According to a new study, broccoli appears to lower the risk of lung cancer in smokers and ex-smokers.
A research team studied lung-cancer patients and people without the disease who had similar diets and smoking habits. Among smokers, the protective effect of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli ranged from a 20 percent reduction in risk to a 55 percent reduction, depending on the type of veg

Lung tumor is the product of malignant cells forming in the tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining the air passages. The cells in our bodies are constantly dividing and reproducing. Usually, there's an organized pattern to this reproduction as cells use and specialize to convene particular needs. Occasionally, however, a faction becomes smashed. There's a mutation in its DNA, and instead

Damage to cells lining the mouth can predict similar damage in the lungs that eventually leads to lung cancer in smokers, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday. They hope it may be possible to some day swab the mouths of smokers to predict who is developing lung cancer -- saving painful and dangerous biopsies of the lung. The process may also lead to tests that will predict other cancers, said Dr. Li Mao, an expert in head, neck and lung cancer at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston."Our study opens the door to enhancing our ability to predict who has higher probability of getting tobacco-related cancers," Mao said in a statement. "Not only lung cancer, but pancreatic, bladder and head and neck cancers, which also are associated with tobacco use." Full ArticleThink
As we know smoking is the most causes of Lung Cancer.but why only some smokers gets the Lung cancer. Two new studies link a variation in a gene residing on chromosome 15 (of a person's 23 pairs of chromosomes) to a heightened risk of developing lung cancer; a third study suggests that the same mutation affects a person's tendency to become addicted to smokes and, by extension, develop the dreaded disease. Lung cancer is diagnosed in some 200,000 Americans and kills more than 150,000 each year. The new research—published in both Nature and Nature Genetics—suggests that people with this genetic flaw have a 30 percent greater chance of developing the often-fatal illness. But the studies differ on the potential added risk of addiction. The findings offer insight into how this particular gene
When you breathe in, air passes from your nose or mouth through the windpipe (trachea), which divides into two tubes (airways), one going to each lung. These are known as the right and left bronchus and they divide to form smaller tubes called bronchioles, which carry air through the lungs. At the end of the bronchioles are millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. In the alveoli, oxygen is absorbed from air breathed in and passes into the bloodstream to be circulated around the body.Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. The lungs are a pair of cone-shaped organs situated inside the chest, they bring oxygen into the body and take out waste carbon dioxide. There is a strong link between smoking and lung cancer. There are two main categories of lung cancer; Small Cell Lung C
In 2006, cancer researchers were jolted by a controversial new study claiming that 80 percent of lung cancer deaths could be prevented through widespread use of CT scans.
Small print in the study noted that it had been financed in part by a little-known charity called “The Foundation for Lung Cancer: Early Detection, Prevention & Treatment.” But a recent review of tax records showed that the foundation was underwritten almost entirely by $3.6 million in grants from the makers of the Liggett Select, Eve, Grand Prix, Quest and Pyramid cigarette brands.
Prominent cancer researchers and journal editors were stunned to learn of the association. Critics are now questioning the validity of the study, including its survival projections and its assumption that all lung cancer patients who
In the UK 38,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. There are two types of lung cancer; small cell which occurs in 20% of cases and non-small cell which occurs in 80% of cases. Small cell lung cancer is the most dangerous as it travels through to other parts of the body early on and can get into the bloodstream or lymph system quite quickly. Non small cell lung cancer travels more slowly and if caught early can be successfully cured.Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer although 10% of people with the disease have never smoked. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and the age of the smoker. If a person stops smoking the risks reduce quickly and after 15 years the chances of developing lung cancer are the same as a non-smoker. Breathing in
Taking high doses of vitamin E supplements can actually increase the risk of lung cancer.
A study of 77,000 people found consuming 400 milligrams of vitamin E per day increased cancer risk by 28 percent. Smokers were at particular risk.
An expert writing in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine said that people should get their vitamins from fruit and vegetables rather than supplements.
Vitamin E is known to be an antioxidant that protects cells from molecules called free radicals. But in high doses, it may also act as a pro-oxidant, causing oxidation and damage to cells.

