As aficionados of the traditional ´tapas tour´ we normally start in the Old Town at the Plaza de Los Naranjos and work our way down to the coast. To begin with you can´t beat a glass of cold fino, some plump olives and Serrano ham to get the tastebuds going. We would then walk through the cobbled streets down to the Avenida Ricardo Soriano and sample the superb Patatas Bravas and Boquerones al Vinagre in one of the many busy Spanish eateries along the way. Last week we also enjoyed Fresh Mussels Vinaigrette, the creamiest Manchego Cheese you will ever taste and a superb chilled Gazpacho, served by the glass. Chiringuito Los Cano, Marbella – Quite simply the best!!
Having lived on this fabulous coast for 13 years, I have tried and tested the food in many chiringuitos – and my favourite is still ´Los Cano´ on the beach at El Rosario/Las Chapas. The same owner has run this restaurant for many years and the food is fresh, plentiful and consistently good. The service is also friendly and efficient and this is the perfect place to while away an afternoon or evening overlooking the Mediterranean. Many of the excellent dishes on the menu are offered as a full or half portion – an excellent idea if you like to share and try several different fish or meat choices between you. We ordered a bottle of dry white wine to be going on with while we browsed the menu – there is nothing quite like sitting by the beach, enjoying the view, relaxing with a glass of chilled vino in hand whilst deciding what to eat. Days like this really do make me feel blessed to live on the Costa del Sol. Although Los Cano boasts a great range of meat dishes, I always order

PUERTO CABOPINO – MARBELLA´S JEWEL IN THE CROWN
Nestling among the pine trees on the edge of the Mediterranean sits the beautiful Port of Cabopino, Marbella. When I first visited this picturesque Marina in 1985, it really was an oasis of peace and calm, and sitting at the water´s edge surrounded by the woods reminded me of a tropical paradise – virtually undiscovered and untouched by commercialism. My family knew there was great potential here and bought a restaurant on the sea front, which they ran successfully until selling up to buy a hotel 5 years ago. On leaving the A7 road West bound about 2 kilometres from Calahonda, the road into the port winds down passing lush gardens and cobbled squares to the impressive Marina area. With over 100 luxury cruisers and pleasure boats moored here, this is a fabulous place to wander round and see how the other half live. Chicken Marbella Recipe
Serves 5.Prunes with capers? Not the most appetizing combination if one stops to think about it. However, when cooked together with chicken they create a delectable sweet and sour, savory flavor. The original recipe calls for the chicken pieces to be marinated all night. Marbella and Puerto Banus - A Brief History
Marbella is one if not the most famous towns in Spain, For over 50 years it has been a popular holiday destination for people from around the world. However it was not always a bustling town with hotels and restaurants and it has also had its fair share of turbulent times There has been settlements in Marbella since the Paleolithic and Neolithic times and archaeological excavations have found remains from Phoenician, and Carthaginensian settlements in the Rio Verde area of the town. The Romans also settled in the town, calling Marbella Salduba. The Marbella we know today really started to form during the Islamic rule and it is from the Islamic name Marbil-la from where the town gets its modern name. The Muslims built an impressive castle which was surrounded by high walls. The muslim rule was ended in 1485 when the Spanish took control of Marbella and over the centuries the small town began to grow. In the 1940’s Marbella was just a small village with a population of around 900.

I have to admit, before my first visit I was worried that Selwo might be a glorified zoo, but nothing is further from the truth! The animals are well cared for and all enjoy roaming around in over 100 hectares of open land. On entering Selwo we first walked through the open parrot complex where some of the most beautiful species were sunning themselves and preening proudly on their perches. After that we passed slowly through the amazing area which is home to hundreds of birds of prey. This awesome aviary is surrounded by vast nets which soar up into the sky – allowing the birds plenty of room to spread their wings. Las Brisas Golf - Marbella
Las Brisas Golf is arguably one of the best golf courses in Andalucia, and one of several that are situated in Marbella’s famous golf valley. It has hosted several important tournaments since it opened in 1968, including the 1973 World Cup and the Spanish Open in 1983 and 1987, the latter of which was won by Nick Faldo. The course was also a candidate to host the 1997 Ryder Cup, but was passed over in favour of Valderrama. Las Brisas has also been popular with celebrities such as Sean Connery and ex-England manager Kevin Keegan. Another fan is the American golfer Paul Azinger who maintains that it is one of the best courses he has played on. Las Brisas was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, soon after he had completed another of his masterpieces at Sotogrande. The great designer was innovative in his choice of bent grass on the greens - Las Brisas was one of the first courses in Europe to do so. Las Brisas is a very beautiful course that is always well maintained. Many of the gre

