Muscles gain strength '''during recovery''' from exercise, when the muscle rebuilds itself, repairing the damage done by exercise. The repaired muscle is generally stronger, hence the basis behind gradually increasing stress in the course of training.

If you ever think about cheating to gain entry into the Boston Marathon, here's some advice: Don't do it.On the Letsrun message boards, someone spotted an ad on ebay with a guy offering to sell his Boston Marathon bib. This would allow someone who didn't qualify to run in last Mondays Boston Marathon a chance to run. And not just run in the back, but near the elites. The seller had qualified by running a 2:30 at his qualifying race. His opening bid was about $20 and soared to more than $400. He said he couldn't run because he was injured. His ad read like this:If you have ever dreamed of running the Boston Marathon and being in the front, take advantage of my unfortunate injury, by bidding on my entry.Because I cannot run, I am letting someone else enjoy the race. I qualified in a time of un
The Kenyan Team is announced. And Gebrselassie's Real reason for not running the Beijing Olympic Marathon?Just time for two very brief news items today from the world of marathon running:Kenya's Olympic Marathon team - as expected...The first is that the Kenyan team for the Olympic Marathon has been announced, and not surprisingly, it consists of the big three "winners" from the recent series of Spring marathons. That is, the team consists of:Martin Lel - London winner, and fastest in the world this year at 2:05:16Sammy Wanjiru - Second in London behind Lel, and perhaps the best half marathon runner in historyRobert Cheruiyot - the impressive, front-running winner in Boston, where he destroyed an admittedly weak field with a sustained period of pressureIt's an unbelievable team, three men
Oh It’s only been a week since I wrote a post here. It seemed like a lot longer when I thought about it. I decided to write about Yahoo Buzz and there top ten picks. Because obviously that’s what people are interested in reading or talking about and why not throw my fifty cents into the pile? So I did numbers one through five over at Virginia Breeze earlier in the evening. And now while I am waiting for American Idol to tape so I don’t have to watch all the commercials I can do the rest. Here. And since I started doing this several hours ago the list has changed. Why? Because the news waits for no man or woman I guess. Stuff happens. But Kristy Lee Cook is still up there and we have been following her exploits on AI. What can we say about her that has not already been said? Not much
Wrapping up the spring marathon season - a Kenyan season, but will the Olympic Games be the same?Yesterday's Boston Marathon brought the curtain down on the 2008 Spring Marathon season, and all eyes now turn towards the August Beijing Olympic Marathon. That will be followed by the Autumn racing season, consisting of Berlin, Chicago and New York, where hopefully, we'll see more world-class racing performances.Because of the proximity of the Olympic Games, the Autumn races in October are more likely to feature the "could have beens", an opportunity for the fourth, fifth and sixth best runners to show what their federations might have missed, particularly in the case of Kenya. The Berlin race will almost certainly also feature Haile Gebrselassie, who looks set, I believe, to attempt the wor
Kenyan great Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot etched his name into the record book of the fabled Boston Marathon yesterday with his epic fourth victory.
Cheruiyot, who won this race for the first time in 2003 before adding wins in each of the past two years, cemented a three-peat with a gutsy first-place time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, 46 seconds.
Running into a head wind, Cheruiyot finished 32 seconds off the course record he set in 2006. It wasn’t for lack of trying: He reached the 20-mile mark in 1:36:10, seven seconds under record pace, but running alone can often be the cruelest of foes.
Boston is very different from the other marathons, Cheruiyot said. As usual, the course was very difficult. Last year, we ran 2:14, and I tried to push harder this year to achieve my personal goal of runni

Willard was hoping to run the Boston Marathon today, but was sorely disappointed when I told him that you need to qualify to run in it. I think he’s training for next year, but I didn’t see him move all day.