Extensive research works conducted at Mesothelioma research clinics have uncovered some symptoms of lung cancer closely linked with the disease.

Abnormal cell growth in either one or both of the lungs is the simple answer to the question, “What is lung cancer?” In healthy individuals, the cells within the lungs go about their business duplicating at a normal rate and turning into more and more lung tissues. The lungs continue to function properly and all is well.
But in damaged lungs, this rate of cell duplication becomes uncharacteristically fast yet new lung tissue fails to develop. These damaged (cancerous) cells begin to clump...

Exposure to asbestos can cause a number of lung diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and pleural fibrosis. Asbestosis results in widespread scarring of the lungs and can leave victims of shortness of breath and more likely to develop lung cancer. Pleural fibrosis causes inflammation, hardening and thickening of the lining of the lung tissue, but it has a number of symptoms can be quite simple to diagnose. The other type of lung disease that can develop after exposure to asbestos is asbestos lung cancer. This can affect both the inside lining of the lung or the outside. While it is impossible to determine the exact value of the number of people who develop the disease because of the asbestos, it is thought that there are about as many asbestos lung cancer deaths each year in Britain as
According to the American Cancer Society, today, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. In 2006, an estimated 162,460 deaths resulted from lung cancer, and of those deaths, an estimated 79,560 of those were women. At first glance, the numbers might not seem so alarming., but what is alarming is the fact that "between 1960 and 1990, deaths from lung cancer among women increased by more than 400%" (www.lungcancer.org). Do you need a moment to digest those statistics? I know I did.In addition, to being the leading cause of cancer-related death for women, the National Cancer Institutes reports that the expected 5-year survival rate for all patients in whom lung cancer is diagnosed is 15.5 percent compared to 64.8 percent for colon, 89 percent for breast and 99.9 pe

There is a very strong link between smoking and lung cancer. It is estimated that 87% of cases of lung cancer in the US are due to smoking.Cigarette smoking is the greatest cause of lung cancer, but those who smoke cigars or pipes also have a greater incidence of lung cancer. This is significant because you often hear cigar smokers say that they are OK because they do not inhale. This is simply not true.Passive smoking and lung cancerPassive smoking is also an important cause of lung cancer. This is where people breathe in the smoke from others even though they may be non-smokers themselves. In the US, it is estimated that 3,000 people a year die from lung cancer as a result of breathing in other people's smoke. Working for years in smoky environments such as casinos and bars increase the
Cancer is a disease in which certain body cells don't function right, divide very fast and produce too much tissue that forms a tumor. A leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women is probably lung cancer. This is the number one cause of cancer deaths surpassing breast cancer as the leading cause of deaths in women. Cancers that begin in the lungs are divided into two major types, the non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer depending on how the cells look under a microscope. Cigarette smoking is known to be a cause of lung cancer. The risk of developing the disease increases with the number of cigarettes smoked particularly if the person starts to smoke at a young age. The person's risk of developing lung cancer may be reduced slightly if you smoke filtered and low
The main three symptoms to lung cancer that should not be ignored are shortness of breath, pain when breathing or coughing, and existence of a persistent cough, especially if it is accompanied by expectoration of sputum streaked with blood. Additionally, loss of appetite, fatigue, unusual losses of weight are three symptoms, which are indicative of lung cancer.Because of the non-specific nature of symptoms of Mesothelioma, Mesothelioma tests are imperative to rule out incidence of the disease when lung cancer symptoms show up. Early detection of Mesothelioma cancer substantiated by clear information of patient's exposure to asbestos can help define the course of treatment.Early Detection Of Mesothelioma Cancer In Long Term Health PrognosisThe length of time between asbestos exposure and o

