Mangoes here, mangoes there, and mangoes every where!

Here they are tightly packed in a wooden cartoon.
There they are neatly sliced and piled on a plate,
Here they are pickled and brined to perfection.

Normally I leave the sweets to my sweet. But every once in a while I venture down the avenue toward a dessert. This one turned out pretty tasty. I was sort of flying by the seat of my pants, as I often do, and I managed to turn out a tart-like crisp that I could be proud of. I had planned to make this for the Royal Foodie Joust, but I had not been feeling very well over the past few weeks and

Last Tuesday, I attended the Mango fall collection at Barcelona’s Raluy Circus, which came complete with a big-top tent, a stunning acrobatic display and waiters with sad-clown faces.
The party itself was a bit of a circus: Before the show, I hung around with the international cartel (Canada, Israel, Singapore and Austria—the French, Germans and Russians kept to themselves), sipping bubbly,

I'm on my way to my niece's birthday party soon and will not have internet access for the rest of the day. So here are my pictures and a 100% score on my accountability log on the presumption that I will stick to my plan today. So while everyone else is eating birthday cake, I'll be having a juicy ripe mango. That's my plan. How's that for an even swap? Wish me luck, shredders. I just hope it's
Well we are way into May and yet to taste any Mango till now! What a sad thing indeed. Come summer and its highlight to see mangoes piled up high in all corners. Those we have had our share of raw mangoes and have made Mambidikaya Pappu and chutneys, the ripe ones are yet to hit our home. I was telling hubby about this and he said we enjoyed the mangoes so much last year to last a life time! We mostly eat them as such and never make anything with ripe mangoes, except of course eating them curds rice. This is my most favorite way of eating them. When I started talking this to office, most of them expressed surprise at this combination and yes, I introduced them to this wonderful taste. And there was no turning back for any of them. Since Indira announced the Mango Mantharam, I knew I had to
I've said it before and I'll say it again; if there's one thing you'd want to make and serve to your guests without thinking twice, its Paneer! No matter how you serve it, there's hardly a chance you'd go wrong. One such crowd favorite is the Tandoori Paneer Tikka, succulent cubes of paneer marinated and grilled or baked in a "tandoori oven", then served with grilled vegetables. But here, I have tried to take it one level up by making a spicy yoghurt marinade, then serving the Paneer Tikka with a home-made sweet and tangy mango dressing! Sounds inviting, right? Just wait till you've actually tasted it, maybe you wouldn't like leaving any for your guests! When Meeta announced the theme of Bollywood Cooking for her Monthly Mingle, she expected us to to dish out something that is fit for the s
Sunday was one hectic day. It was Konda's birthday and you can imagine what ruckus it would've caused. She has been always interested in her birthdays and would always keep saying its her birthday every other month! The first time she understood this concept of celebrating her birthdays, was when she started going to school and seen others getting toffees and gifts. When she was a toddler, one day she came all excited and told me that it was her best friend's birthday and she was given two toffees. In the same breath she asked when her birthday was. Since it falls during summer vacation, we felt bad that she can never enjoy her birthday with her school friends. So she takes toffees to her friends before her school closes for summer. This year too, it was no different. And once the school cl

Lon's friend Justin gave us some lamb shoulder chops the other day and I thought hmm, interesting. I had never had lamb shoulder chops before. I made them for lunch today and I'm hooked. It's a great cut of meat!!I needed to make a quick lunch with the 1/2 inch thick lamb shoulder chops so I decided to rub them with a Moroccan Spice Blend. Use a generous amount and then throw them on a the grill for 4 minutes per side (for medium rare).I served it with an amazingly refreshing Mango Raita which was perfect with the strongly spiced lamb. While I can't take credit for the recipes, I can take credit for the pairing. It was a such a great meal, you won't believe you made it in less than 2o minutes!
I think that by now, everyone knows how much I love mangoes. When I read the ingredients for this month's Royal Foodie Joust, put on by the Leftover Queen, I about squealed with delight. They were right up my alley: mangoes, cardamom, and brown sugar! With spring coming on, and our days getting warmer by the minute, I couldn't resist grilling up some mango with my room mate's new grill. :)I love the way this recipe turned out. It's quick, easy, and incredibly tasty. SO happy I thought to grill them! The slightly-burned sugar gives the mango a really nice caramelized flavour, which compliments the cardamom beautifully. I've always been a bit cookbook-challenged, which means I rarely make a recipe the way the cookbook author writes it. I do use cookbooks endlessly though to get ideas for flavor combinations. This recipe combined ingredients paired with mangos in two of my favorite cookbooks, with a few of my own food preferences thrown in. I was completely taken with the combination of flavors (and once again I ate all the salad in the photo before I even looked at the photos - very bad food blogger!) It does have strong flavors, but if you like all the ingredients, definitely give this one a try. This salad has a lot to choose from for Weekend Herb Blogging, where you can write about any herb, plant, vegetable, or flower, but I'm going to feature hearts of palm, an ingredient I learned to love in college,

The beautiful Elizabeth Hurley had promised during a 2005 interview that she was through with bikini shoots. Well, thankfully Mrs. Hurley is not woman of her words as evident by these recent advertisement photos for a line of swimsuits by Mango. Actually, the 42-year old mother of one is now willing to do bikini photo shoots under two conditions: 1) the photos must be in her best business interest, and 2) airbrushing must be involved. We really don't care what her conditions are, just as long as she continues posing in her skivvies. Read more at the Daily Mail.

