Impac Hit by Margin Calls Delays Financials
Former Alt A Mortgage Market giant Impac Mortgage Holdings has revealed that it has been the subject of margin calls from Bear Stearns, noting that it cannot file its third-quarter financials on time and expects to report a ‘larger than anticipated loss’.
Impac also revealed that it now has a “stockholders’ deficit.”
At deadline time, its shares were trading down 10% to a new 52-week low of $0.68. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Impac, a publicly traded real estate investment trust(REIT) said Bear Stearns had seized $286 million in residential loans from the company because of unmet margin calls.
It also said it was in “technical default” on several warehouse lines. In late September they exited most origination markets, and closed its warehouse and commercial mortgage divisions.

I just finished reading the new book by Neal Boortz ‘Somebody’s Gotta Say It‘ last week and I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Neal goes through a few different social issues and tells it how he thinks it is. Of course, Neal is a Libertarian and an author of The Fair Tax Book, so you probably know if you are going to like his writing or not already.
One of the arguments that Neal presented against the education system is that only 2 out of every ten people know the difference between profit and profit margin. When I read this, I physically set the book down and tried to think of ten people who didn’t know the difference that I knew. It was incredibly difficult. However, I realize that being a science and finance nerd, I’m probably predisposed to hanging around people who know what profit is.

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - A casino in downtown Buffalo is one step closer to completion. The Common Council has approved the sale of Fulton Street to the Seneca Nation of Indians.
The final vote was 6 to 3 with a price tag of $631,000. Niagara District lawmaker Dominic Bonifacio voted in favor of the sale but does not think it was the best deal, saying the city could have negotiated a better deal if it had a chance to sit down with the Senecas. North District lawmaker Joseph Golombek was one of three lawmakers who voted against the sale, saying the casino would hurt other local businesses.
Joel Rose with Citizens Against Casino Gambling in Erie County says he’s disappointed in the vote, saying lawmakers had an opportunity and failed.

I noticed this morning that a couple of people had hit by blog looking for The Water Margin and Atsuo Nakamura. It reminded me to put an image of the cover of the David Weir adaptation here. This book is a fairly loose adaptation of the original stories but is actually better than the TV adaptation it was written for, and has aged better. David Weir wrote the British version of the dialogue for the other Oriental cult classic of the period, Monkey. Although I'd read this story when I was about 12 and thoroughly enjoyed it (but not really understood a lot of it) I never got into the TV adaptation, whereas I was addicted to The Water Margin and am now the proud owner of both the David Weir book and the series on DVD.
