Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera April 28th 2007. Click image for larger view. In this picture you can see a small butterfish (Pholis gunnellus) that I found under a rock when the tide was out. It is about 20 cm long and got its name because it has very slippery skin. When I was a kid I used to play at the coast all the time. One of my favorite activities was to look under rocks and seaweed when the tide was out. There was always something interesting to find, like a butterfish, a crab or some funky colored periwinkles. Time for a picture from the spring to remind ourselves of warmer times to come The Primula got it’s name from the Latin word Primus that means “the first one”. It got it’s name because it is one of the first flowers to blossom in the spring. The flowers are native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere, south into high altitude tropical mountains in Ethiopia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and are also found in temperate southern South America. There are amazingly 400-500 species of Primula and some of species are called primrose, auricula, cowslip and oxlip. I have just seen a handful, but there are some really nice color combinations out there. Up here in the north it is a very usual garden flower and it is spreading everywhere. In these photos I have captured the last remains of summer here in Northern Norway. These flowers are from the calendula plant, also known as pot marigold. I was amazed how long these plants were able to survive. They were even flowering after some nights with frost. The first photo is of an orange calendula flower that look relatively fresh.
