly the marquee name Santana is, but he’s a 29-year-old left-hander with a 40-35 record and a 3.83 lifetime earned run average. Unfortuantely for Seattle, he’s hardly a secret.Among the teams already pursuing Bedard are the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets, and the team that finishes second in the Santana derby is almost certain to join this fray.As with Santana, Bedard will come dear – Orioles general manager Andy MacPhail wants to remake his roster by moving Bedard and shortstop Miguel Tejada. 19 October 2007 (Science) - Michael Balter reviews the latest scientific opinions about the nature of early human seafaring, covering when the earliest boats were made, migration into Australia, and the time period over which the Sahul and Sunda shelves were colonised. It seems to be that a major problem with sifting through the evidence is that much of where the evidence would theoretically lie is now underwater. Sea levels in Southeast Asia were very much lower as recently as 6,000 years ago (see Sahul Time for an idea of how much land mass is now underwater), which would make former coastal sites - where we expect to find most of the archaeological material - inaccessible with our current technology. The huge difference of sea levels in the last 50,000 years presents special barriers and repercussions to our understanding of the prehistory of the region - something that I’m beginning to encounter with my own research. Here’s what Willie Ballgame had to say about a trip to China (where maybe the M’s can leave him there). “I asked our players union, and we’re one of four or five teams they’re considering. Nothing’s been finalized,” Mariners player rep Willie Bloomquist said. “If it happens, great, a new experience. If not, nothing lost. The biggest issue is the travel there and back, with all the traveling we already do.” For the most part it looks as though most of the teams involved wouldn’t mind going over there for a game or two even with the hard travel. Yes, the headline reads like a narrative cartoon word balloon. But an incident involving the Mariner Moose and Red Sox fielder, Coco Crisp could have been a serious issue. The Moose was starting his routine that involved the ATV in front of the Red Sox dugout. As Crisp took the field, the Moose pulled forward and clipped the Boston outfielder on the leg. Crisp fell to the ground, but quickly regained his footing and went on his way to his position in center field. "It hit me, not flush, but it hit me," Crisp good-naturedly explained. "I didn't see it. I just heard it and I jumped back. I'm sure he didn't mean to take me out."Obviously this brings up the story of the Tennessee Titans mascot, T-Rac, and his calculated golf cart homicide attempt on Adrian McPherson, then-Quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. The Mariners will be paying Ichiro for a looooong time
When Ichiro signed his 5 year/90 million dollar contract last week, a lot of people crapped their pants and some argued that it was going to ruin baseball. But it turns out that those numbers aren't quite what they seem. Suzuki, MVP of last week's All-Star Game, gets a $5 million signing bonus and annual salaries of $17 million from 2008-12 under the terms of last Friday's deal. Seattle will pay $12 million in salary each year and defer $5 million per season at 5.5 percent interest. Suzuki, who turns 33 in October, will receive the money in annual installments each Jan. 30 starting with the year after his retirement from the major leagues.Because of the deferred money, the average annual value of the contract is discounted to $16.1 million under the provisions of baseball's collective bargaining agreement. In addition, he gets a housing allowance of $32,000 next year, an increase of $1,000 from this season, and the amount will rise by $1,000 each year. He also will be pr

Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners
It’s only fitting - for the first blog post here after the All Star Break - that the featured player would be Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners. The Kasugai, Japan born Ichiro was this year’s All Star Game MVP, and the only player in MLB history to ever hit an “in the park” home run in an All Star Game. The ever humble Ichiro admitted he thought of leaving the ballpark after playing in the All Star Game because he had a reservation at a restaurant, but he said he was told to stick around as he might be picked MVP. Ichiro has been ripping it up this year with .359 batting average, 39 RBI’s and 5 home runs. The dynamic center fielder is equally talented out in the field playing defense, stealing bases to advance his team or just stepping up to the plate to lead his team to victory. Currently in his seventh season with the Mariners, Ichiro carries an impressive .333 career batting average with 398 RBI’s and 258 stolen bases. He has also won six str