It is thought that vitamin D, which is generated sun exposure, can halt tumor growth.
Lung cancer kills more than one million people every year around the globe. Smoking accounts for up to 85 percent of all cases of lung cancer.
The treatment of lung cancer depend on stage of cancer, type of cancer and the age of the patient. The general condition of the patient also have a great effect on the choice of treatment for him for example if a person is suffering from asthma along with cancer he is not a candidate for surgery. Sometimes the side effects of the treatment are so serious that a physician prefers to treat the patient only symptomatically for example physician pays attention on pain and difficult breathing rather than on cancer itself. There are two types of lung cancer small cell and non small cell. Small cell lung cancer is often treated by chemotherapy alone or with combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgery is not performed in this type of cancer as this type of cancer always spreads beyond the boundaries of the lung. The chemotherapy is used to stop the dividing cancer cells. Chemotherapeutic drugs are always used in combinations. The disadvantage of chemotherapy is their hazardous side eff

Signs of Lung Cancer, the signs and symptoms to check for. It seems as though today more and more people are having pulmonary problems which can be signs of Lung Cancer.Let us take a look at the signs of Lung Cancer and it's symptoms; suppose you are having pulmonary problems and you believe that these are the Signs of Lung Cancer, it is a good idea to go to a physician to have tests done, this is the only way of knowing you have lung cancer.First of all, you may want to know that there are four types of Lung Cancer, these four types of Lung Cancer are: small cell lung cancer, squamous cell carcinoma lung cancer, large cell carcinoma lung cancer and adenocarcinoma lung cancer. All of these four are most likely linked to smoking or second degree smoke, but it is also known that the Signs of Lung Cancer can have an inherited component to this. There is a research being done, that maybe the signs of Lung Cancer can be linked to diet, but that is still in the research arena, but some sign
There is a new way to treat lung cancer with four-dimensional protons. Sounds way out and kind of science fiction like, but there is some validity to the theory and on-going research. The 4D Proton treatment is different than that of the x-rays traditionally used in radiation type therapies. Protons can potentially obliterate lung tumors without damaging as much localized healthy tissue. There is currently lots of discussion of putting this new technology to work and it has been brought up at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine meeting in Seattle. In fact a small study was already done on four patients using protons to treat lung cancer. X-ray cancer therapies use multiple beams, which also go thru non-cancerous tissue harming the lungs and tissue as they exit. The positively charged subatomic protons only move a small distance thru the body. Right now it is a bit hard to control the Protons trajectories, however the science is a viable option in the future with further
Causes » Smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. Being around the smoke from others (secondhand smoke) also raises your risk for lung cancer. However, people who do not smoke and have never smoked have become sick with lung cancer. A review of decades of research has recently shown that smoking marijuana may help cancer cells grow, but there is no direct link between the drug and lung cancer. High levels of air pollution, working with or near cancer-causing chemicals or materials (such as asbestos), and drinking water containing high levels of arsenic can increase your risk for lung cancer. Radiation therapy to the lungs can also increase the risk.In-Depth Causes » Back to TopSymptoms » Early lung cancer may not cause any symptoms. Ian Gibson asked a question I’m sure many have us have wondered about at one time or another:
Which is worse for the development of lung cancer — smoking heavily over a short period of time or smoking fewer cigarettes over many years?
My answer slowly evolved from a comment to a post of its own. Here’s what the research has to say:
In 2003, researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center created a prediction tool that can assess a long-term smoker’s absolute risk of developing lung cancer within 10 years. How long and how much people have smoked, as well as how long it’s been since their last puff, affect the risk of getting lung cancer.
The formula for the study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. I’ve linked to the full article since it&rsqu

