Brummett has himself a detractor...a woman we once mistook for a polygamist. Seems he wrote something she didn't like about her husband, the right reverend Jimmy holt.
Next I heard, Bobye had fired off a hostile public letter about me, spreading it from blog to blog, asserting, among other things, that I'm "bitter at God" for the bad things I've seen happen to my family.
Wow, did he hit a nerve

Last night, I started listening to this:
Not knowing how good it would be, I checked it out from the library. I sat down with my headphones, opened the play, and followed along. It's phenomenal -- a great way to experience Shakespeare.
It looks like Arkangel has done all 38 of Shakespeare's plays. I'm not sure I'm interested in reading all of them, but I will be buying the audiobooks for his
Today we'll talk about the imagery of light and darkness.Light is the symbol of knowledge and goodness while darkness is the symbol of evil and theft. A deep pal of darkness surrounds the whole play from beginning to end. Most of the scenes that crowd to our mind are the scenes of darkness. For example, the King Duncan is murdered in his sleep at night when it is too dark for anyone to see. Banquo is also killed at night. The night is so dark that he asks his son Fleance to bring a torch. Even Lady Macbeth, before her death sees only darkness around her. Therefore, she has asked her chamber servants to keep a torch lighted all the time. Even when there is any light, it is earnestly desired that the light be turned into darkness when Macbeth hears that Malcolm will be the Prince of Scotland, he appeals to the stars “hide your fires” so that his darkness remains invisible to the human eye. After this he only thinks of darkness and “thick night” whenever he wants to act. For exam
The other image which recurs in the play is that of robes too big and unfit for Macbeth. Indeed, from the very beginning of the play, Macbeth is aware that the honours due to a King are too much for a person like him. When he learns from Rosse that he has been made the Thane of Cawdor, he asks:“…Why do you dress meIn borrow’d robes?” Even Banquo uses this image of robes and says: “New honours come upon him, Like our strange garments.” When Duncan has supped and is resting in Macbeth’s home, he (Macbeth) expresses his inability to his wife doing the dark deed. He says that he has earned a good reputation from all sorts of people, which is like robes I “their newest gloss”, which he cannot throw down so soon. At this, continuing this image of robes his wife asks him if he was drund when he hoped to wear those robes. After the murder of Duncan, when Rosse says that he is going to Macbeth’s coronation,
Commenting on the rich, vivid and varied imagery used by Shakespeare in ‘Macbeth’, A.C. Bradley says, “The vividness, magnitude and violence of the imagery…are characteristic of Macbeth almost throughout.” Indeed, from the very beginning till the end there are several symbols, similes and images invoked by the dramatist to lend to the play the characteristic horror, terror and darkness of human soul. Some of the recurring images in ‘Macbeth’ are those of clothes too big for Macbeth, creating the impression that he is a comic figure; the image of blood, bloody dagger and bloody hands; the image of sounds like thunder and its echo, the image of the speeding horses and images created with the help of animals, birds, reptiles; as well as the image of darkness and blackness all around. The play opens with a sound of thunder in which the three witches appear, at a deserted place. The sound of thunder is heard several times throughout the play, for example, when the witches app
Lady Macbeth essay is usually assigned while taking an English literature Class. The task presupposes a thorough examining a well-known Shakespearean play Macbeth, and one of the main characters, Lady Macbeth, in particular.
Lady Macbeth is an unusual person which contradicts the typical woman. Regarding this we suggest you to discuss such rather controversial issues in your Lady Macbeth essay, as: (more…)
The disgraceful anti-war activist who posed as former soldier is now going to the slammer (Hat tip: Tim Blair and LGF):
A Tacoma man who falsely claimed he was a decorated war hero when he took the stage at demonstrations held in opposition to the U.S.’s role in Iraq was sentenced this morning to five months in prison in U.S. District Court in Seattle.
Jesse MacBeth, 23, was also sentenced to

The proms, for the Glyndebourne Prom, their performance of Verdi's Macbeth. First of all, though we had to negotiate the perils of getting into and around the Albert Hall. There were huge queues at the doors, as attendants were searching bags. Luckily some of the attendants had sense and were redirecting people to doors where there were no queues.Still, what we were left with was the sheer intensity of the individual performances. Whether the cut-down production worked or not, the soloists delivered stunning performances. Stanislav Shvets made a fine, meliflous Banquo; very much a cut above the barking, older bass that we can sometimes expect in this role. He seemed to have developed a real dialogue with Macbeth in the opening scenes. His appearance as a ghostly card-board box was one of the other less helpful bits of production business. This was also true in the ballet when the 3 actresses were joined by 3 others garbed as a skeleton, a mummy etc. Looking at the production photos aga

If it wasn’t for the very recognizable title I wouldn’t have a clue that this was the poster for some sort of Shakespeare adaptation. Instead, I would probably peg it as the poster for some new Horror/Adventure film. Probably one with Vampires. Or Werewolves. Or both.
I wonder what the goal of this poster was. Perhaps it is meant to make the movie seem exciting to the Horror/Adventure crowd, in an attempt to reach a broader audience. After all, there aren’t that many Shakespeare heads out there, and even most of those weren’t going to be that interested in such a modern and violent adaptation of the bards work. But wonder if they aren’t downplaying too much the Shakespeare aspect, since it is one of the main selling points of the film.
Then again, maybe the title is enough for people to make the connection. And I sure as hell don’t know how they could tie the poster better with the original work.

