Invoice factoring is often a useful tool for companies that need an infusion of cash to produce new orders or complete new service contracts. However, it is imperative that the business owner, working with their accountant, evaluate the incremental effects of establishing a factoring relationship. I've decided on a Mother's Day present—all my InTrade shares on Hillary Clinton. And because I'm such a good daughter, I'll throw in Ron Paul too.InTrade is the online prediction market . They have even surpassed Vegas in the types of things which can be wagered—whether OJ Simpson will be acquitted, first Hurricane of the season, whether Britney will go back to rehab this year, etc.Actually, in many cases the forecasting has been astonishingly accurate. This is due to the law of mob wisdom. If large groups of people, from diverse backgrounds, with various abilities and information, are actually putting something of value behind their opinion, the consensus line is a pretty good soothsayer. Economists, who did not get their degree from the University of Moscow, have always known th
Shortly after polls have closed in Indiana and North Carolina, it is clear that Barack Obama has won the North Carolina Democratic primary. Senator Clinton is leading the way in early returns in Indiana by as much as 14 percent. MSNBC is projecting that if Obama gets 57 percent of the vote in North Carolina it will completely negate Clinton’s gains from the Pennsylvania primary at the end of April. On Saturday, Obama was able to pull out a victory in Guam but both candidates came away with the same number of delegates. When looking at the counties that have reported their votes in Indiana, those areas heavily favor Hillary Clinton’s demographic. However, Clinton’s lead in the vote is large in the early stages and Obama would need to make up large numbers in his area

China Petroleum & Chemical Corp.'s profit growth slowed in the second quarter as higher oil costs trimmed earnings for Asia's biggest refiner from processing crude into fuels. Net income increased 36 percent from a year earlier to 16.8 billion yuan ($2.2 billion) in the three months ended June 30. Beijing-based Sinopec, as the company is known, didn't break out quarterly numbers, which Bloomberg derived from first-half results reported yesterday. First-quarter profit almost doubled. A rebound in crude-oil costs and restrictions on raising fuel prices prompted CLSA Ltd. to cut earnings estimates and downgrade the stock. Sinopec, controlled by state-owned China Petrochemical Corp., said a government order to maintain stable gasoline supplies amid high international oil prices was an ``unfavorable factor'' for the second-half. ``Earnings growth momentum has clearly peaked, with refining margin deteriorating rapidly since late in t
In Blogger templates, margins define the space between elements of the blog, such as the space between the main posts section and the sidebar. If you have added a second sidebar, or simply wish to alter the layout of your blog, you may wish to change some of the margin specifications for elements of your template. In this post, I'll explain how this can be achieved, with examples to help you understand what can be done.
The margins of each blog element (ie: header, sidebar, main-section) are specified in the "Style" section of your Blogger template:
In the "new" Blogger layouts templates, the style is specified between the <b:skin> and </b:skin> tags
In "Classic" Blogger templates, the styles are specified between the <style> and </style> tagsFor both types of Blogger templates, margins can be defined in the same ways. The best way for me to explain how margins work is by using an example; here is the style element for my right sidebar as it appears in my bl
Gross profit margin is a financial ratio used to assess the profitability and efficiency of a firm's core activities, excluding fixed costs. A business that obtains a higher gross profit margin than its competitors within he same industry is more efficient. In simpler terms, Gross Profit sometimes called Sales Profit or Gross Operating Profit is the difference between revenue and the cost of making a product or providing a service, before deducting overheads, payroll, taxation, and interest payments.Net profit is another accounting term commonly used in business and investing. It is equal to the gross profit minus overheads minus interest payable plus one off items for a given time period. Net Profit is commonly referred to as "the bottom line”. Generally speaking, this term is synonymous
Your business might be entirely service or their might be a service component to your business. In manufacturing businesses, it’s important to understand the margins that are being made on selling products. In a service business, it’s just as important to know what margins are being made on your particular services.
I don’t mean just sort of in general in terms of what you think you are making. It is knowing what are the numbers that are showing up through your financial statements.
Take a hard look at your financials. Are you really geared to know through your financials what kind of margins you’re generating from each of your core service areas?
In many cases, I find that is not so. One cause can be using cash based accounting, which can be very prevalent in service businesses. What happens then is that revenues may get booked in one period and the expenses booked in another. There’s not really the alignment between the revenues and expenses, so the company is not really a

ABN AMRO CHAIRMAN Rijkman Groenink is about to lose his far-flung empire, but at least he’ll always have his sense of humor. “Banking is about people. It is a matter of trust and confidence,” he said Saturday in a Dutch courtroom, in defense of an asset sale crucial to a contested merger.
If anything, the Dutch bank has been too trusting and overly confident of late. After paying out a $278 million settlement over its role in underwriting Enron bonds, it has now reserved $496 million to settle a criminal money-laundering probe by the U.S. Department of Justice. ABN has already paid out $80 million in civil penalties over allegations that its lax procedures helped Iran and Libya circumvent U.S. sanctions, and routed billions in suspect transfers from Eastern Europe without too many questions asked.
Before that, the ABN mortgage unit since sold to Citigroup (C: 54.20, 0.00, 0.0%) paid $41 million in assumed losses and penalties after admitting that its employees falsif

The Apple iPhone announced earlier this month should pay off handsomely for the company with over 50% gross margins for each version of the music-enabled smart phone, according to market researcher iSuppli.
The gross margin on the 4G byte version of the iPhone will be nearly 51%, iSuppli said Thursday. The handset is expected to retail for $499, but the cost of components and assembly are less than half that price, just $229.85.

Sales are usually on the radar at most companies. The president will have it at her fingertips. It is likely to be on management dashboards or more traditional reports that are seen across management.
However, it often is not the same with margins.
That wouldn't matter if all sales items returned the same margins. However, that is usually not the case. At the pharmaceutical firm where I was CFO, our margins were dramatically different. New products could have margins as high as 98% while more mature items could fall in the 15-20% range.
While you might not have as dramatic a swing of margins like we had in the pharmaceutical business, if you are like most companies, your margins can vary significantly:
· Some items might be newer and carry a price premium.
· Some items may be made in larger quantities and cost less per unit or service hour.
· Some items you may make yourself, while other items have more outsourced parts.
