Did I hear my Dad right? An opportunity to pick any restaurant in the DC area for my 31st birthday dinner? The gauntlet had been thrown down, and I was all too eager to face the challenging task of picking a restaurant to enjoy my last gourmet meal (presumably) before hitting the road.
Marcel’s, a French Belgian restaurant in Washington, DC, was ranked #9 on Washingtonian’s Top 100 restaurants of 2007. Upon walking into the entrance, I immediately noticed the live piano being played in the bar area to our right. Directly in front of us, up a few stairs, was a view of the kitchen. The host was slightly to our left, and quickly arranged for us to be seated (we were 30 minutes early for our reservation). On the host’s table, there were four pairs of spectacles laid out for those who might need a little extra help reading the menu.
We were immediately shown to our table in the dimly lit main dining room, which looked exactly like the photograph on the restaurant&rs

Marcel Marceau, one of the great poetic masters of mime who became the symbol for its rebirth following the devastation of WWII, died in Paris on Saturday surrounded by his family and friends at the age of 84.
Art historians, who often compared him to Charlie Chaplin, said that he alone resurrected the art form that benefited many performers including Michael Jackson by expressing emotion that went beyond the bounds of spoken language. No details of his death were reported by his daughter, Camille Marceau, as plans are being made for his burial in Pere-Lachaise cemetery in Central Paris.
A fan of silent movies, Chaplin, Keaton and the Marx Brothers were his idols and inspiration when he enrolled in the Dullin’s School of Dramatic Art, studying under the renowned mime Etienne Decroux, at the end of WWII.
President Nicolas Sarkozy of France expressed his “emotion, admiration and respect” for a man who “took the stage arts to a peak of perfection,” while Cult

Marcel Mangel, better known by his stage name Marcel Marceau has died. He was a world renowned mime artist and he is credited with reviving the art of mime after World War II.
Marceau was a genius in the art of silence. He was a master at the craft of mime and a great iconic symbol of France. Many street mime artists base their acts upon his style.

In his work of critical importance entitled "Man Against Mass Society," the French philosopher Gabriel Marcel writes, "..the fanatic never sees himself as a fanatic; it is only the non-fanatic who can recognize him as a fanatic; so that when this judgment, or this accusation, is made, the fanatic can always say that he is misunderstood and slandered...Fanaticism is essentially opinion pushed to paroxysm; with everything that the notion of opinion may imply of blinded ignorance as to its own nature....whatever ends the fanatic is aiming at or thinks he is aiming at, even if he wishes to gather men together, he can only in fact separate them; but as his own interests cannot lie in effecting this separation, he is led, as we have seen, to wish to wipe his opponents out. And when he is thinking of these opponents, he takes care to form the most degrading images of them possible - they are 'lubricious vipers' or 'hyenas and jackals with typewriters' - and the ones that reduce them to mo
Having a tubular aluminum frame resting on the floor is the main feature of this Marcel bed designed by Antonio Citterio. Without feet, the large bed frame sides rest directly on the floor, so is the upholstered, tall headboard. Looks pretty solid to me, must be quite a durable bed.

The aptly titled Dream Bed by designer Marcel Wanders for Poliform consists of an upholstered bed frame, headboards, and wall panels.
“Fabulous padded panels can be mixed and matched to create a personal look and style. The long rectangles create a sprawling horizontal element that stretches the room to new limits. Available with a variety of fabric and leather removable covers, the possibilities are endless. The Dream’s frame continues to use the simple rectangular shapes to create a discreet pedestal for the mattress. To contrast and accent the geometric theme the Dream bed system includes wonderful curvy nightstands.”

It’s no secret that pretty much everyone on the Top Chef Season 2 disliked Marcel, but the controversy surrounding this chef is still hot. TiVo back with me a minute to a post I wrote here that talked about Marcel’s feature in Wired magazine. One of the dishes he created was called the Cyber egg, and featured and egg-looking creation, but made with different ingredients and chemicals instead of actually egg.
When the chefs at the fame wd-50 restaurant read the article, they were enraged. It seems as though they serve something with a similar concept (an egg not made from egg) and similar flavors, as created by the famous chef Wylie Dufresne, self-admittedly one of Marcel’s muses. Marcel has also ordered this dish when he’s been to the restaurant.
You can read his full statement to the accusations of plagiarism here, but the overview is that he uses a totally different technique to create his product and that the flavors found in both dishes can also be found e

Saw the movie As it is in Heaven feel good type movie but with an edge, I liked it a lot, and the music too. I thought how I would like to make images like that music!

And just now, very late at night looking at a video of Marcel Duchamp, which gives me a blast, a jolt, and makes me quite manic.

