49-year-old Cornelia Turner Mayo was fulfilling her civic duty by taking part in jury duty in Houston, Texas. Cornelia was one of the 20 prospective jurors in a marijuana possession trial. During jury selection, a 45-minute break was called. When the 45 minute break was up, Cornelia was the only one to not return to the courtroom. The judge in the case was about to issue a bench warrant when he received a call that Cornelia was arrested right outside the criminal courthouse. Cornelia was arrested for smoking a joint. All that talk about weed probably gave her a major craving. The judge told The Houston Chronicle, "I've had prospective jurors get lost before, but it never occurred to me that they might be getting ready for a marijuana trial by, allegedly, smoking marijuana."The former juror w

According to Luke Mullins at his U.S. News & World Report blog The Home Front, those people concerned about nefarious activities taking place at the growing number of foreclosed homes across the country might have a point. Here is a simple, yet, controversial question: If someone has used marijuana - even if used for medical reasons - should this prohibit him or her from being considered to be on a transplant list? Hospitals throughout this great nation struggle with this question every day. Timothy Garon (pictured above) is a patient at the University of Washington Medical Center. He has end stage Hepatitis C and, according to this Associated Press story, may be in his final days without a liver transplant. But Garon's been refused a spot on the transplant list, largely because he has used marijuana, even though it was legally approved for medical reasons. "I'm not angry, I'm not mad, I'm just confused," said Garon, lying in his hospital bed a few minutes after a doctor told him the hospital transplant commi

The Rhode Island legislature is proposing the possibility of opening medical marijuana distribution centers so patients who take the drug for medicinal purposes wouldn't have to buy it off the streets, sometimes in dangerous situations and often at a high street market value. The story was reported Wednesday in the Newport Daily News and be found by clicking here. If the legislation passes, Rhode Island would become the third American state to have "centers" that distribute medical marijuana.

First up let's get one thing sorted out; marijuana addiction has no one shot treatment. There is no pot patch and there is no way to wean yourself off slowly. Treatment for marijuana addictions starts and ends in your own mind not with chemicals, substitutes or cure all pills.Marijuana has no chemical within it like nicotine in cigarettes that give the user a physical painful craving for the substance that draws them back. Pot is a different beast as your cravings come from a psychological desire for the drug, a mental want for a smoke usually in response to a trigger in your life that makes you want to escape from reality and achieve that state of being that marijuana takes you to. This is not only physically unhealthy but is a kind of rot in your soul that drains you of your will to achi

In health care there has been a great push towards evidence based medicine to ensure that treatments used are effective and that we don’t waste money on those which are not effective. Republican politicians could learn from this philosophy. I’ve already noted how the Bush administration pushes abstinence based education contrary to the evidence that abstinence-only programs are ineffective. John Tierney posts on a challenge to Republican candidates regarding their views on medical marijuana, and backs up his views on the subject with evidence:
Some of the Republican presidential candidates have dismissed medical marijuana as unnecessary or “too dangerous.” Now they’re being offered $10,000 to come up with the scientific evidence.

While listening to NPR the other day, they mentioned a strange fact. The rate of ‘home-grown’ marijuana busts by police has increased dramatically during the last couple of years. It was speculated that these home marijuana farmers were getting into the ‘biz’ because of their increasing ARM mortgages, and the need for additional funds to cover it.
That got me thinking about an incident that happened in my own neighborhood, literally across the street.
A few years ago, one of the major employers in my area started MAJOR layoffs. People that were used to making six-figure incomes were suddenly shown the door. This had a huge ripple effect throughout the area because most of the people let go were IT workers, which drove the supply up (and the demand down).
The quiet neighbor across the street was one of these layoffees. To add insult to injury, he soon got divorced, and the wife and kids moved away. he started staying in and wasn’t seen very often.

