Intramuros or the walled city of Manila, is located along the southern bank of the Pasig River close to the rivers entrance into Manila Bay. Intramuros was the old capital of Manila, served as the center of political, military and religious power of the Spaniards during the time that the Philippines were a colony of Spain. My First Rare Palm Sprout! Veitchia merrillii ' Aurea Variegata ', Adonidia merrillii , Variegated Christmas Palm , Manila Palm
Veitchia merrillii ' Aurea Variegata ', Adonidia merrillii , Variegated Christmas Palm , Variegated Manila Palm are the names I have heard this palm called. I collected the red fruits from a tree back in Dec 07. In previous posts I have talked about these sprouts. I had around 70 cleaned seeds that I threw in an extra recycle bin that I had. Well, over the weekend I went to clean out the community bin and found this rare beauty. As of now this little sprout is showing great signs of variegation. Both sides of the first leaf have a yellow/white veins running through them. I have asked a few questions like will this seedling keep the variegation and the responses have been good. So hopefully I have sprouted my very first rare palm tree! Here are a few pictures from the recycle bin before th

Regions, provinces even towns have varying traditions played during the Lenten Season. Bacoor is only an hour's away (that's without traffic), from Taytay but their Holy Week customs differ. Let me just do some clarifications. The province of Cavite used to be a seat of the Aglipayan Church. There were more Aglipays than Catholics in the town of Bacoor. The Aglipayan congregation were the cream of the crop in Bacoor. For some reason ( that I know nothing of), the Aglipay church in Bacoor separated into two. Those who were disillusioned transfered to the Catholic church. Now, every time a Catholic event calls for a procession, there are three individual churches involved: Aglipay 1, Aglipay 2 and the Roman Catholic.I have observed that anywhere in the Philippines, Palm Sunday is celebrated w

      Sunset cruise in Manila Bay
I was on the exclusive Manila Bay sunset cruise of Rogue Magazine yesterday. I most definitely needed this break! Unlike our Asian neighbors, cruises are not that popular here in the Philippines, maybe because the water pollution leaves a bad impression. But after tonight's cruise, I felt we have a lot to be proud about. It's the first time I saw the Manila skyline. And it does not look like Manila at all! It was just a two-hour cruise but I most definitely enjoyed it.And it's one of the best ways to enjoy the Manila Bay sunset. I hope we start cruises from Manila Bay to Laguna de Bay via the Pasig River, or Manila Bay to the Pampanga River. During the olden days, people traveled from Manila to Laguna and Pampanga via the waterways and it would be great to revive these historical routes as

VALISNOThe families of overseas Filipino workers and local exporters have all been severely affected by the continued appreciation of the peso against the dollar, with prevailing exchange rates reaching P40 to the greenback, from a high of P56 to the US currency two years ago.But local concert producers are singing their way to the bank, as the weak dollar enables them to bring in big-ticket foreign acts that are attracting huge concert audiences, and strong ticket sales. These international musical artists, with their dollar-denominated talent fees, suddenly became more affordable as local producers need fewer pesos to pay them to appear in a concert in the country. Countdown To the World Championships: Get To Know UP Manila B
IT WAS ROBERT’S BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY! Save the best for last, right? Hehe. UP Manila B is the duo of Benjamin Espina and Robert Angelo Totanes. This team debuted in the Saint Paul Manila - Intervarsities. Though the team fell short of winning the tournament, the rounds were very much reflective of the potential that an agnostic and atheist can bring to the table. Robert Totanes is one of UP Manila’s investments for the future. Despite being only in his first year of debate, he reached the octofinals of the National Debate Championship. His drive to improve himself is simply impeccable. When not debating, this student from the UP College of Medicine enjoys going to the gym to further promote his pet project - Project Robert Asenso. Belated Happy Birthday! Benjamin Espina is a returning debater. After leaving the scene for over two years, Benj came back in a relatively big way by reaching the finals of the Philippine Intercollegiate Debate Championship as an adjudic

Manila through the eyes of an Aussie
When people find out that I am from the Philippines, and it turns out that they’re thinking of traveling there, the usual question that they ask me is “is it safe to travel there?” I have been living in Manila since 1980, and lived 27 years with only minor cuts and bruises, usually caused by my own clumsiness. But that’s coming from a local who’s used to Manila’s…quirks. How does Manila look like to a foreigner? Here’s a great article written by an Australian journalist: MANILA is everything you’d expect of a bustling Asian city, and quite a few things you wouldn’t expect. The Philippines capital, with a population of 11 million, is bustling to the point of being chaotic. It has its share of traffic jams, crime, poverty and pollution. The sight of heavily armed men outside shops and banks, and signs imploring visitors to leave guns at the door, may well unsettle those of a delicate disposition. But none of that - with the p

Madaling sabihing “adbenturismo” lamang nina Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Brig. Gen.

      Arriving in Manila
My first ever stop in Asia starting with a five day exploration of the city of Manila… It sure is different than anything else that I’ve experienced before but if you’re like me and only seen North America & Western Europe it’s quite understandable that you’ll be in for a surprise. At around 16 million inhabitant in the day time and countless undocumented residents Manila is the biggest city of South-East Asia and actually ranks 19 one the list of the world’s most populous metropolitan areas. So it’s not a small place to start off in Asia but the first thing that yo notice you as you get out is the boiling heat! Especially when arriving from a very chilly October Paris morning the day before as I embarked onto this journey… Then the airport itself. Arrivals are sealed off from any visitors by the police. Richard Bautista of the NCCA.Our tour began with a briefing and a sumptuous lunch at the Pescadores restaurant at Letre Road corner Dagat-Dagatan Avenue. We then proceeded to our first stop, the San Bartolome Church. I had high expectations for this church knowing that it was one of the untouched churches in Metro Manila. But to our shock, it's in the process of being uglified by the current parish priest who is not even a native of Malabon. The current hard-headed parish priest, Fr.
