No, we didn’t dine with the Bush family, but we did drive by George Sr’s compound. The town was gorgeous, and nearby Goose Rocks beach provided some great sunrise photos. He actually looks more like the Mets ace so far than the guy they spent 147.5 million on, not a bad deal. After another another stellar outing yesterday, Maine had the following to say about how he is coming into his own and feeling more comfortable. Of course Maine, who has a very "Ho hum" approach with the media did not make a big deal of it. This comes from the NY Post:"I felt comfortable enough this time around to put my name on the car list," Maine said, referring to the list of rostered players whose cars the Mets will drive back to New York this week. "That was different." I love the way Maine handles himself with the media. Remember what he said after being dictated his 2008 salary a few week

Astros on the mound: Right-hander Jack Cassel allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in his three innings. The earned run was the home run by Reyes. A squeeze by the Mets' Hernandez

      Maine: Silly's (Portland)
Just to make things confusing SideO'Fries keeps us up on Portland East (if you read the NY Times you know Portland is ready to franchise our cities name and open them up all over the country).Greetings from the other Portland! Silly's is one of the town's funkier establishments and they were standing room only this Sunday afternoon. This single burger ($5.75) is a 1/3 lb served here with avocado sauce ($2 extra) and sweet potato fries ($1 extra). They also do veggie burgers and double or triple patties and will top them with bacon, chili, cole slaw, or various cheeses. Came with lettuce, mild white onions, pickle slices, but no tomato. That's sweet mustard sauce for dipping the sweet potato fries, which were big and thick, and much better than the regular fries someone else ordered.

      Spring Break....in Maine?!?!
Contrary to every reasonable expectation, I'm actually going someplace colder for Spring Break. My girlfriend's family lives in Portland, so we will be there for the next week. Of course, you know what that means: even less posting then I've already been doing! If you promise not to leave me altogether, I promise to make cameo appearances over the break and give you just enough to keep you coming back.Deal? I hope so.Also, I won't be keeping up with the "Daily Dose" while I'm away, but not to worry. There's still a way for you to read each day's entry. For the G. K. Chesterton quote of the day, go here. For the Catholic Tradition quote of the day, go here. Finally, don't forget that nominations are over and now VOTING for the 2008 Catholic Blog Awards begins on Monday, March 3, 2008 at 12:0

      Maine Papers
Remember the faux "tracking" scandal? When supporters of Sen. Collins got hot and bothered because the junior senator was videotaped...from a safe distance...at public events?More than a year before election day, Maine newspapers ran no fewer than ten stories about it. I count four articles in the Bangor Daily News alone. But Collins jumps the shark with a vicious attack linking her opponent to unpatriotic thugs (and rich Jews)--and what happens? It takes three weeks for any coverage in the local papers. And as far as I can tell, BDN and Portland Press Herald--two of the state's biggest papers--have still not run a single word about it.What's that about?

Romney Wins Maine - Race and Delegate Update
Romney won in Maine on Saturday by a landslide (he got 52% of the vote). Of course the media won't make a big deal of it because Romney won (it's only a big deal when someone they support wins). Apparently they had great voter turnout, and in some areas the biggest since Ronald Reagan was running in the 80's. The best part is that McCain got two huge (or at least he thinks they are) endorsements from two Maine Senators and is still getting slain by Romney. Heck, Ron Paul is in a close race with McCain for second (good job Ron)! Well done Maine ... you are an example for the rest of us and vote like true conservatives should ... you know ... for conservatives (not male versions of Hilary Clinton)! Maine has 21 delegates up for grabs (but 3 are unpledged). So Romney took all 18 availa

      Simply Ridiculous...Maine Stereotypes
Maine can be a state that is very stereotyped. [Especially if a certain person doesn’t know anything about Maine or that it is even a state for that matter. And yes, these people do exist.] These are just some stereotypes that I thought up. Most of them are not true, but there are some with a degree of truth to them. See if you agree [if you know Maine] or just have fun!/There are moose EVERYWHERE and you see them at least once a week [This is definitely not true. I have seen a moose twice while I have been in Maine.]Everyone has been lobstering and loves to eat lobster or any other type of seafood [I do know several people who have been lobstering but not many. A lot of people do love seafood, however, I am one of the exceptions because I hate seafood.]“Wicked” is the favorite descr

At Frank Ridley's Different Drummer Workshop the toys are all wooden, handcrafted in Solon, Maine, and are made from solid white pine or maple wood. Best yet, the toys are simply sanded smooth after being carved with no finishes [or paint] of any kind. Your lead worrying days are over [well at least when you are buying from the Different Drummer Workshop.] Only the toys designated for bath time have a thin coat of varnish sanded in. -[Which are recommended for toddlers past the “chewing” stage] These toys obviously aren’t going to keep a 9 or 10 year old content, but they are good for the youngsters who might otherwise be chewing on lead-coa

