At the end of the 19th century, Julius Cohnheim, a follower of Rudolf Virchow, arrived at an idea that cancer appeared to be "just an embryo cell, which was lost." Later, at the beginning of the 20th century, Alexander Maximoff, a Russian histologist was indirect proof of the existing spare embryo cells. Dan Otto Warburg, a winner of the Nobel Prize, discovered that cancer was caused by severe imp

Malignant hypertension was first described as a separate disease entity more about 90 years ago by Volhard and Fahr. It is characterized by a markedly elevated blood pressure, usually greater than 200/120 mmhg, that is most often associated with an increase in plasma creatinine levels, kidney dysfunction and failure, left ventricular hypertrophy, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and neurological

The recent death of 18 year old Stephanie Kuleba due to malignant hyperthermia complications has raised the spotlight once again on plastic surgery and this particular complication. The high school senior chose to have a reconstructive breast augmentation surgery at such a young age in order correct asymmetrical breasts and an inverted areola.Malignant hyperthermia syndrome is observed to be a genetic condition. It is very difficult to detect and identify people who are at risk from this condition. Very often the first time it is noticed in an individual is when anesthesia is being administered to the patient. In cases like Stephanie’s the first time was too late.Since the condition is hereditary, genetic testing and a biopsy of the muscle tissue can be done in order to detect it. This i

For pleural mesothelioma cancer, it will be very difficult to treat this type of cancer because two reason with the diagnosis process. The first reason is the fact of the symptoms of pleural mesotheliom take very long time to appear, take years. The second reason is the fact of the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma is very similar to the symptoms of other diseases that are not dangerous as pleural mesothelioma cancer. To treat mesothelioma you must firs diagnose the disease, the diagnosis process may be by surgery option or by "CTA" scans or by using other types of radiations like X-rays radiation. After the diagnosis process the war on this cancer will be started. The treatment of pleural mesothelioma is very important to begin early, because the late beginning will let the malignant tumors
Malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura) or abdomen (the peritoneum). Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos.A doctor should be seen if a person has shortness of breath, pain in the chest, or pain or swelling in the abdomen. If there are symptoms, the doctor may order an x-ray of the chest or abdomen. The doctor may look inside the chest cavity with a special instrument called a thoracoscope. A cut will be made through the chest wall and the thoracoscope will be put into the chest between two ribs. This test, called thoracoscopy, is usually done in the hospital. Before the test, the patient will be given a local anesthetic (a drug that cau
Malignant Tumors are Cancerous Malignant tumors are created by the growth of cells that clump together to form a lump that does not have distinct borders especially at a later stage of it’s development when it will have roots that tend to stick out from the central lump. Tumors can develop in any part of the body. The one exception where cancers do not form a tumor is for Leukemia which is a cancer of the blood and organs that are responsible for the formation of blood including the lymph system, bone marrow and the spleen.
The cells that first begin to lump together create what is called the primary tumor. The grouping together of cells to form a cancerous tumor often takes place very slowly so that the tumor does not exhibit any detectable symptoms for many months or in some individuals or types of cancer, even for many years. Eventually though, the tumor will continue to develop and when it does one of two things will happen; the tumor will either spread (metastasize) or it will n
I read several article about malignant melanoma skin cancer. This skin cancer is very danger condition and have high mortality range in patient. Melanoma arise from melanocytes, this cell give the pigment or color to the skin by the melanin. Melanoma can appear in the beginning like a mole. The person with high exposure to the sun, UV, lightly pigmented skinor family history of skin cancer increase the probability to have this condition. This skin cancer also is related to genetics factors. This skin cancer can spread from the skin to other part or organ of the body.To diagnostic this cancer quickly and reduce the mortality is very important continuously examine your skin and look any change in mole or pigmented area. Several article talk about the “ABCDE” mnemonic to prevent and detect this skin cancer. This mnemonic include several change in a mole for example.A- Asymmetrical mole or asymmetrical shape skin lesion.B- Border irregular in a mole or skin lesion.C- Color: this skin
Malignant Diffuse Pleural Mesothelioma

Majority of mesothelioma (cancerous tumor affecting mesothelial cells of organs) cases come under the classification pleural mesothelioma . This is a cancer that originates in the pleura, the delicate membrane covering the lungs. Out of these, seventy five percent are diffuse malignant pleural mesethelioma. The balance is localized or benign.
Diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma is, in most cases, caused by unprotected exposure to asbestos. The symptoms include shortness of breath and/or chest pain, loss of weight, cough, fatigue, swelling on the face, neck and arms, reduced appetite, and coughing up blood. There would be collection of fluid in the thoracic cavity. It may take from twenty to forty years or more after contact with asbestos for the symptoms to emerge. Because of the time lag, diagnosing is often difficult. Moreover, many doctors are not familiar with the disease.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome(NMS) is a rare, life-threatening but potentially treatable condition that is most often associated with adverse reactions to antipsychotic drugs. First identified in 1956 with the advent of modern psychiatric medications, the fever, rigidity, elevated enzyme levels, and brain pathology associated with the syndrome has been typically found to have a mortality rate in the 10-15% range.A study described in the April-June, 2007 issue of Neurology India examines the identification, treatment and outcome in fourteen NMS patients admitted to the Neurology department of a large teaching hospital of North India. The cases were detected and treated during a three-year period (May 2000 to April 2003).The incidence of NMS was 1.40/ 1000 patients treated with neuroleptics and mortality rate was 14.28%. Among the medications associated with development of NMS, Haloperidol (parenteral) was implicated as the most common drug for NMS in 57% of patients. An association wit

A new study shows that an important drug used in the treatment of malignant melanoma has little effect on the melanoma cells themselves. Instead, it activates immune-system cells to fight the disease. The drug, called interferon alpha (IFNa), is used to clean up microscopic tumor cells that may remain in the body following surgery for the disease. It is the only drug approved for this purpose.Researchers say that these findings underscore the need to develop ways to make melanoma cells more vulnerable to the drug, or to overcome the block within the cells that prevents them from responding to it.The study showed that melanoma cells taken directly from patients, as well as those grown in the laboratory, respond poorly to IFNa, even when the drug is given at very high doses, while immune cells respond well to the same substance.Click here to see the rest of this article in Medical News Todaypermalink TechnoratiPhilippine Nursing http://Philippinenursing.blogspot.com
The results of a recent medical study confirmed results from earlier studies demonstrating that the chemotherapy drug pemetrexed combined with either cisplatin or carboplatin showed promise as a treatment for previously untreated, inoperable pleural mesothelioma. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a form of cancer associated with exposure to asbestos. The study, which was reported at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting being held in Chicago, was derived from data on 1,704 mesothelioma patients who were among the more than 3,000 patients worldwide who received pemetrexed alone or in combination with a platinum agent such as cisplatin or carboplatin. Pemetrexed is known by the brand name Alimta in the U.S. and other countries. For the full story, go to www.medpagetoday.com
DETROIT, April 17,2007 /PRNewswire/ -- The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute today announced significant scientific findings that could lead to better treatment and therapies for cancer patients suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma.Karmanos scientists presented their research at the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting in Los Angeles, CA."We are getting closer and closer to making an impact on this insidious disease," said Anil Wali, Ph.D., an associate professor with Karmanos who led a group of cross-collaborative researchers in studying the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic (UPP) pathway regulatory proteins.Their study demonstrated that protein ubiquitination and degradation are critical players in the spread of mesothelioma. After studying 241 genes involved in the UPP pathway, Wali's group determined 33 genes were differentially expressed among epithelioid and biphasic histotypes."We have already reported earlier detection biomarkers that can b
