      Brunneby medieval church
Brunneby medieval church is a beautiful little church that does not seems to be medieval at a first glance. The church was erected in the 14th century and abandoned in 1826 and restored in the end of the 1970’s. Though both the interior and exterior of today isn’t all that medieval there are several visible signs [...]

I have found myself wandering into the library whenever I am in the city to have another look. It's worth a visit to the State Library just to see the Domed Reading Room. It was opened in 1913 and it was the largest of its type in the world on completion. The reading room was built to hold over a million books and up to 500 readers. The exhibition is on from 28 March to 15 June 2008.

      Tapestries Medieval and Renaissance Periods
Tapestries are a woven wall hanging that depicts a scene or famous painting. Medieval and renaissance tapestries were first developed in Europe to decorate castles and large churches. At first they were primarily of religious scenes and later to depict historical events. Kings and other nobility would hire artists to make a tapestry of historical battles and other events that they were engaged, especially if they won the battle. Castles and large stone churches were drafty places that are hard to keep warm during the winter. In those days, insulation was unheard of for placement in buildings to keep them warm. So…what’s worse than a huge, expensive wall on the border that doesn’t actually work? What about a moat: Faced with high-levels of crime and illegal immigration, authorities in Yuma are reaching back to a technique as old as a medieval castle to dig out a “security channel” on a crime-ridden stretch of the border and fill it with water. “The moats that I’ve seen circled the castle and allowed you to protect yourself, and that’s kind of what we’re looking at here,” said Yuma County Sheriff Ralph Ogden, who is backing the project. I hope they fill it with alligators. And pour boiling oil on the immigrants trying to swim across. Perhaps the immigrants will bring their catapults and siege engines to the party. Medieval Trading Cities
After the fall of Rome, A.D. 476, trade was an extremely hazardous undertaking as likely to result in death at the hands of pirates as in a handsome profit. By about A.D. 1000, a number of citystates had arisen whose prosperity was based on a revival of trade -Venice, Florence, Genoa, Pisa, Marseille, and Barcelona on the Mediterranean, and the Hansa cities in northern Europe. By far the wealthiest of these was Venice, whose traders were able to furnish the ships for the Crusades ( A.D. 1095-1270). Venetian traders were thus in a position to demand commercial privileges in the reopened Syrian ports. About 1400, Venice had 3,300 ships in her merchant fleet and navy, manned by 36,000 men. Venice and other trading cities opened up the old trade routes; they organized the financial institution

One of my most favorite images in Medieval painting is the hand of god reaching down out of the clouds. In certain paintings, there even appear to be flying saucers (actually, I think that's what the object looks like in the above featured icon from which the hand of God reaches). Even with great scholarship, it is difficult, if at all possible, for our modern minds to comprehend fully how the actual and interpreted landsc

This from the Canadian Press: Photo from Kercher's Facebook page. PERUGIA, Italy - For many college students, a year abroad is an experience of a lifetime: an opportunity to learn a new language and live in a new culture. But it's often just as much about partying in a place where alcohol and drugs are readily available. Now, the murder of a 21-year-old Briton studying in this picturesque Italian city is throwing a light on the wild life of college kids abroad.Meredith Kercher was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death Nov. 1 in the apartment she shared with her American roommate, Amanda Marie Knox, who is in custody along with two other people in connection with the death. The gruesome tale of sex, drugs and murder has gripped Italy, and even the Vatican has weighed in on what it called the "dangers" of students living far from home and family...The London Times reports:Meredith Kercher ‘killed after refusing orgy’The flatmate of Meredith Kercher, the British student who was murd

MEDIEVAL MARKET AT CASTILLO SOHAIL, FUENGIROLA
The remains of the stone hewn fortress perched at the top of a summit set the scene for a fascinating insight into a different era, namely, the middle ages, at this years IV Mercado Medieval. The event proved to be an immensely popular attraction for tourists and inhabitants in the Fuengirola area, drawing hundreds, if not thousands of people through its doors over the 4 day period from 9th August to the 12th. As you approach the castle and begin the steep ascent to the top, the heavy panting and excited chatter of those around you recedes as the haunting sound of medieval music with its melodic chords permeates the air. Huge efforts had been made by the organisers to ensure an authentic theme prevailed throughout the fortress and on the whole, they were pretty successful in their endeavours. There were numerous market stalls set up along the narrow path with the vendors dressed in clothes appropriate to the time, all hawking their various wares, but sadly, not at medieval prices. G

      Gay Marriage in Medieval France
Here’s a story which Mitt Romney might really find of value for his anti-France campaign. He’s already attacked France with untrue claims about marriage practices there which probably came either from a 1993 comedy or a science fiction story about Mormon practices in space. Now we have a report which argues that there was legalized same-sex marriage in medieval France: “Western family structures have been much more varied than many people today seem to realize,” Tulchin writes in the September issue of the Journal of Modern History. “And Western legal systems have in the past made provisions for a variety of household structures.” For example, he found legal contracts from late medieval France that referred to the term “affrèrement,” roughly translated as brotherment. Similar contracts existed elsewhere in Mediterranean Europe, Tulchin said. In the contract, the “brothers” pledged to live together sharing “un pain, un vin, et u