Marcel, the runner-up for Season Two of Top Chef, did a lot with molecular gastronomy, which is Greek to me, since my kind of cooking is based on old recipes passed down from my grandmother! However, I’m always open to new ideas, and Wired Magazine recently featured some of Marcel’s winning recipes. Here’s a taste of what they have to offer:
The Cyber Egg
Key ingredients: Carrot, coconut milk, cauliflower, agar
Method: Spoon dollops of carrot-cardamom puree mixed with sodium alginate into calcium chloride so their surfaces form a skin. Mix the coconut milk with agar, a powerful thickening agent, and let it harden in a ring- shaped dish.
Marcel’s tip: “I prefer agar to gelatin for this sort of dish because it’s easier to use and can be heated without melting.”
The website, which you can find here, has pictures of all of his creations and more fun recipes, so check it out! More into traditional (and easier) cooking? Stephanie, over at Elementary
Marel may not be the fan favorite according to Bravo’s text messaging poll (although it was a very close race), but he has one loving fan with Rosie from The View! He was in the audience of today’s show, and the full recap can be read here.
Its no secret that the other chefs on Bravo’s Top Chef are not fond of Marcel. But is he playing by the rules? Last night at the judge’s table, Elia accused Marcel of cheating throughout the season. Let’s look at the facts:
1. The chefs had a two month break between the filming of the last [...]
I’ve been getting so many comments about Marcel, that I thought I’d poll you, the readers, to see what the overal thoughts were on him before the new episode of Top Chef on Wednesday!

My full apologies to the weasel, as that furry little animal has a depth of character that this topcheftestant will never in a zillion years have.Marcel Vigneron wins the first Top Chef Weasel Award for showing complete lack of character when standing in front of the judges table. He tried to weasel himself into the limelight and upstage Sam, who did a splendid job of leading his team to victory. Way to go Marcel! You just proved you're as slippery and slimy as your fellow cheftestants have accused you of being.
Some of you might be guessing by now that Ms. Place has become no great fan of Marcel. To give the dude his due, I'll devote this weekend's post to him. Stay tuned to find out my verdict: Was I right or was I wrong to bash him on Top Chef 2: They Cook, We Dish and raise the wrath of a host of anonymouses?
Gentle reader, here is my humble attempt to explain why I sided with the majority of cheftestants in their dislike of Marcel. Having reviewed a few tapes, I have softened my stance toward this ambitious young chef...just a little.Marcel threw down his gauntlet from the startIn this video of Episode One, Marcel declares that he came to win the competition, not make friends. True to his word, Marcel kept himself at a distance. In last Wednesday's episode, Marcel repeated this statement to the judges in front of Ilan and Betty, confirming what the other cheftestants already knew.At work I depend on a team of coworkers to achieve our rather ambitious projects. If one of my team made a similar "lone wolf" declaration like Marcel did, I wouldn't like it either. Before applying for Top Chef, Marcel must have known that he would be expected to perform as part of a team some of the time and live in close proximity with the group. His lone wolf stance coupled with his arrogance, alienated him f

Las Vegas Weekly had an illuminating conversation with Marcel. Click here to read it or go to Blogging Top Chef website to read it and other articles and interviews of interest.Top Chef 2: They Cook, We Dish also posted an interview with Raphael Lunetta, my favorite guest chef judge. Here's another take about the last episode by Tom Colicchio in EW:"EW: Sam, Ilan, and Cliff have said that Marcel is much more annoying than he's being portrayed. Do you think his hazing has been warranted?TC: No, no, no, no, no. No hazing is warranted. None. There's no way, there's absolutely no way. If you don't like the guy, just say, ''We don't like you,'' and don't talk to him. More annoying than he is on TV? C'mon. These are adults, they aren't children. Take responsibility for your actions. I don't buy that."
They cooked with passion, adding their own unique flavors and serving their food at a Hawaiian luau. These two chefs will compete for Top Chef next week: Marcel and Ilan, the two enemies! What do you think? Did Marcel cheat, as Elia accused him of doing? Did the consistently reliable Sam deserve to leave? Should creative but backstabbing Elia have packed up her knives and go? Did Ilan take the most risks and cook well enough to stay? And what did you think about the judging, gentle reader? I loved how this episode concentrated on their discussion, and showed how and why they came up with their decisions. Finally they showed an episode that was all about cooking, and that downplayed the hissy fits and behind the scenes manipulations.Graphics from The Honolulu AdvertiserWanna know what I really think about the final two cheftestants? Stay tuned, chiclets. You're probably dishing with Andy on his live show right now. More later this week when you've digested the shock of seeing the final