We put in a full work day on Saturday. A start right after breakfast and keep going without a significant break till sunset kind of day, which I haven't done for a long time. I can still feel it in my legs, all the kneeling from edge sanding the old wood floor. Peter on the other hand enjoyed a healthy workout going up and down the stairs leading into the basement workshop a zillion times, cutting wood pieces to repair the kitchen floor as well as fitting new moldings for the two windows above the sink. We did get to soak in the last evening sun rays over a Bass Ale and mixed nuts though, initiating the porch for the season. Here are the pictures:The black vent covers had to go since additional baseboard heaters are planned to run along the wall. This is where the wall was, and the repair
Cheruiyot of Fire: Robert Cheruiyot wins his 4th Boston title in dominant styleRobert Cheruiyot fulfilled most people's predictions today, by winning the 112th Boston Marathon. But it was not so much the fact that he won as the manner in which he did it that was remarkable. He absolutely destroyed the field through his own front-running efforts, taking up the pace very early on in the race, keeping the tempo way below course record (2:07:14) schedule, and then attacking the field off that fast pace on the famed Newton Hills. At one stage, the predicted finish time was on for sub-2:06, which is absolutely unheard of in Boston, and would have smashed the old record by over a minute! It was not to be, as Cheruiyot himself paid the price for his incredible front-running, and he ended the ra
Ok so some 25,000 runner are preparing to run the Boston Marathon today. The annual 26.2 mile race will be ran under way better conditions than last year. It was very rainy last year but this years race should be all clear.

The Holy Grail of Marathon running, if you will.I haven't even come close to qualifying. But I got the digits.I found the bib numbers from some of the races I've run. (The other ones are lost). I added them, then divided the number by the number of bibs I have. The number I came up with is my own Fantasy Boston Bib Number: 2731I went to the Boston Marathon Web Site and found the last few finishers with this Bib number. The Boston finisher with Bib No. 2731 over the last few years has finished in a time ranging from 3:14 to 4:17.I may not be fast, but I've got fast karma.I'm rooting for whomever wears Bib No. 2731 today.Get out your bib numbers. Simon Johnson, a firefighter from Tyneside (UK) is going to undertake an epic journey over several mountains and islands on the Inner Hebrides covering the distance equivalent to six marathons. His challenge will start on the 25th of May on Islay. Simon will be raising money for the charity Debra, which is for people suffering from Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). I haven't found more info yet on how to sponsor Simon, but I will post somthing here when I do. A quote from the Shields Gazette:The first race begins on the island Islay next month, and then the 31-year-old will be getting the ferry over to the island Jura. The run is the equivalent to six marathons. He said: "The race is for six days and the longest day will cover 30 miles. On these races I also have to carry my own back pack. You a

Preview of Boston - the last of the big Spring Marathons: Cheruiyot to claim number fourMonday sees the 112th running of the famous Boston Marathon, which has brought us some epic duels and historical races, like the Duel in the Sun of 1982. Coming a week after the great London Marathon, this race promises to make history for Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya, who, if he wins, will join Bill Rodgers, Gerard Cote and the great Clarence de Mar as the only men to win the title four times (he has a long way to go to catch de Mar, who won seven times. Amazingly, his second win came 11 years after his first, and then he reeled off five more in the next eight years!)Cheruiyot was the world's first Marathon Major champion, and has a valid claim to a position as one of the great marathon racers in the w

While it is true that extra-inning games are commonplace in Major League Baseball, it is extremely rare that they last as long as Thursday night's marathon between the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres; it was without a doubt a game that wore out both teams' pitching staffs. The game itself mercifully came to an end when the Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki's game-winning double and RBI, pushing Colorado to the 2-1 win over San Diego in 22 innings at Petco Park. Colorado was led by Willie Taveras and Matt Holliday with 3 hits each - with Taveras scoring 2 runs and stealing a base while Holliday stole 2 bases; Tulowitzki and Clint Barmes added 2 hits each. The win went to Kip Wells (1-0) as he pitched 4 innings, allowing a hit, walking one and striking out 3.San Diego was led by a trio - Kevin
Just another normal night out last night, winding up drinking vodka and eating a battered sausage in the back of a packed chip shop whilst a little fella played Johnny Cash and Elvis covers. Standard, really. Still, could've been worse, could've been out with these lads. Myself and Jack Alcopop made the trip into London last night to catch up with our good pals in goFASTER, along with a cluttered array of brilliant other friends. Quite the industry fest, we hung out with managers, labels, publishers, booking agents, promoters, press people, a few band members and apparently one or two actors, not that I recognised them. We even managed to agree a new, and brilliant, release which I'm pleased about. Oh and Mike Hooper, the former Liverpool substitue goalkeeper, now a doorman in his hometown
Two-time champion Martin Lel confident he can break the recordIn the aftermath of a truly legendary men's race in London, Lel made public his confidence that he can break Haile Gebrselassie's record of 2:04:26 set in Berlin last year. At which race he attempts the record will be up to his manager, “but this victory has given me confidence that I can break the world record," said Lel the day after the race.If Lel were to go on to break the record, it would mark the peak of a relatively long climb to the top of the marathon world. He debuted in 2002 at the Venice Marathon, where he placed second in a (now unimpressive) 2:10:02 while losing to David Makori (KEN). In fact Lel was apparently drubbed by Makori, finishing a distant 1:33 behind him. Seems his incredible finishing power is s