      Medieval Fair – Castro Marim
We took a step back in time Sunday night after entering the old city of Castro Marim. The small and maze like streets leading to the old Castle spotted with juggling jesters along the walkways, immediately transported us to a different time and place. As we made our way toward the castle entrance, barbarians, musicians and maidens lined the streets to entertain, while merchants stood by selling their wares from dried fruits and candies to medicinal herbs for anything that may ale you. Wallpaper Wednesday : King Richard I The Lionheart & Saladin (Medieval Total War 2)
Below are two wallpapers from the Total War Fansite Kit (FSK) depicting two of the most well-known personalities during the time of the Crusades - King Richard I of England (The Lionheart) and his Muslim adversary Salah al Din (Saladin).© Creative AssemblyThe portrayal of Saladin in his mail coif is historically accurate and almost similiar to the illustration by the late Angus McBride on the cover of Osprey's Men at Arms 171 - Saladin And The Saracens.© Osprey PublishingKing Richard I, on the other hand, is illustrated wearing plate greaves and gauntlets instead of the common mail armour of that time. I'm not sure if plate armour actually existed or was commonplace during that time though.© Creative AssemblyIt's funny why Creative Assembly chose to include these two wallpapers in the FSK instead of offering it for direct download on their official site though.Nothing interesting other than the wallpapers in the FSK (which incidentally only contains Medieval Total War

      The Medieval City
Author: Norman PoundsPaperback: 264 pagesPublisher: Greenwood Press (April 2005)Language: EnglishISBN: 0313324980(R)After a long decline in urban life following the fall of the Roman Empire, towns became centers of trade and of liberty during the medieval period. Here, the author describes how, as Europe stabilized after centuries of strife, commerce and the commercial class grew, and urban areas became an important source of revenue into royal coffers. Towns enjoyed various levels of autonomy, and always provided goods and services unavailable in rural areas. Hazards abounded in towns, though. Disease, fire, crime and other hazards raised mortality rates in urban environs. Designed as an introduction to life of towns and cities in the medieval period, eminent historian Norman Pounds brings to life the many pleasures, rewards, and dangers city-dwellers sought and avoided. Beginning with a look at the Roman Empire's urban legacy, Pounds delves into Urban Planning

      Real Medieval Castles in Movies
Movies are a creative world of imagination and wonder. And does anything evoke this feeling of wonder more than castles? They represent power, wealth, mystery and many other things so they make a perfect setting for movies not just about knights but movies about many other things. Castles and Movies – A history intertwinedMedieval castles have been used in movies since the earliest movies were made. The silent horror movie Nosferatu that was made in 1922 was filmed in Oratu castle. This beautiful and very ominous castle was built on the Orava River in Slovakia around the fourteenth century. The use of medieval castles continues to this day with many scenes from contemporary movies including the Harry Potter movies being filmed in castles. Scottish Castles in the MoviesScottish castles are a very popular setting for movies that take place in the middle ages or require a really old and medieval feeling. One of the most popular castles for this is castle Eilian Donan which has been used

Humanism and Education in Medieval and Renaissance Italy: Tradition and Innovation in Latin Schools from the Twelfth to the Fifteenth Century
Author: Robert BlackPaperback: 506 pagesPublisher: Cambridge University Press (September 2001)Language: EnglishISBN: 0521401925(R)The claim, central to many interpretations of the Renaissance, that humanists introduced a revolution in the classroom is refuted in Robert Black's masterly survey, based on over 500 manuscript school books. He shows that the study of classical texts in schools reached a high point in the twelfth century, followed by a collapse in the thirteenth as universities rose in influence. It was not until the later 1400s that humanism had a significant impact in the schoolroom, as Italian teaching, particularly at elementary levels, remained strongly traditional throughout the fifteenth century. Many Russians buying medieval castles in France
Owning a medieval castle in Europe is too expensive for most Europeans, but it seems like a good investment for growing numbers of Russians. More and more are settling in France, where they have the choice of some 12 thousand antique estates. Several dozen Russians have purchased French castles in the past two years. Yet many of them choose not to save on taxes, keeping their luxurious homes for themselves alone, rather than opening them to the public.

      Medieval Festival
Medieval Festival time again for Hennebont, a fantastic market filled with all sorts of interesting crafts and displays. The streets are also filled with strange and wonderful things. These "Demons" were walking around on stilts that looked like proper jointed devils legs...Something wicked this way comes...they marched right up to the church like an invasion of devils, or gargoyles flown down from the tower.. wading through the crowds and then they just waited by the stone buttresses of the church, wicked devils but such brilliant costumes, I have a desire to learn stilt walking before I am too old. There were beauties too, like this unicorn boy who was part of a troop of woodland/sea people playing strange music and mesmerising the crowds, I think they were a tadge dark too, everything magik has an edge of darkness to it.
