By now you’ve heard of the ongoing controversy regarding the graphic video and accompanying “Gotcha-Gram” used to promote the new single and album of R&B artist Ashanti. Motown Complete Singles Vol 9 (1969)
Regular readers will know how much I love this series. This time out I'm going to have to not exactly give this an awful review - no sense in that; but warn you to proceed with caution. If you are a completest and already have the rest of this set, then by all means, don't even bother to read the rest of this - you need this to complete the 60's on Motown. If you do not have the rest of the series yet, I urge you to start with an earlier year. When you've collected the other years, this one will mean more. There are still hits - plenty. There are at least 15 songs here that are on constant, regular rotation on oldies stations. You can find those in many Motown collections. What makes this series great are all the songs that weren't hits that should have been. 1969 is rare in that the ones t

      MOTOWN FUNK BROTHERS
O grupo era formado por Joe Hunter and Earl Van Dyke (piano);JAMES JAMERSON (Baixo); William "Benny" Benjamin and Richard "Pistol" Allen (bateria); Robert White, Eddie Willis, and Joe Messina (guitarra); Jack Ashford (tambourine, percussão, vibes, marimba); Jack Brokensha (vibes,

Can the Lions Lure Quarles to Motown?
The Lions, a team in need of help on defense and stopping the run, may try to lure a former Buccaneer to stick around for one more season and try and help them reverse their fortunes. The St.Petersburg Times is reporting today that linebacker Shelton Quarles is getting some interest from teams around the league, and one team that is sure to make a run at him is Detroit. The 36-year-old is not even sure he wants to play in 2007, and may decide to hang up his cleats for good, but still wants to take some time to make that decision. If Quarles decided to make a move to the Lions, he would be playing with former Bucs linebackers coach Joe Barry, who is now the Lions D-coordinator, and of course Rod Marinelli, who was Quarles’ defensive coach for some time and is now the Lions head coach. Last season the Lions were flat out awful stopping the run, allowing teams 4.1 yards per carry and 2010 yards on the ground in 2006. They also gave up 18 rushing touchdowns. The Lions finished last s

V.A. - The Complete Motown Singles, Volume 3-6
V.A. - THE COMPLETE MOTOWN SINGLES, VOL.3-1963By 1963, Berry Gordy and company were fine-tuning Motown’s sound. Jumping on the charts were Martha & The Vandellas, with “Come And Get These Memories” and “Heat Wave,” signaling the emergence of the writing/production team Holland-Dozier-Holland. “Little” Stevie Wonder was No.1 with the record-breaking “Fingertips (Part 2).” Mary Wells’ “You Lost The Sweetest Boy” and “What’s Easy For Two Is So Hard For One” turned out to be a double-sided hit. The Supremes (finally!) made their Top 40 chart debut. V.A. - THE COMPLETE MOTOWN SINGLES, VOL.4-1964 The Complete Motown Singles, Volume 4: 1964, focuses on the year the company becomes an international phenomenon. Even as the Motown machine began to click founder Berry Gordy continued to hedge his bets: listen for odd novelties like the seasonal “Randy, The Newspaper Boy” by Ray Oddis, and “Set Me Free” by radio personality Lee Alan. Motown kept active its c

      V.A. - Complete Motown Singles, Vol.2 - 1962 [BOX SET]
By 1962, Motown wasn’t yet the hit factory it would later become but had regular chart success and were reaching across the ocean to influence the emerging British Invasion. The year marked the debut of four new imprints in the Motown empire: Divinity, Workshop, Mel-o-dy, and Gordy. This four-CD set offers a miraculous peek behind the curtains of what was rapidly becoming “The Sound Of Young America.” It features the A-side and B-side of every single released by Motown and its subsidiaries during the label’s fourth year of existence. Over the course of the set’s 112 tracks, you can hear The Temptations masquerading as The Pirates, the vocal version of the “Theme From Exodus,” and the phone number that was on the lips of America: “Beechwood 4-5789,” courtesy of the Marvelettes. The opulent packaging resembles a scaled-down 78-rpm-era “album,” with cardboard sleeves to hold each of the discs, and 88 pages of rare photos, detailed annotations and scholarly - as well

The Complete Motown Singles Vol 1 - 1959-1961

Grand Blvd. became ‘Hitsville U.S.A.’ The Complete Motown Singles, Part 1: 1959-1961 documents Motown’s earliest days, from Marv Johnson’s “Come To Me” on Tamla 101 through The Twistin’ Kings’ “Congo (Part 1)” on Motown 1023. This six-CD set offers an amazing insight into the development of the Motown Sound. You can follow along, single by single, as Gordy pursues his dream, often to unexpected places. It features the A-side and B-side of every single released by Motown and its subsidiaries during the label’s first three years of existence. Dreamgirls apologise to Motown
Dreamworks, the makers of Dreamgirls have run an ad in the Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety trade papers stating they are sorry for any confusion. Dreamworks apologised to record label Motown, making clear the movie is a work of fiction. Dreamgirls is widely seen as a loose version of the Supremes story. A Motown spokesperson said, the movie had upset some artists who felt the Motown label was falsely depicted in a negative light. The advert reads “Dreamgirls is a work of fiction. It is also an homage to Motown. For any confusion that has resulted from our fictional work, we apologise to Mr Gordy and all of the incredible people that were part of the great legacy. It is vital that people understand that the real Motown story has yet to be told.” Berry Gordy is pleased with the advertisement.

Motown is Abuzz About E-Prescribe - Here's Why You Should Be
The woes of the Big Three have been national news for a while now, and despite DiamlerChrysler's recent increase in buzz and market share they're not out of the woods either. What's dragging GM, Ford, and DCX down, especially with GM and Ford thriving in overseas markets and all three collectively controlling nearly half of the lucrative North American market? Among other things the rising price of healthcare for their current and retired employees, particularly the cost of prescription drugs. The Henry Ford Health System and Health Alliance Plan's E-Prescribe system is interesting enough on its own because, as I alluded to in my previous post, the automation of mundane tasks frees-up resources so that healthcare professionals can engage in more esoteric - and arguably more important - types of work. As I heard and read more and more in the local media about the importance of E-Prescribe to the automobile industry, it began to dawn on me that there's an even more important sy

      VW Blowing Off Motown?
CNNMoney reports that Volkswagen is considering moving their North American headquarters from Auburn Hills (MI) to an as-yet-undetermined location on the east coast. A "high-level manager in U.S. operations" says the company's considering the move because VeeDub's suits have trouble getting direct flights in and out of Detroit, and potential recruits are not exactly clamoring to move to Motown. Also in the mix: VW's thinking about building a second North American plant. Taking a lead out of Nissan's Nashville songbook, the German automaker might be looking to get management, marketing and manufacturing within eyesight of each other. Fearing another exodus like Comerica or Pfizer, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm's office said Tuesday the state is "in touch" with Volkswagen, but declined to "comment on rumors." If that changes, we'd welcome Jenny's shout out below.