Kenyans dominate the "other" marathon this weekendThe 2008 Flora London Marathon has come and gone, with Martin Lel tightening his grip on the title of best marathoner ever. Lel seems untouchable at the moment as he has won won three major marathons in a row (London 2007, NYC 2007, and London 2008)---all that after a near miss in London 2006 where he was second. The race was hot, hot hot, as the top three all broke 2:06 and the top six all broke 2:07. A week from today, they will run the 112th Boston Marathon. It is the Super Bowl of marathon running. Or the World Series. And with its strict qualifying standards, many of us have never known what it feels like to run Boston, arms raised, crossing the finish line on Boylston Street. And that includes me. To qualify for Boston, I would have had to run a previous marathon in 3 hours, 15 minutes. That's a 7:26 minute per mile pace. I've never kept that pace up for a 10K, much less the two marathons I've run. But, I know somebody who has.So, today, I thought I'd start Boston Marathon week blogging with a question and answer session from one of my co-workers, Tom, who qualified for the 2007 Boston Marathon with his marathon time in the 2006 Austin Marathon. When I first started running four yea

Martin Lel: The greatest marathon runner in the world - London Marathon Champion 2008 The London Marathon, every year the deepest and most competitive marathon in the world, lived up to the hype today, and it was Martin Lel who defended his title and confirmed his status as the greatest racer in the world - he won in a time of 2:05:21, winning the highest quality marathon in history. Three men broke 2:06, three more broke 2:07, but it was Lel who retained his crown as the greatest runner in the world with another royal performance. The table below shows how Lel put his race together, depicting the splits and paces at various distance intervals. Went and watched the Runners start the Marathon today, (Good luck to all who are running.) The race is still being run at the moment and the rain has just started falling down. There's something nice about running in the Rain, it keeps your body at a good temperature which makes it generally easier to push on.

Our crystal ball: London Marathon preview: Majestic Martin to make it three out of threeTomorrow sees the year's biggest marathon in London - well, OK, I'll concede that the Olympic Marathon later this year in Beijing may have more significance this year, but London brings together what is arguably a stronger field - no limits of three athletes per country, for example.About a week ago, we took a look at the men's field, and it seems that every year, London's organizers outdo themselves by bringing together the very best in the world. Since about 2002, London has brought together the top 10 marathon runners, with only a few exceptions - this year, it's a big name, Haile Gebrselassie, who opted to run in Dubai earlier this year, and will probably race Berlin later this year (which may we
Well, it's Marathon time again, good luck to everyone who runs it, belucky and free from injury and drink plenty of Water during the race. It's a good job it wasn't last week really, all that snow? Well, therewasn't really that much but it would have made Running conditions prettydangerous. It's quite a good feeling watching the Marathon, there's always a goodatmosphere and there's something to be said for encouraging the athleteson. I always think you never get the whole atmosphere of the occasion if youwatch it on the Telly.I always wonder how some of the Runners manage to complete the race insome of there outfits? There was a huge Dragon last year or the yearbefore, wouldn't have fancied taking that off at the end of the race.
Tight races are part of marathon historyThe weather looks to be cooperating for Sunday's racing, and we know from our previous post on London 2008 that the optimal range for fast times is 5-15 C. With the field that Dave Bedford and team have assembled year after year, a close race seems on the cards regardless of the weather, especially because it seems over the last several years that the racing has become extremely close as many of the big-city marathons come down the final sprint. Two or more runners sprinting (and diving, in one case!) for the line after 42.2 km of racing makes for incredible drama, but is this a new phenomena? The famous duelsPerhaps the most notable and widely known close finish was the 1982 Boston Marathon in which Alberto Salazar beat Dick Beardsley by just two se

IntroductionFour years ago I literally could not run a mile. I had to stop at 3/4 of a mile gasping for breath on a treadmill, with a personal trainer called Clive probably thinking he had his work cut out here. I had decided to start running, get fit and get some personal training after a health check had revealed me mostly ok but dreadfully unfit for a 30 year old man. So, I started to do the odd short run over the next couple of years and eventually even entered an off-road 10k event. I found those 6 miles so hard I could not understand how anyone could run a 26 mile marathon. I certainly knew I couldn't. A few months later in January 2006 I was watching a TV show on the Marathon des Sables. I was in awe of spectacle and could not understand how anyone could survive such as extreme even