Check out WCBS-TV's video from Macbeth. It has a little less yak than the NY1 so that we get to hear a bit of the "all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand" speech (and an impressive yowl). The review is a little lukewarm though. In contrast, Hilton Als of the New Yorker finds freshness in the gender-bending theme and depiction of the Macbeths as a "fractured political family".In Ehle, [Kaufman] has a willing collaborator. At the start of the play, Lady Macbeth receives a letter that her husband, a legendarily fierce Scottish general, has sent from the front, where he has helped save Scotland from a hostile takeover by the King of Norway. Macbeth tells her of the Weird Sisters' prophecy that he will one day be king. As she reads, Lady Macbeth finds herself dreaming of the blood yet to be spilled—of the rivers that will flow if only she can guide Macbeth to power. The blood that will stain her husband's hands is less offensive to her than her own menstrual blo
Malcolm Johnson of the Hartford Courant gives descriptive report of Macbeth. In CurtainUp's review Les Gutman admires the leads' elocution but finds their marital passion lacking, and William Wolf doesn't feel it either. But look, there's video! NY1 has a RealPlayer-format review with clips from the play. Roma Torre doesn't get Ms Ehle's interpretation though. Luckily Michael Criscuolo of nytheater.com does:As for the performances, Liev Schreiber is a blessing as Macbeth. His is not a flashy performance, just a solid, grounded one, in which he reveals a deep understanding of the role. His Macbeth is not ambitious or power-hungry—he's just a good soldier who makes a bad decision (albeit, one that triggers a domino effect from which he cannot extricate himself). Schreiber plays him as a once strong man who breaks himself. Indeed, the Thane of Cawdor shall sleep no more, as Schreiber uses Macbeth's foretold insomnia to escalate his deterioration. He's the perfect antithesis to J

Let's start with a report sent by Katie Heape of Cincinnati (thanks!).I just got back from a vacation to New York City. I saw Macbeth two nights in a row and I must say it was wonderful! I have never enjoyed Shakespeare more. It rained both days I was in line for tickets but it was worth it. Liev Schreiber was great as Macbeth. He played the part with such conviction. Jennifer Ehle was very convincing as Lady Macbeth. She was the perfect match for Liev. And I have never seen Jennifer look more beautiful. She looked radiant. The first night I saw Macbeth it drizzled through most of the performance. But the actor's were troopers and the show went on. The stage was pretty wet just before the intermission and I was afraid that Jennifer would slip in her heels. But thankfully she didn't and the show was great. After the play was finished, Liev thanked the audience for sticking it out through the weather. Now to the press. Bits mentioning Ms Ehle are excerpted.Alexis Greene of the Hollywood
Excerpts contain summaries of the review and bits about Ms Ehle.David Rooney of Variety:The complexities behind Macbeth's surrender to evil and to overpowering destiny are compellingly embodied in Schreiber's contained performance but less so in other aspects of Moises Kaufman's intermittently forceful Shakespeare in the Park production. It takes more than a commanding lead to make this most brutal and brisk of tragedies resonate fully....The doomed antihero has a glam ice queen in Jennifer Ehle's Lady Macbeth, and the sexual chemistry between her and Schreiber adds spark to their scenes. Looking like she's stepped out of the pages of a vintage movie magazine, Ehle works hard to override her natural softness; she plays the role about a decade later than Kaufman's time frame, coming across like a steely '40s film noir manipulatrix. The approach works even if Ehle is more persuasive when summoning "direst cruelty" to galvanize her wavering husband to action than when later succumb
First, Playbill interviews Liev Schreiber . My pick of the best bits (but it's all interesting):...PLAYBILL.COM: What makes Macbeth the right role for you to perform now?LS: For the Public Theater, it's a wartime play. It's something that is topical to people. I don't know if I respond to things in an openly political way. I just think they're planted in your subconscious. For me, what's fascinating about the character is the war that he wages in his mind—the interior battle of morality and conscience. It's good stuff.PLAYBILL.COM: And how do you personally compare to Macbeth?LS: Well, I've never killed anyone, so that's kind of a leap for me. But I certainly identify with the same issues of conscience. We all have ambitions and anxieties that get in the way of our daily lives. I think that Macbeth's are just all-consuming....PLAYBILL.COM: What time period does the production take place in?LS: Our director Moises Kaufman is playing with is a period that draws its i
Jason, a fan of both Macbeth and the World Cup:wednesday night was yet another treat. elvira and siblings had a spare ticket for shakespeare in the park and i was of course up to it, knowing how good those central park plays are and how difficult getting a ticket is. macbeth did not disappoint. liev schreiber (known for scary movie and the manchurian candidate) and the rest of the cast did well. also, seeing the play in an open theater under the backdrop of stars, trees, and um flying airplanes was quite magical. and as always, was nice being surrounded by a group of dutchies (especially that the germany win that day was a good starting point for conversation). And from Kerri:So I forgot how AMAZING New York can be in the summer...even if it means sweating constantly! So I've had a great past week! Last Thursday I went to see Shakespeare in the Park...Central Park! And let me tell you...it's no ordinary Shakespeare in the Park. The tickets are free, which is great, and it is in an act
Word is that people have had to queue from dawn for Shakespeare in the Park tickets before, so I e-mailed the Public Theater about how to guarantee a spot. Here's the response:Tickets are available [for free], two per person, at 1pm the day of theperformance at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park or at The Public Theater, 425 Lafayette Street (bet. E. 4th and Astor Pl.).You may become a Summer Sponsor of The Public Theater, for a $150 donation, and in return you will receive one ticket to either production of Shakespeare in the Park. For more information, please visit www.publictheater.org.
