      Maple Laughs
Mister Jeff stopped me with a concerned expression. "The children aren't allowed to wear Toronto Maple Leaf logos in the gym," he explained apologetically. I panicked. Was it a conflict with the Disney sponsorship? A violation of the gym policy code I had never read very carefully? "Do you have something else he could wear - a Montreal Canadiens shirt, perhaps?" I shook my head, now

Give Your Cooking Some Kick With Granulated Maple Sugar
Give Your Cooking Some Kick With Granulated Maple SugarBy Philip RozekGranulated maple sugar is just a dried, table sugar-like form of maple syrup. It's easy to make, and you can use it for all kinds of things in the kitchen. In colonial times, granulated maple sugar was easier to store because it was dried. It was also lighter in weight because all the water had been evaporated off. Today, it's practical because you don't have to refrigerate it the way you have to refrigerate a bottle of maple syrup once you open it.It can be used for pretty much the same things as ordinary table sugar. You can put it on cereal or oatmeal, or you can put it in tea. Of course, it's a traditional glaze for meats, a great topping on cookies or coffee cake, or can be made into any thing your imagination allows

Big Family Style Meal at Maple Garden
We met up with extended family, visiting for the holidays, for a family style meal in Flushing. My mom chose one of her favorite places, Maple Garden Maple Garden. I can understand why it's one of her favorites after seeing a bill for under $200, that more than satisfied a table of 14 people.I don't know the English name for many of these dishes so I tried to take a lot of pictures to facilitate with descriptions. We started with some cold platters, a traditional way to start a proper Chinese meal. The smoked chicken is one of my dad's favorites. I didn't care for the texture but Lon agreed with my dad.Pig ears is one of my childhood favorites. It's thinly sliced and marinated with fresh garlic and spicy oil. This sounds weird but I love the crunchiness of the cartilage. This dish of tiny dried fish, peanuts, and chilis was delicious. I had to try hard to hold back and pace myself since it was only the beginning of the meal.Yup, broccoli stems actually taste good. They're super cru

Fin

SAGE: software libre alternativo a Matlab, Mathematica, Maple

Performance and Mindset: The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Shootout
The shootout is currently an important part of the NHL. Rip it all you want (and it is rip-worthy) but the ability to do well in the one-on-one tie-breaker represents the number of points that will decide whether many teams reach the playoffs. With a dozen or so opportunities for most clubs in the regular season, failure to attach significance to players’ effectiveness at scoring goals in the shootout indicates a serious flaw in thinking on the part of coaches and management. The Leafs are failing miserably in both performance and perspective. The philosophy starts with coach Paul Maurice, who has a bizarre habit of ridiculing the shootout as well as flippantly dismissing his team’s ability to determine its outcome. The thoughts and mood of a coach are contagious and influence the players a great deal. Here are some comments from Paul Maurice following the Leafs’ shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens last night: Coach Paul Maurice has little patience for questions

Bloody Chiclets: Toronto Maple Leafs Melodrama and Hockey Radio
A simple, half-baked explanation used to describe the psychology behind the habits and style of business managers, is the “first rater, second rater” theory. The first rater is the manager who is competent, motivated and concerned only about surrounding himself with the best possible people and achieving results. He will hire other first raters in an attempt to accomplish these goals, unconcerned by such petty things as internal competition or the possibility that he may not be the smartest person in the room. The second rater, on the other hand, is a bundle of fears, insecurities and complexes. His every move and utterance is motivated by the desire to protect himself from criticism and at all costs, maintain his tenuous control over whatever situation he has blundered into. The biggest threat to the second rater is the competence of others, for it highlights his shortcomings and risks unmasking him for the fraud that he is. To avoid such a catastrophe, the second rate

England’s National Football Team and the Toronto Maple Leafs
As England failed to qualify for the 2008 European football championship (Euro 2008) with a loss to Croatia last night, it raises the question of whether similar conditions surrounding two teams in different sports can lead to the same kind of results. Specifically, the Toronto Maple Leafs and England’s national squad. There are many similarities between the two teams’ histories, fan bases, management, media coverage and lack of success in the recent past. The last time England won the FIFA World Cup was July 30th 1966, as they beat West Germany 4-2 in the final. Less than a year later the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup in the spring of 1967. Neither team has claimed the top prize since. The attention, hype, drama and failure that have dogged the Leafs and the English squad have similar qualities and perhaps can explain to some degree the elusive nature of again hoisting one of the most important trophies in both sports. Both teams play in proximity to the bi

      Maple Story Cash Card
About spending money in the virtual world, my children managed to save their own money to buy this cash card for their favourite computer game, Maple Story. They paid a total of S$21.40 at one of the seven eleven store. I would not have given them money to buy such card. They had told me so long ago about Maple Story cash card, but I did not approve them of buying. However, they were very determined to buy the card. They wanted so much to buy the things they wanted for their maple story characters. That is the kind of virtual shopping they had at maple story — buying pets, clothings, weapons and so on. I was surprised that they saved their money. They bought a pet with the card. It is a nice card, but what they spent are merely for spiritual happiness and spiritual gain. What a price to pay for spiritual satisfaction and happiness.

