Despite a stronger than expected showing by the Mahdi Army, the government forces supported by US troops are winning and showing no signs of backing down. Following classic Islamist strategy al-Sadr now seeks a truce. Will the Maliki government take the opportunity to destroy them or force them to disarm and disband once and for all?
While the size of the Mahdi Army is a constant source of debate, media accounts often put the Mahdi Army at anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 fighters. With an estimated 1,000 Mahdi fighters killed, captured, wounded and surrendered, the Mahdi Army has taken an attrition rate of 1.5 to 2.5 percent over the past five days. Mahdi fighters in Basra./Associated Press photoFor all the proclamations that the surge is working in Iraq and the US military has finally got a handle on properly training and keeping a strong Iraq army and police force, just take a looksee at this London Times article. At the end of the day, members of Basra's police force eagerly switch sides when faced with the prospect of fighting against al-Mahdi Army personnel. And this quote from police officer-turned-Mahdi fighter Abu Iman sums up how the Iraqis view the British occupation Basra and its withdrawal in December: “We know the outcome of the fighting in advance because we already defeated the British in the streets of Basra and forced them to withdraw to their base.” The bottom line is simply that an occupation force can't buy loya
Fighting has erupted in Iraq between government forces and Moqtaqa al-Sadr's Mahdi Army as government forces attempt to wrest control of Basra away from al-Sadr. Clashes have spread to Baghdad and other cities, and large street protests against the government are occurring in Shia neighborhoods of Baghdad sympathetic to al-Sadr. A weekend-long curfew - really a lockdown - has been ordered in Baghdad in an effort to prevent violence from escalating further there.
Street battles that started Tuesday in Basra and Sadr City have spread to several other neighborhoods and southern cities, leaving more than 200 dead, including civilians, Iraqi troops and militants. That three-day figure was a rough estimate provided by police and hospital officials who could not give a more specific breakdown.
Violence continues spreading across southern regions of Iraq and into Baghdad after at least 12 people were killed in Basra. A spokesperson for British forces, which are at the Basra airport, said the Iraqi army had mounted a cordon around two districts of the city and the police were attacking rebel outposts. Meanwhile, five [...]
Senator John McCain is boasting that his ideas to increase the number of American troops has produced the components of victory in Iraq. Usnfortunately, he forgot to inform the Mahdi militia of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr the surge was working. Armed Mahdi militia appeared on the streets of Baghdad for the first time in [...]
I love lunching with my girlfriends, not only are they the sweetest and funniest group of women on earth, they always carry the best bags ! Especially my friend Kim, she's the only person in the world who induces bag envy in me so you can only imagine how delicious her bag collection is.Kim and I joined our crew at Neiman Marcus downtown for juicy brisket and lobster salad the other day and one of the girls had a bag that I could not take my eyes off. It was a luscious cream colored Anaconda bag trimmed in buttery soft cream suede. Do you want to melt now or should I continue? I kept asking to see it and really just wanted to steal it from her but she had about 10 pounds of "stuff" in it so it would have been hard to discreetly stick it in my Valextra Boston bag and run off with it. So what was this bag that captured my attention through lunch you ask? It was the Mahdi from Jimmy Choo, are you surprised? I'd never seen the Anaconda version of the Mahdi before and it looked completely
Sathya Sai Baba has been heralded as the Islamic messiah, the Mahdi and much has been written to try to prove he is the one… it is even publicised in a faked translation of Persian prophetic texts in Sai Baba’s self-glorifying Chaitanya Jyoti museum at Prashanthi Nilayam. It appears, however, that he is not accepted as the Mahdi by certain prominent religious-political Islamic figures….

“Missed by some observers in Ahmadinejad’s speech at the U.N. was his call to the “mighty Lord” to hasten the emergence of “the promised one,” the one who “will fill this world with justice and peace.”

Provisional Friday Prayer Leader of Tehran Ayatollah Mohammad Kashani sermonizing before a standing room only congregation said: "US administration is propagating a certain version of Christianity that is not based on Jesus Christ (PBUH) teachings, but after securing Zionists' interests. Based on this mentality, the Jews must gather in Palestine and then in the course of a revolution two thirds of them to get killed, and the remainder should see the reappearance of Jesus (PBUH). Therefore, they are after gathering the entire Jews of the world in Palestine, which is definitely a move with political and Satanic roots, but the idea is put forth in the framework of an idea behind the hope for reappearance of Messiah. US President George W. Bush is the standard bearer of that mentality. That man is loathed to an extent in the United States today that the mentality he supports, too, has very limited number of supporters." They have Satanic interactions with the Zionists, b

The Mahdi has about the same success rate as Jesus: abysmal. Whenever he shows up (this time in India), he's always thrown in jail. It's just not easy being divine and misunderstood (found this one via Jihad Watch):
Twelve people who were arrested yesterday for tutoring Muslim youths to wage a holy war, are followers of the controversial Mehdi sect, which believes that the 'prophet' would come to this world again when injustice increases.
One of the arrested, Mohammed Shakil, claimed that he was Mehdi and would become omnipotent in a few years.
A bit of bad timing, there. Why didn't he wait until he was omnipotent before he started his cult? By the way, maybe someone should inform Iran's thug-in-chief that his hero has already come and gone.

I wasnt at all shocked when I was reading a liberal blog the other day and some dimwit was waxing eloquent on how we should be sucking up to Muqtada al-Sadr. The reasoning was that he controlled the mahdi militia and violence from them had dropped off while Sadr was in hiding in Iran recently. Huh? I wish I had a link to it but if I saved a link for every dumb ass post online by liberals I would be buried in them. But then these are the same people that loved Saddam Hussein, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. He has recently contacted the Maliki government demanding an end to assassination attempts. It sounds like he is sweating things a wee bit. Anyway, it looks like we are putting some much deserved pressure on that little fat fuck al-Sadr and hopefully he will be getting his 72 virgins in the not too distant future. ~RJH MyWay News article link Mahdi Militia Hit by U.S., Iraqi TroopsBAGHDAD (AP) - As U.S. jets roared overhead, Mahdi Army militiamen on Sunday battled with Iraqi troops a

PODCAST OF THIS ARTICLETHE PRESIDENT: It is such an honor to welcome the Vice President of a free Iraq to the Oval Office. Mr. Vice President, I appreciate your courage. I don't know if the citizens of my country know, but the other day, a killer tried to take your life. And fortunately, you sit here, and you speak with enthusiasm and optimism about the future of your country. One of the reasons why -- the main reason why I've reinforced our troops in Iraq is to give leaders such as yourself the opportunity to do the hard work of reconciliation. I appreciate very much the progress that you're making. I know it's hard work. It's hard work to overcome distrust that has built up over the years because your country was ruled by a tyrant that created distrust amongst people. But you, Mr. Vice President, are showing strong vision, and a vision of peace
Lobby Dick has decided : the US must bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. W is almost ready, just making sure he doesn't need any agreement from the Congress, that ugly and totally unnecessary offspring of democracy.Make no mistake : just like the invasion of Iraq, this attack has nothing to do with the official agenda. Preventing WMD proliferation, getting rid of a dictatorship, and even securing juicy contracts for big corporations... all these are mere alibis, the Bush Administration's usual sales pitch*.The aim of the game is to accelerate the final showdown between Iran and Israel before the World's most important regime change : Lord Dubya's rule is bound to end by 2008, and this mad crusader has yet to fulfill his most important task ; the so called Bible Prophecy. If you missed the previous episodes, here's the story : Bush believes Jesus Christ's Second Coming will be provoqued by the ultimate war between Israel and Iran. Crazy enough ? There's more : the Shiite sect to whic