For some time I've been considering getting a new phone for the house. We had a digital phone with an extension upstairs in the bedroom, which was great. The trouble was that the display on the downstairs phone was going, which meant you couldn't double check the number you had dialled, but other than that it all worked OK. Then last week the upstairs phone started acting up. The sound quality

Orange Mango is one of the most conventional flavor combinations in energy drinks. It’s pretty interesting when you stop to think about it though, since you never see orange mango flavored soda, only orange mango energy drinks. I wonder why that is. Since every company under the sun seems like it has an orange mango flavored energy drink, it makes sense that Euphoric would also take a stab at
I really like the yellow mango shake in the Philippines. It's made from ripe, fresh mangoes and usually cost about 30 pesos (S$1.10), although it can cost up to 50 pesos in Manila. I can have one at every single meal and not get fed up of it. Every now and then, though, I opted for a green (unripe) mango shake, if that's available on the menu. It's a bit sourish, but I like the kick. However, what happens when you just cannot decide between a ripe mango shake and green mango shake? Order one of each, and get double the calories? Burp. After more than a dozen trips to the Philippines, this is my first time to see a half-and-half! Pastor Balm ordered it first and the rest of us, including Pastor Mike, asked... what in the world's that! It's half-green and half-yellow! And then of course we had

I have been so busy with work related things this week that the ole' TiVo filled up with shows I want to watch. I recorded "Dancing With The Stars" and kind of did the "fast forward" through much of this week's DWTS episodes. It has been a bit of a snoozer this year, with a lack of charismatic personalities and an extra dollop of annoying "celebrities" (Adam Carolla is quickly approaching Martin Short's fingernails-on-chalkboard territory) and I just don't understand the slobbering, groveling and total arse kissing of Priscilla Presley (that type of toadying should be reserved for the Aging Disco Diva) I mean seriously...she was married to Elvis...and.....??? She was once beautiful... and... but does that justify sycophantic sainthood? Anyway....Steve Guttenberg provided the highlight

One of the most interesting and challenging part of cooking is experimenting with flavors and spices. It reminds me of my lab-experiment days when you'd keep adding elements till you successfully concocted a new compound and exaltingly cried out "Eureka!!" Ok, I know not all experiments go great, but at least that gives you enough incentive to try out new stuff; that's precisely what I felt a few days back when I decided to try a vietnamese recipe for Sweet and Sour Potatoes with Mangoes! A bit hesitant, a bit reluctant and afraid, I timidly thought I should try replicating this recipe that we relished at a Tofu House restaurant. But as I started mixing the ingredients, which was totally on my whim, it started looking good, and I got more enthusiastic and confident. The blend of spices wit

Being in Los Angeles has really made me realize that I'm truly and utterly in love with tropical fruit. Not just coconut, but mangoes, avocados, bananas, and pineapple, among others. That's something I really miss about L.A. - the convenience and availability of tropical fruits. Here, it's all in season essentially year-round, and is easily accessible at a low price. That's one food group that I don't think I could ever give up for the 100 Mile Diet. So, in the spirit of warmer climates and taking advantage of convenience, I've made this spicy mango and cucumber salad. This salad has two kinds of heat - ginger and cayenne - but the ice cold mango with the crunchy cucumber balances it all out well. Then, topped with the silken cashew cream, this was hot weather heaven in a martini glass. Spi

When I was about 8 years old, I remember my paternal grandfather saying he was going to grow mango trees in our lands. I remember being all excited about it, though actually growing Mango trees were quite a daunting task. Still he went ahead and planted them. For the next 5 years, we didn't get to hear much about the crop. But during every summer vacation, that we spent there, I remember going to visit the mango trees dutifully and expecting them to give us wonders. Andhra is known for its delicious mangos and during the season, our house will be overflowing with the bounty, though of course not ours. My grandfather, though indisposed due to physical condition, blamed the seller for cheating him of a good variety. We used to travel by train to our native place and the journey takes us thro

So, I've decided to give myself random food challenges. This will not only be to expand my views of certain foods, but my culinary repertoire. I have to admit that I generally think of certain foods to be good for few purposes. Those tried and true recipes that we all know, and don't really diverge from. No more, I say!My first challenge is Raw Butternut Squash. I haven't worked much with winter squashes in my life, and I tend to only make creamy soups from them. About a week ago, I did a couple days of just raw food. I had this lovely butternut squash sitting there, crying at me to be used for something... But squash, how could I use you in my raw food adventures? What wonderful flavours could you possibly bring to my raw table? It just screamed CAROB! I don't know why - it just did.The o

Early morning I visited again my mango farm to check for its status. The flowers are growing healthy and I hear the buzz of the Bees.