Sometimes, in life, things turn out better than you thought they would. Other times, they START turning out better than you thought they would, but quickly revert to what you thought they would be in the first place. Such is the case with today's hero, Jason Marquis. Remember how we all thought he was going to suck? But then he was actually good in April, so we were surprised? But then in May, he kind of sucked again? So yeah, like that. Whether he likes it or not, the way he's pitched of late has made Marquis the underdog in a lot of games. And there's nothing I like better than a good Underdog Episode. That said. . .away we go. What does the future hold in store for our hero?  Will Marquis (5-3, 3.01) suck it up and revert back to April form, or is our hero doomed to a skyrocketing ERA and a future filled with mockings at the hands of Cubs bloggers with nothing but time on their hands? Get your coffee and umbrellas ready, because the storm from the Pacific Northwest is headed our way (actually, they're probably already here) and they're bringing this guy with them: How good is Ichiro you ask, young grasshopper? There's been a lot of talk this season about him slowing down and not picking up the ball as well. Some say he's lost a step, some say he doesn't have the bat speed that he used to. What monumental drop-off in production has caused everyone to jump on the "Ichiro is declining" bandwagon? Quick Hits: O's Snap Losing Skid; Birds Down Mariners 9-5
Sorry for the delay everyone! Right now, I am in Washington D.C. covering the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals. The Baltimore Orioles finally got a win and broke out a their five game losing skid yesterday afternoon on the left coast, as they beat the Seattle Mariners 9-5. There was no bullpen implosion today, and the Orioles bats took over after the fifth inning. The pendulum finally swung in the way of the black and orange, as Jay Gibbons broke out of a deep slump and the Orioles broke out and finally got into the win column. Daniel Cabrera who has been mired with bouts of inconsistency as a starting pitcher, started off wild in this game, but settled down as he pitched 8 innings, and gave up 4 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 4. Same Sh*t, Different Day: The Game Last Night, O's Lose 5-4 to the Mariners; The Bullpen Coughs Up Another One...
As we head into June, we have had many recurring themes – mainly, one run games, starting pitchers doing their job (albeit, not going deep into games), and then the bullpen coughing up a lead.It happened on Sunday. It happened on Monday. It happened again last night. The Baltimore Orioles lost another close game to the Mariners on the left coast by a score of 5-4.The losing streak is now at five straight.Brian Burres pitched a little more than five innings, and only gave up a run after throwing 111 pitches. He’s done and well in the spot start role, and (should not be taken out unless he falters). The high pitch count scares me and Burres could be a lot more economical when he’s on the mound, but let’s not mess what worksThen, the fun began.Baltimore’s favorite relief pitcher, Danys Baez (as to why he was in the game, God help us), pitched 1/3 of an inning, walked two and gave up three earned runs. Well, we've come to the end of the road, as Boyz II Men once sang...of spring training that is. And frankly, as a collective group, we couldn't be happier. Time for some real baseball to start, and stop seeing people whose names no one has a clue about (as was the case last night with Federico Baez, who was called "No. 9" for 10 minutes). After the Cubs' bats put on quite the display last night, Chicago squares off once again with Seattle in Las Vegas today. Given the fact that players have had access to gambling, free drinks and awesome strip clubs in between the two games, don't expect the starters to play that much today, if at all. Taking the mound today is Mr. Marquis, who has one more shot to win over most of the IALOHO community. Personally, I'm giving him at least until the middle of May before I start cursing him. For Seattle, it's former Brave Horacio Ramirez, who came over to the Mariners in the trade for Rafael Soriano. Ramirez has fallen off since his rookie year in

Running Game Thread; Cubs vs. Mariners; 9:15 p.m. CST: Piniella's Nine
Just be glad this group isn't the starting infield. Not much unlike this movie, the Cubs are also on a mission: trying to steal the N.L. Central away by elaborate plots and smoke and mirrors (read: the pitching staff). And who needs Clooney...we've got our own Danny Ocean right here. Tell me this isn't a snapshot of a true leader. Well, guys and gals, my request to go to Vegas and do a field report fell silent on the ears of the power that be at IALOHO, so we'll be settling for the next best option: live blogging along with heavy drinking/sedation. Should be fun, especially with the late start time (10:15 out here on the East Coast). Feel free to take bets on if/when I'll pass out. You'll know you're right when one of my inning recaps is like this: Colvin flies out to left Izturadfafadjfjdfdjfjfjfjhdfjhhhhssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Taking the hill for the Cubs tonight is Theodore Roosevelt Lilly, who seems to be pitching every time I do one of these. In protest, I'm n