Maine. The one word that comes to mind when I think of this beautiful state is home. Maine holds so much to love and so much to discover. There are just so many different irresistible parts of Maine I adore.I woke up today, and I looked out of my foggy window to see the trees and bushes coated with a fresh layer of icy snow. Immediately, I shot out of bed to reach my camera. It is becoming a tradition lately that when it snows I have to take many, many, [and trust me I mean MANY], pictures of the outdoors. When I eventually came inside, with a pink, tingling nose and almost numb fingers, I curled up with a dreamy mug of got chocolate in front of the fire; my ideal way of starting off the day. This is how everyday would be if I could write the storyline of my life.Winter isn’t the only asp

Pups from a puppy mill in Maine to be up for adoption soon!
Hundreds of dogs seized from a puppy mill will soon be put up for adoption by three animal shelters in Maine. The animals include about 250 dogs -- miniature Australian shepherds, Brussels griffons, bulldogs, shelties and other breeds -- that were seized from the J'aime Kennel in Buxton in August. Those dogs have since given birth to more than 100 puppies, which are also being put up for adoption. The animals are now being spayed and neutered and will be released for adoption over the next several weeks. The animal shelters involved in the adoptions are The Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk, the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook and the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Lewiston. Those three facilities have about 130 of the dogs among them, with the rest placed at a Portland facility leased by the state's Animal Welfare Program. For more information read the story from Boston.com.

      Mooney: Maine Wants New Leaders
Am I wrong to read this Op-Ed by Republican second district congressional candidate Thomas Cornelius Mooney as a slap at Sen. Collins? I don't think so:A palpable sense of desperation was evident in the voice of most every person involved in this teleconference. And while Sen. Collins was very empathetic and considerate in her responses to them, one couldn’t help but come away with the sense that a majority of Mainers remain deeply dissatisfied with our leaders, and that our nation is very much on the wrong track.[...]Americans must now elect new, more courageous leadership to help transform our nation; to reprioritize spending, and invest in our own people, for this season, and for seasons to come.

5 Things You Must Know Before You Buy Live Maine Lobsters 1. Not all lobsters are created equalEvery company online claims to sell live Maine lobsters, but the truth is that most lobster comes from all over New England, and even some from Canada. Lobsters are shellfish, which filter water and therefore their taste is dependant on water temperature and quality. The colder, and cleaner the water, the better the lobster. It is recommended to purchase lobster form a source in Maine, New Hampshire or Canada, where the water is cold and the pollution is minimal.2. Know what you're paying for. Shipping or Lobsters? If you try to compare the prices of lobster online one of the first things you'll notice is that the prices are all over the place. Some retailers include shipping, some retailers charge a flat rate, and some charge the actual shipping cost. This can make it incredibly confusing when trying to find the best prices. To find the best price, you should calculate the price of two chick

Maine School Giving Birth Control to 11 year old Students Ordered to Obey the Law
You may remember this story I posted about not too long ago. It is about the King Middle School in Portland Maine that will give out birth control to 11 year old children without parental consent and without ever notifying the child’s parents. Well I now have an update on the story, and it is a positive one. After King Middle School moves to offer birth control, the District Attorney says schools must report anyone under age 14 who’s having sex. Portland’s school-based health centers have not been reporting all illegal sexual activity involving minors as required by law, but they will from now on, city officials said Thursday. “When it’s somebody under age 14, it is a crime and it must be reported,” Anderson said. “The health care provider has no discretion in the matter. It’s up to the district attorney to decide.” Anderson said she contacted Portland officials after she learned that some employees of the health centers, which ar

Maine School to Offer Birth Control to 11 Year Old Students
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that a Maine School would offer free birth control to 11 year old  students after this controversial field trip to planned parenthood sponsored by a New Hampshire group for middle school students. But I still find it disgraceful. Students who have parental permission to be treated at King Middle School’s health center would be able to get birth control prescriptions under a proposal that the Portland School Committee will consider Wednesday. The proposal would build on the King Student Health Center’s practice of providing condoms as part of its reproductive health program since it opened in 2000, said Lisa Belanger, a nurse practitioner who oversees the city’s student health centers. If the committee approves the King proposal, it would be the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to some students in grades 6 to 8, said Nancy Birkhimer, director of teen health programs for the Maine Dep

California To Copy Maine and Nebraska
An initiative is brewing in California to change the way that California's electoral college votes are allocated. If the initiative qualifies for the ballot, and passes with a sufficient margin in the state's June 2008 election, California would award two of its electoral votes to the at-large winner of the state in the general election, and then split 53 of its 55 electoral votes based on how each House district within the state votes. Currently, Nebraska and Maine allocate their electoral votes this way, and they have been largely ignored in general Presidential elections. All of the other states allocate their electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis. California is currently the richest prize in the Electoral College, with 55 votes going to the plurality winner of California's general election -- which, given current and most reasonably foreseeable political circumstances for 2008 (and likely for 2012, at least) are votes that the Democrats can bank on.* In other words, if