The Netherlands has a pretty easygoing stance on sin. You can buy a woman sitting in her undies in a shop window; go on a marijuana binge culminating in your eating a shipping container of Doritos; and take your bikini top off any damned well where you please.
But the local constabulary would like you to know: the mushrooms are off limits.
That’s the word out of Amsterdam after Gaelle Caroff, a visiting teenager from France, gobbled up some magic mushies, flipped out, and fatally ran off the top of a building.
That alone may be bad enough to get the psychedelic veges banned, but it’s only the latest in a string of mushroom-inspired self-inflicted damage from tourists. On one occasion, a British tourist went crazy in his hotel and started punching windows, while on another, an Icelandic tourist who thought he was being chased, jumped from a balcony and broke both his legs. I know medical marijuana is not, nor should it be, the defining issue of the 2008 presidential election. Miss Macia politely asked John McCain his position on permitting it. Barely were the words out of her mouth before the senator spun on his heels and stalked away. This is another one of those things I find puzzling. There is certainly evidence marijuana has medicinal value. And why wouldn't the old party of states' rights want the federal government to let each state decide for itself whether it wishes to permit disabled and terminally ill patients to use cannabis under a docto

As part of his pretrial release, Vick had agreed to “refrain from use or unlawful possession of a narcotic drug or other controlled substance.” A probation officer (Vick’s, I would imagine), Patricia Locket-Ross, petitioned Judge Henry E. Hudson to impose stricter conditions on Vick on Monday.
Other conditions imposed on Vick include: being restricted to his Virginia home daily from 10 PM to 6 AM; the home confinement will include electronic monitoring at Vick’s

A huge marijuana growing operation has been busted by police in Elk Grove, Sacramento and Galt, which resulted in the arrest of fifteen people. All of the homes link to Realtor Vivian Hoang, because she apparently sold all of the homes that were involved in the operation. Here is a video with more information on this strange story.
Putting aside the matter of alcohol’s legality and marijuana’s illegality, there are some fundamental differences between these 2 substances. There is an extensive body of medical research which demonstrates that very moderate use of alcohol by adults who are able to drink (no history of alcoholism, non-pregnant women, and no other medical conditions which preclude [...]
A 71-year-old woman was arrested on marijuana charges after a chest-high marijuana plant was found in her yard, a plant she said was meant to keep animals away from her backyard.
A sheriff’s deputy saw the marijuana as he drove past Betty Holt Walker’s home previously this month.

So here I am sleeping (finally) and enjoying a wonderful dream where everyone is happy and all of a sudden my mother turns into a monkey! That's right. A MONKEY! Now something in my brain tells me it is not normal for a mother (especially mine!) to turn into a monkey so I slowly wake up and come to some sort of consciousness only to discover that the noise is outside our house and YES it sounds exactly like a monkey. You know the "oo oo oo oo oo WAH WAH" sound they make (Picture Cheetah from Tarzan). So not only did it wake me up but it woke Dan as well and he decides to get up and open the shop to let me sleep in. I asked him to kill the damn bird before he left but evidently he could not find it because shortly after he left it started up again. I covered my ears and got another couple of hours of sleep. This peri-menopause stuff is awful! What is it? God decided that a woman needs to have something to replace the sleep deprivation caused by children so he just adds a hormonal stew
While most view growing marijuana in the context of illicit drug-trade problems and the effect this substance is having on our kids, there are few who see the real problems this is causing our environment.
Sure, there are few ecological issues in a backyard propagation - apart from the dreaded increase in phosphate fertilisers. But the problem escalates when we consider that the bulk of marijuana comes from illegal plantations grown in the most remote forests.
For five months of the year growers tend their 'secret gardens' carefully keeping their stash as hidden as possible counting the days until harvest.
Alex Breitler, from Recordnet asks this;
What will they leave behind? Irrigation tubes that snake for a mile or more over forested ridges. Pesticides that have drained into creeks and entered the food chain, sickening wildlife. Piles of trash and human waste in the most rugged and bucolic drainages.
Pro-marijuana lobbyists argue that if the drug were legalised then these pro