Biopharmaceutical researchers have found a protein in blood they say is linked to all stages of lung cancer but which rarely shows up in the blood of people without the disease. Testing for this protein might help physicians decide whether smokers or others at high risk for lung cancer should be referred for lung imaging, say investigators, who presented their findings in Atlanta, Georgia at the American Association for Cancer Research's second International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics in Cancer Therapeutic Development.A diagnostic blood test to screen high-risk individuals for lung cancer could be both practical to use and cost-effective, say investigators from Panacea Pharmaceuticals, Inc., of Gaithersburg, Md."A positive test for this protein marker, followed by CT scanning, may help identify individuals with lung cancer at a stage in which treatment is more effective, possibly even curative," said research scientist Mark Semenuk, who is presenting results of a study testin
Lung cancer is the malignant transformation and expansion of lung tissue, and is the most lethal of all cancers worldwide, responsible for 1.2 million deaths annually. It is a leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the United States. Cigarette smoking causes most lung cancers. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk of lung cancer. High levels of pollution, radiation and asbestos exposure may also increase risk. There are many types of lung cancer. Each type of lung cancer grows and spreads in different ways and is treated differently. Treatment also depends on the stage, or how advanced it is. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Lung cancer that originates in the cells of the lungs is called primary lung cancer; however, cancer may also spread to the lung from other parts of the body. Metastatic cancers spread to the lungs most commonly from the breast, colon, prostate, kidney, thyroid gland, st

The National Cancer Institute recently reported that an estimated 172,570 new cases of lung cancer will be reported this year and that 163,510 American will die from this disease.Lung cancer is caused predominantly by smoking। One expert says that in the case of Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (cancer), it is almost always caused by smoking.Lung cancer is called lung cancer because it begins in the lungs। The right lung has three sections, the left lung has two. Each section is called a lobe. Sometimes the term "bronchogenic cancer" is used to refer to lung cancer as most lung cancers begin in one of the two breathing tubes, the bronchi, in the lungs. There are two major types of lung cancer। One is the Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) mentioned in the previous paragraph. The other is Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer has three subtypes: Adenocarcinoma, Squamous

Lung cancer is the common form of cancer that occurs in the part of lungs and is mostly characterized by the existence of the malignant tumors. Commonly it is the bronchogenic carcinoma all about 90%. The Lung cancer is one of the main lethal of all the cancers worldwide; it leads up to 3 million deaths per annum. Merely one in ten of the lung cancer patients are diagnosed with this virus that would survive the next five years. Even though the lung cancer was before an illness that exaggerated predominately in most of the men, the lung cancer pace for women has increased in the previous few decades that has been accredited to the mounting ratio of the female to most male smokers. Additional women die of the lung cancer than some other cancer that includes the uterine cancers, breast cancer and ovarian cancer.Present researches designate that the aspect with the maximum impact on danger of lung cancer is lasting exposure to the inhaled carcinogens. The main common way of such exposure i
Experimental and epidemiological studies were reviewed to assess whether the consumption of green tea could reduce the risk of lung cancer in smokers. Articles published since 1990 were located by searching electronic databases PubMed, Ovid and Science Direct, using keywords ‘lung cancer’, ‘tea’ and ‘smoking’ without any restriction on language. After relevant articles had been located, further papers were obtained from their reference lists. Evidence from experimental studies (in vitro animal and human trials) suggested that regular intake of green tea may be protective against tobacco carcinogens. However, the mechanism behind the protective effect is only partly understood. In most of the epidemiological studies reviewed, the green tea exposure was within 5 years of the interview or follow-up, which would coincide with the induction period and latent period of lung cancer. Longer term studies are thus needed to further quantify the cancer risk. There is some evidence sug
internet advertisingOne of the lousiest cancers to have is lung cancer, because of the low cure rate. And today the blogosphere is mourning the death of Cathy Seipp, who just died at age 49.Ironically, Ms. Seipp had the type of lung cancer not associated with smoking, but 85% is caused by smoking cigarettes. Most of the lung cancers are found after they spread, because the common types spread early. Then there are the "secondary" lung cancers, which start elsewhere but spread into the bloodstream, and you find them on the chest x ray.But the sad part of the ones that start in the lung is that often they spread early, so by the time you find them on an X ray, it’s too late. An X ray can see something as small as a quarter inch, but a lot of these cancers start in the bronchial tubes, and on an X ray are hidden behind the shadows of the hearts and blood vessels.Technorati tags: Cathy Seipp lung cancer