(I recently ran my first half marathon. I learned several lessons during the course of that race. Here’s lesson #2.)
Goals Aren’t Important
At the beginning of the race, I was praying and thinking about how I wanted to accomplish my goal of running the entire 13 miles without stopping.
I was nervous about it, but I thought, surely, I could push myself and make it happen.
But then I felt like God was saying, “What if I WANT you to walk?”
My immediate response was, “What?! You don’t want me to QUIT do you?”
And I really felt as if God was asking me to lay down that goal and instead listen to Him while I ran.
If He told me to stop, I’d stop. If He told me to run, I’d run. But listening to Him was more important than my

Tsegaye Kebede - a name for the future, as the spring marathon season starts with a bang The spring marathon season has begun! As Jonathan wrote earlier this week, the next month throws up a number of big European marathons, as well the famed Boston Marathon (April 21st). That will be a big focus for us over the next while, starting today, which saw the first of those races – the Paris Marathon. Paris has always been something of a “poor cousin” to the London Marathon, by virtue of its proximity to that race – London is next week and bagged most of the world’s marathon superstars. Paris Marathon – victory for Kebede, sending notice to the world However, Paris did still attract a quality, competitive field, demonstrated by the final performances. 1. Tsegaye Kebede

Kristin asked me what I think about when I run…
Sometimes I think about nothing. Sometimes I listen to music.
Sometimes I just say to myself, “One more step, one more step.”
But there are days when running is a really wonderful time of meeting with God. This past Saturday was one of those days.
I learned a lot during the half marathon. Here is the first of three things I learned:
We Must Run Our Own Race
There was one singular reason I met my goal for the half marathon - I ran my own race.
When the gun went off, people were passing me left and right. Most of them were Baylor students who were 14 years, 3 kids, 2 labors and 1 c-section younger than me. I’m sure I looked like quite the old lady.
My competitive self didn’t like that, but I knew th
I have said in this blog over and over again, "Personal Finance is Marathon not a Sprint." But like a marathon often even the best runner hits a wall. The wall is where you just tire out. For others it is a loss of concentration. And even others describe it as a system breakdown.Well...I have hit the wall. I am pretty sure it came from a series of Ninja Bills, that, as they do, jumped out of nowhere for their attack. The first was my computer going down, the second was prepping for my presentation, a bonus issue, a late review and finally the last one was just time...or the lack thereof. It isn't like I have gone off the rails and started charging things, but I am just tired of thinking about my debt all of the time...it really is at times disheartening. It is a long road.I know what I have
I've run two marathons and three half marathons. But I'd probably be no match for CrossFit, a strength and conditioning regimen that some call cult-like.“How many reps would Jesus do?” jokes CrossFit member Trailgirl. In its March 23 story about CrossFit, the New York Times says a workout of the day, or W.O.D., might include, “50 kettlebell swings, 3 800-yard dashes in rapid succession and 10 pull-ups. Repeat. No breaks.”Let me just say this: CrossFit can keep its kettlebell swings. I'm proud of my daily 5-mile runs.

Kate Lawler is to run the London marathon next month, but she is having trouble getting in the sponsorship. But she's saying if she gets the money she will strip off.She said: "I only need £18,500 before I can run in my knickers and bra. But by that 26th mile she's going to look tired, stressed and physically drained while wearing her underwear. She won't look sexy, she'll look like a victim."
Yep. I guess it’s just about time I put this one to bed. You may recall the various announcements here, and threads elsewhere, not to mention Matt’s blog which is still linked here, that all created a buzz for a forthcoming project known as Marathon Touch, which was to be a port of the [...]

Officials in Beijing are probably seething by news that distance runner Haile Gebrselassie just announced that he will not be competing in the Olympic marathon in Beijing. Haile is perhaps the sport’s biggest name and a fan favorite. The city’s pollution levels and his exercise induced asthma are the reasons cited by the marathon world record holder’s agent about why he decided not to run the marathon. Rather, he will try to qualify for Ethopia in the 10,000-meters.“The pollution in China is a threat to my health, and it would be difficult for me to run 42 kilometers in my current condition,” Gebrselassie said in an interview.Britain is leaning towards giving Olympic athletes pollution masks to deal with the rancid air.
