Reports surfaced a few weeks ago that the Brickell luxury condominium project known as Villa Magna was canceled. Miami Today News reported earlier today that the project may move forward but with a significant change in the development plan. Villa Magna developer, Tibor Hollo, wants to replace 178,506 square feet of condominiums with hotel suites.
The 2.5 acre development site of the $200 million project known as Villa Magna is located at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive. It is the last bayfront parcel in Brickell. The previous plan called for 1,120 total condominium units.
The article mentions that local hospitality experts feel that competing with nearby luxury hotel brands such as the Mandarin Oriental and the Four Seasons Hotel would be a bad move by Mr. Hollo.
It will be interesting to see what becomes of this valuable parcel of land in the coming months. I will keep you posted as new information becomes available.
Rumor has it that Villa Magna has decided NOT to move forward, and will be returning deposits. Some say it’s because they decided not to build, others say it’s because there is a high-roller interested in the land.
Either way, I think the decision not to go forward in an already saturated Brickell condo market is an excellent decision.
One down, how many others not going up?
Villa Magna is/was being developed by Florida East Coast Realty. The project was to have approximately 750 units in two 55 story towers located at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive.

In a magnanimous gesture, Canadian-based Magna International has offered to help Cerberus expand Chrysler's international operations. Magna, once the front runner to buy Chrysler, is expanding into Russia and wants to take Chrysler with them. Magna's president Mark Hogan told Reuters, "Chrysler has done a good job of establishing a distribution network in western Europe and to a lesser extent in eastern Europe. We can probably help them as we establish ourselves in Russia." Chrysler is moving production of their Euro-spec 300's from Magna's Graz, Austria facility to their own in Ontario, so Magna needs to keep their ties with the company somehow.
