The World’s First Mainstream Semantic Web
The vast majority of semantic technologists are directing their efforts to search. It’s an important use of their talents; search is a hard problem worth solving. But it seems to me that we need to take a broader view. Semantics is the stuff of thought, of meaning, of our most personal and deeply held beliefs. [...]

(Mainstream) U.S. soccer writers are fools, Exhibit A
Idiocy can certainly be tolerated on message boards, blogs or college campuses. Indeed, on some level we expect nonsense to emanate from all three areas. That's kind of what they're there for, right? So when somebody on the BigSoccer sewing circle argues with conviction about the New York Red Bulls' needing to go after Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabio Capello, Ronaldinho, Buffon or Drogba, we can kind of

Last year's Toshiba Portégé R500 and Sony VAIO VGN-TZ150N were trailblazers in the thinness quest. Both fit optical drives in sub-3-pound frames less than an inch thick. (The R500's DVD drive is just 7mm thick.) They both have motherboards the size of your hand, and other miniaturized components. Yet trade-offs were made. The R500 and TX150N have a meager 1GB of RAM apiece (we recommend 2GB to run Vista), and their CPUs are weak. The latest thinness champ is the Apple MacBook Air. Japanese Puzzles by Hands-On Mobile: are Paint-by-Number puzzles going mainstream?
Seven years ago when I started collaborating with Dave Green and Conceptis, the company had just this one picture logic puzzle type they called Pic-a-Pix and it only came with black and white pictures. It was year 2000 but in the west no one had a clue what we were talking about when we showed him our samples. It was a long way from that point to nowadays when eleven puzzle families, dozens of

More Bad News From Afghanistan: For the Mainstream Media
More bad news from Afghanistan--for Old Media.[hat tip: Awa Puhi & Pat]No matter how the mainstream media tries to dress it up, the news coming out of Iraq these days is mostly of the good variety. Deaths down, more territory secured and more Iraqis lining up behind what they can increasingly see is the strong horse: the United States military. So what's the big mainstream story? Deaths in Afghanistan are up. Newsroom inhabitants at CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC, the NY Times and other outposts in the once-monolithic liberal news empire can come out from under their beds. It's not that bad. The reason is simple for anyone who studies both the Afghan situation and Congress: ineptitude.A look behind the statistics from Christian Lowe at the Weekly Standard:IT'S TRUE THAT INSURGENT violence is on the rise in Afghanistan, with a surging Taliban taking up tactics first used against U.S. forces in Iraq, including suicide bombs, improvised explosive devices, and vehicle-borne IEDs. NPR Covers RIAA Folly; VCL Plans Entering the Mainstream
via EFF.orgFor years now, EFF has been arguing against the strongarm tactics of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and its vain attempt to stop filesharing by dragging music fans into court. At the same time, we've also been tirelessly promoting the idea of Voluntary Collective Licensing (VCL) as a solution that could give fans what they want while ensuring that musicians get paid. Lately, these formerly fringe ideas are garnering broader respect after a few mainstream stories about the RIAA lawsuits and VCL.Take the excellent series on the RIAA lawsuits from National Public Radio (NPR)'s Marketplace. While responsibly airing perspectives from several major players, the show nevertheless presents an unflattering portrait of the music industry's tactics. RIAA lawsuit victim Tanya Anderson, EFF Senior Staff Attorney Fred Von Lohmann and RIAA CEO Mitch Bainwol are each featured in extensive interviews, and the simple facts of the story are allowed to speak for themsel

The benefits of blogging and its acceptance as a form of mainstream media
There has been growing acceptance and awareness of the terms blogs and blogging. An article on Tech.Blorge.com revealed that 80% of Americans are aware of blogs and visit blogs on a regular basis. Many people have been accustom to blogs and its ability to provide information on specialised and niche topics that may not be covered in mainstream medias. Others also find blogs as a useful source of entertainment news and gossip, however a large percentage of blog readers still refer to traditional forms of media for news, sharing their time spent with blogs on medias such as newspaper, television and radio. Therefore as people become increasingly aware of blogs, they develop an understanding of the business opportunities blogs. Following is a description of is a list of the opportunities: Targeted advertising: because of the specific nature of blogs which concentrate on particular interest and topics. Blogs usually tend to have attract a certain group of audience with specific

Major Political Progress in Iraq Goes Unnoticed by Mainstream Media
Recently we have heard unofficial reports that General Petraeus’ report would show military gain in Iraq and very little political progress. With Democrats having to concede that the surge is working they are hanging their fortunes on the fact that little has been accomplished politically. They will use this as their new excuse for reason to surrender in Iraq. They need little or no political progress in order to keep up their we must surrender rhetoric. Perhaps that is why the recent political breakthrough in Iraq is getting so little coverage by the oh-so-willing-to-go-along-with-the-Democrats main stream media. “These leaders … recognize the true and meaningful reconciliation that needs to take place,” Bush said in a brief statement upon his arrival at Albuquerque. “They recognize this is a process. Yesterday’s agreement reflects their commitment to work together for the benefit of all Iraqis to further the process.” He said their action

How Missed Signs Contributed to a Mortgage MeltdownThe above piece makes the completely ludicrous statement that "what started out as a crisis in an obscure corner of the credit market — subprime debt, for borrowers with weak credit — managed to infect stocks and bonds."What the? "obscure corner of the credit market"?! A picture is worth a thousand words (those $ figures are in the billions). Yes, an obscure corner of the credit market generated mortgage originations to the tune of nearly $2 TRILLION in three years to subprime borrowers. It was obscure in 1994. If lenders can get 30-cents on the dollar out of foreclosed homes, what kind of losses are we talking? Yikes.

