From the FOCUS News Agency : The European Union changes under Greece's pressure documents already adopted for Macedonia to replace the word "Macedonian" with FYROM /Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia/, Macedonian newspaper Dnevnik reports today, quoting diplomatic sources. The position of the European Economic and Social Committee adopted on the 12th of March is now being revised. The explanation is that the version published on the Committee's web page is not final. According to the paper's sources the revise is exactly about changing the expressions as "Macedonian civil society" into "civil society of FYROM."

The Macedonian Question, 1878-1908. 1. MACEDONIA AND THE TREATY OF BERLIN. The region known as Macedonia may be roughly defined as the basins of the Vardar, Struma, and Mesta Zara Rivers, except the headwaters of the Struma. Nowhere in the Balkan peninsula or in the Near East are races and nationalities so inextricably intermingled as in Macedonia. The population includes large numbers of Bulgars, Greeks, Serbs, Roumanian Vlacks, Turks and Jews. Much of the difficulty of the Macedonian problem lies in the communal antagonisms of these peoples, and in the ambitions of the neighboring Balkan States, and in the sympathy of their inhabitants for the Macedonian members of their own nationality. The strategic position of Macedonia, especially Salonika, controlling one of the principal highways of trade between the Near East and central and western Europe and the Drang nach Osten ambitions of the Dual Monarchy added to the complexity and difficulty of the problem. That the Macedonian questio

BULGARIAN AND MACEDONIANBulgarian is the official language of the Republic of Bulgaria and is spoken as their native language by about 8.5 million people within the boundaries of Bulgaria. It belongs to the groups of South Slavonic languages, alongside Serbo-Croat and Slovene, and is also one of the Balkan languages (forming the Balkan Sprachbund), together with Romanian, Albanian, Modern Greek and, partially, Serbian. The issue of the Macedonian language, in official use as separate literary language in the Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia since 1944 (about 1.5 million speakers), is heavily charged with political emotions on the part of Bulgaria, Greece, and the former Yugoslavia, and has to be approached carefully. From a strictly linguistic point of view Macedonian can be called a Bulgarian dialect, as structurally it is most similar to Bulgarian. Indeed, Bulgarian scholars reject Macedonian as an individual language, but since it now has the status of a literary language most other sch
NATURE OF STANDARD MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE by Mladen Srbinovski, "Glas", Skopje, No. 23/Dec. 1995 (Google link). PART I It is forbidden for everybody, who works on and with the language of Macedonia, to do remarks on it. From this restriction, only the people from the scientific institutions, secretly blessed by the official authorities by some strange "criteria", are excluded. The other people, which do not think like the Macedonian linguists and historians, and dare to express openly a disagreement, are under many troubles and dangers. ...My opinion on the forbidden Macedonian subjects is a humble one, but on the other hand, is completely mine. Similar is my opinion on the nature of the standard Macedonian language, the language on which I am educated and brought up, the language which I use and on which I write. Everybody can reach to similar concept of Macedonian traumas if decides to study the Macedonian problematics - it is not necessary a high intelectual level, only a bit of ho
Confessions of a Macedonian Banditby Albert Sonnichsen(New York: Duffield & Co., 1909)Chapter XXIV: Confession of the Melancholy Brigand After leaving Apostol we began gradually shaping our course northward. Crossing the River Vardar we came into Kukush, and there, in the extensive cane brakes of Lake Amatov, we met and spent several days with Damion Grueff. He was on a tour arranging the elections of delegates for the coming annual general congress, to be held up close to the Bulgarian frontier. I took, then, a photograph of this prominent leader; I little thought then of the value this portrait would have to Macedonians. A little more than a month later Grueff was killed in a skirmish with asker. There were just six of us, and for five days we had been dodging military patrols, which is no college sport under a hundred rounds of ammunition, a Manlicher rifle and a twenty-pound, goats' hair cloak. On the sixth day we came to the lower slopes of the S

The Life of Christo MatovChristo Matov was born in March 1872, in the city of Struga, in western Macedonia. Upon receiving his education in the Bulgarian schools in Macedonia, he chose as his career the profession of teaching. In 1895, while in Salonica, Matov was initiated into the IMRO by Gruev. His education warranted his appointment as director of the Bulgarian pedagogical school of Skopie. As head of this important school he attained the unusual influence in the entire district. With the cooperation of Petar Matsanov, Stefan Petrov, and Vladimir Boyadjiev, he established the local revolutionary committee of Skopie. Matov's influence and activity in the Skopie district was of great consequence upon the growth of the IMRO. In less than a year as head of the Bulgarian school of Skopie, he succeeded in organizing, with the cooperation of other men from various localities, a revolutionary committee in each and every town and village in the district of Skopie. In 1898 he was elected as