Guadalmina has two 18-hole courses set within a large residential complex; the South Course, which is considered the tougher of the two, and the pleasant North Course. In recent years Guadalmina has been host to the PGA European qualifying tour. The South Course of mixed parkland is notable for its wide, tree-lined fairways, and follows the route of the Guadalmina river which flows down towards the Mediterranean and comes into play on many of the holes. The course was designed by Javier Arana, who was responsible for several of the older courses on the Costa del Sol. When the it opened in 1959, the South Course had just 9 holes, but was extended a few years later. It hosted its first Pro-am tournament in 1965. In 2002 the South Course underwent a massive overhaul in which the fairways were re-turfed and the tees and greens updated. Santa Maria Golf - Marbella
Santa Maria is generally regarded as a slightly ‘easier’ course that is suitable for players with higher handicaps. It is especially popular with tour groups has everyone should be able to go back to the clubhouse with a reasonable score. Every hole has its own characteristics and there are a variety of hazards to consider, including water, ravines, slopes and bunkers. The large and greens are fast and well-maintained and many tees are elevated. The course is situated at the top of a valley from where there are superb views along the coastline. Although the Santa Maria is relatively short, several holes have substantial climbs, especially on the way out. The path between the 5th green and 6th tee is particularly steep and a buggy is essential. The first hole is relatively straightforward, although the tee shot needs to clear a lake. The 7th hole (par 3) has an elevated tee, while the 8th (par 5) has a dogleg and water running along the right-hand side of the fairway. The sp

Cabopino Golf may be a relatively new arrival to the Costa del Sol golf scene, but in just a few years this tight and rather challenging course has become one of the most popular on the coast. Designed by Juan Ligues Creus and opened in 2001, Cabopino offers some stunning views of the Mediterranean and is situated amongst umbrella pine trees. It is also close to the popular Cabopino Marina. At the moment the course is still maturing – in a few years it should look even more impressive. The course offers a good challenge to high handicappers who will be able to use all of their clubs, while lower handicappers will be tempted to take more risks. This is quite a short course though, so you won’t be needing your driver too much. The first couple of holes have tight approaches but things do not get really interesting until the 3rd hole (par 4), where the tee is located high above the fairway. Los Naranjos Golf - Marbella
Los Naranjos is one of the trio of championship courses, the others being Aloha and Las Brisas, situated in ‘Golf Valley‘ near the resort of Marbella. Recently the greens have been completely overhauled after falling into disrepair a few years ago. Today, Los Naranjos is a well-maintained course which is recapturing its former glory. Los Naranjos has many features that are typical of a Robert Trent Jones design, such as long tees, wide fairways and undulating greens. Golfers playing at Los Naranjos are given the option to play it safe and ‘lay up’, or be more ambitious and risk getting caught out by the numerous water hazards and bunkers which protect the greens. Marbella tries to clean up its act
Marbella has long been a favourite spot for Britons to settle and enjoy their twilight years slowly roasting in the Mediterranean sun. It has been unkindly called "the Spanish Bourne-mouth". So it was first feared the latest scandal would mean some 5,000 homes in Marbella, many owned by Britons, would be bulldozed as they were built with illegal licences or none at all. But the new city council and many of the developers and building companies implicated in the web of corruption struck a deal, which has granted a reprieve to thousands of worried property owners. Now under the new administration, a development plan is to grant a reprieve to the owners of all but 752 homes.