How Linux could be accepted by the mainstream. Is the Linux community ready?
After watching an interview with a Linux cafe owner on TV, I started to think if Linux will ever be accepted in the mainstream. I saw in him the passion he had for Linux. I never really use it myself(many many years ago) and have nothing against it. For now, It’s not my cup of tea . Because of this, I can step in the shoes of a potential mainstream user(MU). Behind the scenes, it’s a very accepted operating system to control servers to phones. But a MU will ask questions like: can it play games, can I write emails/letters, surf the net… and which one to select. To most of this questions the answer is yes. Let’s take them one by one: Games: If MU is a real gamer, then MU will be sad that Y games is only available for Windows. Mac user know it well. Emails: MU can use Thunderbird on many operating system. So, if MU already use it then it’s not a learning curve Letters/Documents: MU can use Open Office on many operating system. Again, if MU already use it

Sometimes the Mainstream Media Ticks Me Off
I was going to write this post about how David Beckham opened his Galaxy account with a trademark free kick goal in the 27th minute against DC United in the Superliga semi-final. I intended to note how the crowd at the Home Depot Center was buzzing with anticipation the moment DC was whistled for a handball in the spot, and Beckham delivered even though he hasn’t taken a free kick in eight weeks. I also was going to mention how DC goalkeeper Troy Perkins has obviously never come up against a free kick like that as Perkins looked totally lost. Finally, I wanted to note how the Galaxy seem to play better as a team with Beckham on the field. Then I made the mistake of watching national news outlets “cover” the game. I’m normally not one to complain about soccer coverage in the United States, and for the most part, I’m pleased with what we have. However, I have to comment on the coverage of this game. The pattern of nearly every sports highlight show wa

Culturally Contested Pedagogy: Battles Of Literacy And Schooling Between Mainstream Teachers And Asian Immigrant Parents
Author: Guofang LiPaperback: 265 pagesPublisher: State University of New York Press (November 2005)Language: EnglishISBN: 0791465934(R)The voices of teachers, parents, and students create a compelling ethnographic study that examines the debate between traditional and progressive pedagogies in literacy education and the mismatch of cross-cultural discourses between mainstream schools and Asian families. This book focuses on a Vancouver suburb where the Chinese population has surpassed the white community numerically and socioeconomically, but not politically, and where the author uncovers disturbing cultural conflicts, educational dissensions, and "silent" power struggles between school and home. What Guofang Li reveals illustrates the challenges of teaching and learning in an increasingly complex educational landscape in which literacy, culture, race, and social class intertwine. Advocating for a greater cultural understanding of minority beliefs in literacy education and a more

“How we won the mainstream;” what utter rubbish
In this bit of self-congratulating delusion, Susan Gardiner and Markos aka Kos Moulitsas wax poetic in an article entitled How We Won the Mainstream but it might just as well have been called How We Ignore Reality. The reality is that while the Democrats toy with appeasing the populous with halting steps towards healthcare and feeble steps in dealing with an illegal war they helped to create, the country is fading ever further from its ideals. Take two issues, as examples: • Impeachment. There can be no reasonable doubt that the Bush Administration has agglomerated irrational and illegal powers to the presidency at the expense of other levels of government. Nor can it be denied that he deliberated manipulated truth to gain public approval for a war that was only ever about oil. With his conduct in office, Bush has so sullied the presidency that without the redress and reckoning of impeachment, the imbalances he has created will hereafter become the standard. • Loss of freedom

Mainstream Irish Paper Dares to Question What Few Others Have
From Ireland’s Independent.ie media company and writer Kevin Myers comes a deliberate and unapologetic opinion piece that sounds much like my own cry from the rooftops. (Hat-tip: Emperor Palpatine): Forget lily-livered liberalism, time to take stand and say we don’t want Muslim immigrants LET me ask you something. Is it a rational decision for a secular-Christian society to admit thousands of Muslims into its midst? Comparable movements of Christians into Muslim societies are not permitted, so what essential, non-negotiable, mutually respected right is involved? The question is especially apposite, because we now know the consequences for every single European society which has admitted large numbers of Muslims: social alienation, religious antagonism and outright terrorism. We know this. We all know it. And yet we continue to allow Muslim immigration. Why? What do we gain from it? Well, up until two weeks ago you might have said, more doctors - for when Mary Harney decla