She had frantically nursed and nursed and nursed and finally collapsed with her head on my breastbone and fell asleep, breathing steadily and making little twitches. It was a very sweet moment. Then she got up just about every hour on the hour. J too. At 5:30 while I was calming a sobbing F again J started up. I turned to Brian and muttered, “Your turn.” He kept J occupied, if not exactly calm, until I got F to sleep again and put her into her own crib for the first time all night. I then fetched J who was sobbing and reaching his arms out towards me and brought him into bed too. He nursed for a while and then I asked if he was ready to go back to his own bed. He said, “Da!” so I took him back into his own room and tucked him into bed. “Goudta goudta goudta,” he said. I made pancakes for bre

Florida Panthers at Toronto Maple Leafs: Hockey Game and Public Execution
I wouldn’t want to be Bryan McCabe heading into the Leafs’ Thursday night game against the Florida Panthers in Toronto. Well, OK, the 86, 000 plus dollars he will pocket for the match-up (at the 7.1 million he will earn this season in the front-loaded contract that averages 5.75 million per year, divided by 82 games) would make it more than tolerable. But it’s still going to be a gut churning affair for the Leafs’ defenseman. McCabe has been abysmal this season and things got a whole lot worse when he scored into the Leafs’ net in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday. It was a performance in which he otherwise made relatively few mistakes in comparison to the blunder-fests of previous games. Toronto fans have been relentlessly raining down abuse to let the highest paid player on the team know that he has to improve. The only other possible aim of the boo-boons is to pressure McCabe to waive his no-trade clause and hope the Buds can pawn

TD Training Continues in Maple Ridge
I’ve completed my training stint at the TD Port Coquitlam branch last Friday, after having received word earlier in the week of my new assignment at the Maple Ridge branch in the Valley Fair Mall. This branch is a much busier compared to the PoCo one, so I’ll get plenty of chances to shadow and learn from other FSRs. While I was getting comfortable at the PoCo branch, it’s nice to change and get a chance to see how another branch operates. I’ve been told to expect a lot of credit deals (as opposed to investments), which on one hand is nice since I’ll learn about credit products quickly, but on the other hand it’s a relief that I’m not staying at this branch permanently because I’m not too fond of the lending side of things. Investments are where it’s at! The only downside to my new branch is the fact that my commute has gone from 10 minutes to upwards of 45 minutes thanks to the ridiculously busy Pitt River Bridge. The total dist

A tyrosine kinase inhibitor for a Toronto maple leaf
Jason Blake, a top-notch hockey player currently playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs (suck it, Ottawa), has been diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). CML is a hematological stem cell disorder (i.e. problem involving the cells in bone marrow from which mature blood cells develop) that involves uncontrolled proliferation (i.e. cancer) of myeloid cells (including all white blood cells except lymphocytes, and the precursors from which they are produced). CML is bad news because it means that the bone marrow is making tonnes of useless cancer cells while neglecting the production of useful blood cells, particularly white blood cells that are an important component of the immune system.CML, if untreated, typically progresses through three phases. The initial chronic phase, which Blake is in right now, can last for months or even years and usually features either mild symptoms such as fatigue or else is asymptomatic. So for now Blake can keep on scoring goals (ahem, make that st

The Maple Leafs and the Media
I had been ready to write a post about how rising player salaries and long-term contracts have resulted in performance based decisions regarding NHL rosters sometimes taking a back seat to monetary and perception concerns. Management and coaches have to demonstrate their confidence in an investment by allowing a longer period of sub-par or mediocre play before deciding to make line-up changes, trades or demotions. Then the Toronto Maple Leafs went and started Andrew Raycroft in goal in their first game of the season against the Ottawa Senators. I was surprised and actually a bit heartened to see them buck the wisdom that you have to go with a newly signed but unproven player because of the hype surrounding the trade and the big contract. It would have looked a lot shrewder if Raycroft had been anything more than his usual uninspiring self. At least they kept the media hounds guessing with the “clever” refusal to confirm who would get the start. Though the snickering Ray

      Maple Leafs vs Sabres
Fortunatamen

      Abutilon striatum- Flower Maple
Although commonly called Flowering Maple, Abutilon striatum, is not a Maple tree. This plant gets this common name because the leaves resemble the leaves of Maple trees. Flowering Maples are in the Mallow family and closely related to Hollyhocks, Hibiscus, Rose of Sharon and Okra. Another relative of Abutilon striatum is the weed commonly called Velvet Leaf, while the flowers on Velvet leaf are smaller and the foliage is different the seed pods are similar in both plants. This plant is commonly found throughout South and Central America but is thought to be native to Brazil. In the United States it is grown as a shrub in warm climates and as an annual or houseplant in colder climates.Parlor Maples were brought to North America from Europe in the 19th century where they quickly became a popular houseplant because of the handsome foliage and attractive flowers. Unfortunately this plant isn't as popular as a houseplant today as it once was because of the availability of more exotic looki

BBQ Chicken Wings with Maple Syrup
We miss barbecuing. Before we have kids, our friends and us will often bbq. It's the best thing to do to hang out with friends and to keep each other updated with our lives. The last time we had BBQ was at the public BBQ pit at the park near our place. That was about 5 years ago. We prepared all the food and drinks, our friends just need to bring an empty stomach. After that, most of our friends left for drinks but some came over to our place for mahjong session (with my husband). The number one food to be included for our BBQ is chicken wings. It's a must have. But then, we always use ready-made marinades. I didn't know how to cook then. Hmm.... maybe really simple cooking like frying an egg. hahaha ... Yeah, my poor husband has been my food tester for many years before he is served with decent food.
