"...The idea that Macedonia might have a future independent of the Bulgarians had already arisen as far back as 1876, when schemes for a "Macedonian Province" had been promoted at the conference of Constantinople, but the idea had not been associated then with any differences between Macedonian Slavs and Bulgarians. At that time the Bulgarian character of the Slavs of Macedonia went unchallenged. It was not until after 1885, when strained relations between Bulgaria and Serbia developed, that the Serbian claims in Macedonia gave rise to the speculation that the Slavs in Macedonia Might be different from those of Bulgaria. In 1887, P.D Draganov tentatively put forward this idea in Les Nouvelles Slaves (1887-8) N.S. Zaryanko, the Russian cartographer, by omitting to colour the Slavs of Macedo
In 1995, the social anthropologist from the US, Kate S. Brown, tried to examine this success with the help of the “national imagination” in the now independent Macedonia, and, toward this aim, formulated the following leading question:"In the 1990s, Macedonians speak a language codified in 1946, spoken by less than two million people, and with a very slender literature. They are members of an Orthodox Church whose authority was established by a socialist political regime in 1968. They are heirs to a 1903 revolution that until the 1940s was described by almost all sources as being Bulgarian. They are descendants from people who were called, and at times called themselves, Serbs or Bulgarians. They have no modern history of independent statehood; the last period that they can claim as bo
On the face of it, the Greek protests seem pretty silly. It is true that in ancient times, Macedonia was part of the Greek-speaking world, the northernmost cultural and linguistic outpost of peninsular Greece; true, too, that Alexander (356-323 BCE) and his father, Phillip, who unified ancient Greece by military conquest, were every bit as Greek as Plato and Aristotle (who tutored Alexander when the latter was a boy); true as well that the Greeks call the northern region of Greece "Macedonia" to this day; true, too, that this region is where Phillip and Alexander hailed from. But Slavic tribes overran part of historical Macedonia as long ago as the early Middle Ages, and after World War II, communist Yugoslavia named its southernmost province The People's Republic of Macedonia.

During World War I Gradesnica, Macedonia, was part of the front lines with Germans facing French troops. More than 90 years later, villagers have uncovered vintage Cognac and wine that historians believe was buried by French troops who were either killed or forgot to dig up the alcohol rations. The first Cognac was uncovered in the old trenches about 15 years ago. Since then people exploring the old trenches and farmers plowing fields have discovered additional bottles often two cases at a time.Gradesnica is located close to the border with Greece. French and other foreign fighters had joined with the Serbs to try to stop advancing German and Bulgarian troops. Bottles found in the trenches could be quite valuable, but locals say they have consumed everything they have found.

In Acts 16:6-15 we see one of the heroes of the New Testament at moment of decision. The Apostle Paul was on a mission. He was taking a message of hope to the world. He was proclaiming new life in Jesus to everyone he encountered. Some loved what they heard and others burned with rage. He would know many troubles because of this message; but the troubles from chains to shipwrecks to
Veria (officially transliterated as Veroia, Greek Βέροια or Βέρροια - Véria) is a city in Greece. It is a commercial center of Greek Macedonia, the capital of the prefecture of Imathia, the province of Imathia and the seat of a bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church. Veria is on the site of the ancient city of Beroea (called Berea in some translations of the Bible), which was prominent from the 4th century BC and part of the Kingdom of Macedon. Part of Rome from 168 BC, both Paul and Silas preached there in AD 54 or 55 (see Bereans). Diocletian made the large and populous city one of two capitals of the Roman Province of Macedonia, and it was one of the earliest cities to become the seat of a bishop. Invaded by Slavs, it was conquered by the Ottomans in 1361, who named it Kara Ferye. It was incorporated into the Greek state in 1912.Veria since the 1980s is bypassed and is linked by the superhighway linking to GR-1. GR-4/Via Egnatia runs through Veria and also the road to Ede
Here’s some interesting news. Last year David Beckham’s armored BMW X5 was stolen from Spain capital, Madrid. Through some strange coincidence, the bodyguard who took care of the car “forgot” to start the tracking program which monitors the car and prevents thefts like this. Strange for someone who is probably paid very good for this job. The soccer superstar bought this car after a kidnap attempt made on his wife, Victoria.
The $180,000 car was seized by the Macedonian police after two guys, apparently from the Bulgarian mafia, were caught at the Greece border. The Macedonian interior minister, who currently uses the car, said that she will gladly return the car to the soccer star if it turns out its his car. No reaction so far from Beckham, who now lives in the US, after signing a whooping $250 million five-year contract with LA Galaxy. (more…)
The Macedonian Question, 1878-1908. 1. MACEDONIA AND THE TREATY OF BERLIN. The region known as Macedonia may be roughly defined as the basins of the Vardar, Struma, and Mesta Zara Rivers, except the headwaters of the Struma. Nowhere in the Balkan peninsula or in the Near East are races and nationalities so inextricably intermingled as in Macedonia. The population includes large numbers of Bulgars, Greeks, Serbs, Roumanian Vlacks, Turks and Jews. Much of the difficulty of the Macedonian problem lies in the communal antagonisms of these peoples, and in the ambitions of the neighboring Balkan States, and in the sympathy of their inhabitants for the Macedonian members of their own nationality. The strategic position of Macedonia, especially Salonika, controlling one of the principal highways of trade between the Near East and central and western Europe and the Drang nach Osten ambitions of the Dual Monarchy added to the complexity and difficulty of the problem. That the Macedonian questio

This was, moreover, recognized by the managers of the Olympic games, on the occasion when Alexander [I Philhellenes] wished to compete and his Greek competiotors tried to exclude him on the ground that foreigners were not allowed to take part. What is Macedonia?Macedonia is a geographical and historical region of the Balkan peninsula in south-eastern Europe whose area was re-defined in the early 20th century. It covers about 67,000 square kilometres and a population of 4.76 million. The territory corresponds to the basins of (from west to east) the Aliákmon, Vardar/Axios and Struma/Strymon rivers (of which the Axios/Vardar drains by far the largest area) and the plains around Thessaloniki and Serres.http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=2lln1v89b3k1w?tname=macedonia-region&sbid=lc10a
Etymology of the name of Macedonia According to ancient Greek mythology, Macedon - ancient Greek Μακεδών MakedÅn, poetic Μακηδών MakÄ“dÅn - was the name of the first phylarch (tribal chief) of the Μακεδόνες Makedónes, the part of the Μακεδνοί Makednoà tribe which initially settled western, southern and central Macedonia and founded the kingdom of Macedon. Αccording to Herodotus (Histories 8.47), the Makednoà were in turn a tribe of the Dorians. All these names are probably derived from the Doric adjective μακεδνός makednós (Attic μηκεδανός mÄ“kedanós), meaning "tall". This in turn is derived from the Doric noun μᾶκος mÄkos (Attic and modern Greek μάκÏος mákros and μῆκος mÄ“kos), meaning "length". Both the Macedonians (Makedónes) and their Makednoà tribal ancestors were regarded as tall people, and they are likely to have received their name on account of their height.