Felix named Mariners Opening Day starter
When right-hander Felix Hernandez walked off the mound on Friday afternoon, he became the answer to a future Mariners trivia question. On April 2 at Safeco Field, the 20-year-old star in the making will become the youngest Opening Day starting pitcher in franchise history -- five years younger than Mike Moore was in 1985, when he made the first of his three Opening Day starts. Manager Mike Hargrove made it official halfway through the sixth inning on Friday when he told Hernandez that he would be the Mariners' Opening Day starter against the Athletics. "He told me, 'Good outing,' and I said, 'Thank you,'" Hernandez said. "Then he told me, 'Do that on Opening Day.'" Hernandez, who posted a 12-14 record and 4.52 ERA a year ago in his first big-league season, shed more than 20 pounds during the offseason and reported to camp in terrific shape. He has been dominant at times -- like the first two innings he pitched on Friday, when none of the first six batters got the ball out of

GoDaddy.com's Gamethread 3/19: Cubs vs Mariners 3:05 CST AND Brewers vs Cubs 3:05 EST
Well,Well, I hope the weekend off has refreshed you, as I suspect many of you are just now starting to sober up from your St, Patrick's Day weekend.  This thread is brought to you in part by Go Daddy.com.. Which is just a cheap excuse to post this: The new official spokesperson of the Cubsfan2883's Game Thread, Candace Michaels The Cubs play two games today, one against the Mariners and one against the Brewers.  The race for the fifth spot will hopefully be a little clearer after today's games as Wade Miller will take the hill for the North Siders.  In the other, and btw far more interesting game, The Cubs will face off against the Brewers.  Why is a game against the Brewers that much more interesting? Because my heros and yours, Sean's Marshall and Gallagher will both take the hill for the Cubbies.  Gallagher will get his first Spring Training Start for the Cubs.. Marshall is set to pitch his first game in relief.

      Tigers vs. Mariners
On Labor Day my husband and I surprised our two boys with a trip to Comerica Park in Detroit. On the long roadtrip my oldest son guessed every sport except baseball, which kept us from having to ruin the surprise before we pulled into the parking lot across from the park entrance. When we finally told them we were going to watch the Tigers play baseball they were all smiles. The smiles even

Can the Pacific Northwest Rise Up? Seattle Mariners 2007 Season Preview
The Seattle Mariners in the early part of the decade were the class of the American League West & always counted on being contenders, however, they have struggled in the past few years. In 2006, the team improved from their 2005 campaign, but they still finished in last place for the third year in a row. With the development of the young talent, the Mariners inched closer to .500, but were still far from contending. For the upcoming season, quite a few changes were ushered, especially with the pitching corps, but will it be enough to get the Pacific Northwest excited? The team added former Washington Nationals players Jose Guillen, Jose Vidro, along with World Series hero Jeff Weaver, pichers Horacio Ramirez, Chris Reitsma and Miguel Bastista. However, the team lost Gil Meche as he signed a huge deal with the Royals, Eduardo Perez, Joel Pineiro, along with Chris Snelling, Emilino Fruto and Rafael Soriano to trades. The starting pitching will compromise of Jarrod Washburn, Felix Hernandez

Ichiro returning to right field for Seattle Mariners
{mosgoogle right}SEATTLE (AP) -- With his team in huge trouble, Seattle Mariners manager John McLaren decided he's going to start tinkering. His first move: sliding Ichiro Suzuki back into right field.Suzuki was back in his corner outfield spot for the first time since the end of the 2006 season on Monday night when the Mariners, with the worst record in baseball, opened a three-game series agains
